Phew price guarantee by Citibank saved the day

This or wait for super announcement and potential price drops?

    • +3

Navi won't do better then this. Nvidia has no incentive to do better.

The only thing maybe better would be an RTX 2060. But at the price this card's at you may as well just spend the extra $120 for a game, 2gb of VRAM and 10% (plus? Probably better now).

      • What do you mean by the 2060 being better? In terms of value?

      • I think thesab is referring to the new super lineup from nvidia, which if the rumours are true, nvidia are going to be selling the super cards at the original RTX RRP and dropping the price on the current line-up.

Navi on the other hand, we only know the 5700 series yet, seems like they will be releasing their other GPUS slowly. Recent rumors show higher end cards from AMD on the way…

      • A lot of rumours about nVidia Super series. The figures from Navi are not looking good for current RTX 2060 and RTX 2070. So nVidia are expected to respond with the Super refresh series.

The expectation is the Super series will have more CUDA cores and RTX 2060 Super will have 8GB to compete with RX 5700. Faster RAM (probably to match Navi's GDDR6 speed). Some leaks are indicating unlocked voltage (which allows card makers to beat up the VRM to feed more power to the chip - improved overclocking).

nVidia have reasons to do better. Making AMD cards look unattractive is good for nVidia.

        • AMD have done that themselves. All Nvidia would have to do would be cut the prices a tad. If they're going to throw out a refresh, pretty unlikely the prices will be knocked down/the performance bumped up in.

          • @N1NJ4W4RR10R: AMD claiming RX 5700 beats the current RTX 2060 (and RX 5700 has 8GB DDR6 RAM), RX 5700 XT beats RTX 2070. Not sure pricing RTX 2060 and RTX 2070 a bit below the upcoming RX 5700 and 5700 XT is enough (essentially meaning AMD have the performance upper hand on mid high range graphics cards).

Even if nVidia just do that and release Super cards to counter the navi cards, it could still be good for consumers. Hopefully, we can see some bargains (like what happened to 1080 Ti towards the end).

    • It's a very good price. The USD equivalent is about $375 before tax. If you have discounted gift cards, this works out very well.

There's a decent chance of a price cut for these cards with Super coming through, but it's also possible those could come in at new price points.

    • it's a tempting price. My gut says that this will probably still be a good deal even after the new cards drop, so it just depends on how much you enjoy having the latest and greatest.

      • +1

I ended up buying it, its 2x the performance of my 970 so its going to be great no matter what. I cant imagine the prices changing too drastically and this is a pretty good price

        • nice! I'm pretty tempted, too, but the timing isn't right for me. I'm sure it will be at least a couple of months before we see a price like this again :)

Just a heads up, these cards can't operate their fans under 40% so, at idle, they rev from 0 rpm to 1500 rpm and back to zero on a loop. Pretty irritating in an otherwise silent system. Custom fan curve is a must.

    • Yer, I’ve got a 2060 gaming OC and unless I’m playing games the triple fans are not running

      • +4

What is there to be confused about? The fans on this card have some unfavourable characteristics which mossfrog has shed some light on.

Not everyone who games uses headphones, and GPU fans are the hardest fans in a system to replace. If you were running an otherwise silent system, this card would definitely stand out in a bad way.

I'm assuming you game on a laptop as you've already stated you don't own a PC yet. Imagine your laptop fan firing up and then turning off again in a loop.

        • IMO more importantly here is the pitch. GPU fans can be absolutely painful to hear even with headphones if they're ramping up constantly.

          • +1

@N1NJ4W4RR10R: Just be thankful it isn't coil whine

            • @cille745: Mine gets some weird ass whine/buzz when my monitor hits 140+ fps. Apparently something to do with the backplate (reports that cards without plate don't whine). Really wish i held out for restock of a Strix 2070

      • +4

If I’m not gaming I’m not wearing headphones. Why would I want the fans whining away while I’m editing a word doc? Or the PC is just sitting idle?

Of course the fans are going to be going nuts during gaming, that’s a given. OC stated when it’s at idle, i.e. not gaming.

    • I have this card and don't have any issues with the fans ramping up/down while idle. Maybe my 3fan AIO CPU liquid cooler + one extracter fan keeps the case cool enough, don't know. Side note, I did come from at 290 windforce which was loud as hell.

      • I've got a Noctua DH-15 keeping my CPU below 30°c at idle. Solid, positive pressure airflow too. Even with the best case cooling your GPU will eventually hit 70°c+ just idling if GPU fans aren't running. It's a common problem with the Gigabyte RTX series and they've released firmware updates to "improve fan performance". Hasn't helped imo though

    • Hey I experience this problem. Usually when doing graphics work or when playing low-medium intensive games.

What settings did you use for your fan curve? Did you use afterburner to set the curve? (I have afterburner but have never tweaked any of those settings).

      • +1

In afterburner i've set it to not run the fans until around 60°c then gradually ramp up to 100% fan @ 90°c. It's not perfect but it's better than stock. Other option would be to set the minimum @ 40%. That way there's no ramping vroooooom sound. Just make sure you monitor temps after changes so you don't cook your card

    • +1

      What's a slient idle 2070 card?

    • Can you download software that creates a custom fan curve for this card?

  • +2

I read reviews on newegg about this card says it will not last long…
Buy this OR the ASUS ROG Strix GeForce RTX 2060?

  • I recently bought a Gigabyte RTX 2060 from PC Case Gear. Still unopened. Does anyone know if they charge a 15% restocking fee, if I returned it? Or will I get a full refund. Same one on CA is cheaper with the 20% off. Unfortunately, their phone lines are closed during weekend. So won't know until Monday by which time the CA offer would have expired.

    • -1

      Could've Google'd it

Looks like yes, they do. Not worth returning and trying to get this, just stick with your purchase now. The 15% makes it not worth it.

      • +4

Thanks for your response. Not sure, what you wanted me to Google. Their site mentions 15% restocking fee for opened items. Mine is unopened, which is why I wanted to hear from other's experience. Again, appreciate your time for responding.

    • +1

I've returned an opened monitor to CA without any restocking fee. However, I think its because ebay plus guarantees free returns so I think thats why I wasn't charged

      • Hey, my query was related to PC Case Gear return policy and not CA :)

        • oops i cant read. probably buy the 2070 from CA and ring up PCCG on monday. That way you can still return to CA if PCCG charges a restocking fee

  • noice deal!!

  • Insane deal if you want to get into ML/Tensor Flow.

  • Is this card overclockable ?

    • Yes. I haven't overclocked it myself but have looked into doing so. Apparently it overclocks well because the 3 fans provide good cooling. I need another exhaust fan and intake fan on my case though otherwise it'll just dump a tonne of heat inside.

  • Imagine buying this 2 weeks before 2070 super arrives.

    • +2

More like. Imagine buying this when you could have got the same from a GTX 1080 2 years ago. (ok ill admit i paid $15 extra, but it did have a free game).

      • +2

Yea I didn't wanna rub it in that much. But apparently this card will get a price drop in a few weeks when the Super launches. I was lucky to pick up a 1080 Ti Strix just prior to the coin mining boom.

        • Yeah these could finally turn into the price/performance increase a generation is supposed to have if the release of super drops these down some $50-100.

Yeah good point, i did get in before the mining boom too. So i guess there was a year plus there where you couldnt get the GTX 1080 well priced, and then when you could the 2000 series was coming out. I guess i can "forgive" people buying this non improvement card when i consider that.

  • The MSI RTX2070 8GB Armor OC card from the same seller looks like a better option for the price IMO. At $636.65 with the coupon code it's a bit more than this card but still a great price for a manufacturer known for making good quality cards these days. A friend and I have both had other gigabyte cards that were plagued with artifacts and other problems and the warranty replacements ended up having the same problems. Also as someone else mentioned here there have been several similar reviews on Newegg from people with this card.

    • I heard armour was meh to bad for the gtx 10 generation, looks the exact same on these ones. So i would say save the $40.
As for artifacts issue. Things like that are usually more a problem with a specific line or batch of cards, not the company they're from. Because every while you hear issues from each company (and usually about a specific set of their cards).

      • Where have you heard that? All the reviews I've found about the RTX2070 armor card have been good.

        • Sorry i didn't write that super clear.
The talk was the armor design was pretty mediocre in 10 series, and the design looks the exact same this time. Meaning possibly its also a mediocre design.
But i suppose under the hood it could be different, so there may be no issue whatsoever.

All this said i have a gtx 1080 msi armor and while its far from the best cooling i have had in a GPU, unless you are overclocking it doesn't seem to make too much difference (though its fans spin up pretty ASAP so if you like your PC nice and quiet i would avoid). But yeah just overall mediocre.
