43” Hisense UHD TV or Xbox One X 1TB or iPad 6th Gen 128GB Wi-Fi on Telstra $65 Plan (12 Months, 60GB, U/L Calls/SMS) @ JB Hi-Fi

2500

Another ridiculous deal from JB HiFi, available for new and port in activations. Your choice of either:

  • Hisense 43” UHD LED TV ($745);
  • Xbox One X 1TB Console ($499); or
  • iPad 128GB WiFi 6th Gen ($539)

On the JB HiFi Telstra $65 plan for 12 months (includes 60GB data, unlimited calls and SMS, etc.).

Several punters have been successful in switching over to the Telstra $69 BYO Plan with $20 of monthly discounts (making the plan only $49 per month). Nice work OzFam. :)

  • This may be a stupid question?
Can this be used instead of NBN? we are paying $90pm for Telstra unlimited. We never would use 60gb a month so the $30pm would be a good saving. Would need to outlay for a 3g/4g modem of course but with the bonus's available seems quite attractive.

    Cheers Rob

As long as the data is sufficient for your needs and reception is fine of course. Note it is $10 a GB if you go over your allowance on the JB Plan.

    • +1

I don't know if it can be put in a dedicated modem/router but there's nothing stopping you from putting it in a compatible mobile somewhere central in your house using it as a hotspot and plugging it into mains power. If you're really not the kind of people to use much Internet for anything this is probably a decent solution I would warn you though 60 GB a month for home use is tiny. Could use the thing as a home phone as well to be honest you just place it somewhere and keep it plugged in.

      • It's tempting, will have to see what our past bills have been. I have 60gm on my phone and the wife is on the old $49 plan (that needs upgrading as the new plan has more GB) She is on a sim only plan but needs her phone number for work/parents. Worried if she ports out and tries to port back in like others have done in a matter of hours.

        • +1

That's not something I'm gonna try as I've been told you cannot port back to Telstra in 30 days I don't want some automated system catching me and putting me in a position where I'm pretty much screwed. Wish we could do a poll to see who's actually gone from another provider back to Telstra within that time frame. If they don't have an automated system I would give it ago but someone's gonna need to confirm that

          • @Sammy Boi: I was on Optus for 10 days and I've heard of multiple other occasions of porting out and in within hours. I would think it's some BS they're trying to tell you.

            • @wellzi: I Believe that is the legit protocol but if they don't have anything automated to stop you it should be possible. We need a Telstra employee to have our back and clarify things like that. Or somebody willing to get the burna Sims and try

    • +1

I've been told by telstra staff and have read it directly on their website as well that you're not allowed to put a mobile phone sim into a modem to use the data that way. Yes it will work - I have a spare NBN modem, inserted a sim and I changed some settings to make it work. The speeds I got were 10x faster through the modem than on my phone too. I did it just on a cheap burner sim to test it then went into the store to get an unlimited plan and check it was allowed etc. They said it's only allowed if I use a mobile broadband sim which are way more expensive and not a regular phone sim. Apparently staff said that telstra can figure out that the phone sim is being used in a modem and that you'll get in trouble etc. Though the telstra staff also said that it's not possible to put a sim in an nbn modem and get it to work despite me doing exactly that. So telstra might be bluffing with saying they can track it in a modem. But I'd proceed with caution.

If you are hot spotting off your phone and not through a modem that's 100% allowed though.

      edit
If you want to risk it anyway you can message me and I'll tell you what settings to change in your current NBN modem assuming it's a telstra NBN modem.

      • Interesting, can you just add a dongle to the current Telstra modem and chabge settings? I looked at my usage and was surprised to see we have used nearly 50gb already and still have 22 days left in the cycle…
But a series we watched has just finished so there goes 4gb a week in downloads haha

      • The Aeon, how do I pm you? i am keen to know the steps. I have a 1st Gen Telstra Smart NBN modem.

        • I think you can click on my profile and PM me. I can't check it right now to give you exact steps but if you PM me it'll help me remember to check it out for you when I'm near my modem to check it. From memory you go to here: http://telstra.gateway/ then that takes you to your modem settings. Then you go to advanced settings or DNS settings, something along those lines. There's a drop down that has telstra.hybrid or telstra.internet (can't remember which one it is but I'm 99% sure it's telstra.hybrid) anyway you change that to the opposite of what it says and then it'll work off a telstra sim that you've inserted with uncapped 4g speeds.

I know those instructions don't sound very technical which probably isn't reassuring haha. But I followed a guide for it - i'm not the mastermind behind it. I can't find the guide but when I log into my modem settings I'll know straight away where to look since it wasn't that hard, it was like 3 clicks. But I have confirmed with telstra on the online chat just now that if you do it with a mobile phone sim, they can track it and they will cut you off. You're only allowed to do it with a broadband data sim.

  • This expires on the 19th? Short promo….

    • Its too good an offer to keep it running too long.

      • Especially if people grab the TV. I think that's gonna stay at a higher price than the other devices considering I picked up a one X for 381 black Friday sale from Amazon including cashback. Although I didn't need an iPad but I did need a TV so it all works out

If this is of any interest to anyone.

    Been on livechat.

The deal at Telstra is, of you sign up on any byo plan, you can asked to be downgraded at no charge as long as you are still keeping your service with Telstra.

So, get on this $69 and then call to downgrade to $49. Forget about asking $10 credit for port in and online discount. The above is cleaner and you get the same end result.

    • End result is not the same though, as the $49 has less data.
If you can get the $10+$10 discount you get the $69 for $49.

But thanks, I might use that one if I don't have any luck with discounts.

      • OP implies both the 69 and 49 plan have the same amount of data?

        • My mistake. I meant both the Telstra $49 and the JB $65 got the same data.

I had trouble getting Telstra to give me the $20 credit for online and new port after moving to the $69, so I just asked to be downgraded and it worked a treat.

          • @PuppieWayne: OP is awesome for posting this but he should probably change it to reflect the $69 plan with $20 discount not 49 as that's not what we're doing. When all is said and done we got a $20 discount by going up five dollars got peace of mind data and international calling back. It's a good day to be a Telstra and jb customer and I've been loyal to both these companies forever

            • +1

@Sammy Boi: Appreciate the feedback - I've updated the deal to show it's a $69 plan which is then eligible for $20 in discounts.

              • +1

@wellzi: Good work buddy nice spotting my post by the way :)

    • Good to know, but the $49 is technically NOT a downgrade. It's advertised as a $69 plan with $20 in monthly credits.

      • +1

        You're correct we are upgrading

I can confirm I got a $500 gift card in store yesterday for BYOD sim only plan $65 per month.
I can confirm this evening that I live chatted and had a lovely lady drop my new plan from $65 to $49 per month with no fees at all.
    GG Telstra. :)

  • From the last time I did the "port out/port back in on the same day" approach, it seems it can come down to the store and/or salesperson. Anyone been able to port out and back in on the same day in Brisbane CBD?

  • -1

Can someone explain how this is a good deal?

Tell me if my maths is wrong.

Say you buy a iPhone XR for $1499 and JB give you $500 phone credit. That phone becomes $999 or $41.60 per mth ($999/24mths)
Then you add the $65 per month plan which equals $65+$41.60 = $106.25 per month????

How is this a good deal?

    • +1

Get ready for some negs!! Lol

Fyi: it is a 12 month byo plan. You do not need to buy anything. You can go home with the $500 gift card.

    • It's a good deal if you are to get the TV as the plan over 12 months is $780 and the TV retails for $750 so you would technically be paying only $30 for the plan over 12 months.

    • +1

This deal doesn't discuss getting a phone at all, least of all an iPhone XR.

    • I don't think the deal is cater to you getting the best and latest hardware..

    • +2

I already have a good phone. I pay $40/ month right now on a BYO plan that i'm out of contract on. With this deal I can pay just $9/ month more ($108 over 12 months) and get a free ipad (or arguably $108). The deal may not be great for everyone but those in situations like me, it's a great deal. I know others are more focused on the tv but I already own two TVs both significantly better than the one on offer.

Also this guy doesn't deserve to be negged just for asking how it is a good deal.

  • Anyone that has signed up with this deal did you pay the first lot of $65 in store at jb hifi or is it due in a months time? Just curious as I’ve never been on a phone plan before.

    • +1

Nope - Telstra bill you accordingly. If you have an existing account you should pay a pro-rata until the end of your billing cycle as well as the following months' service charge. If new, it should be 2 months I believe. :)

Basically you walk out the door not having paid a cent.

  • Has anyone had any luck with a BYO plan - I'm on a casual plan, no contract, with Telstra - and re-contracting? I'd love to take advantage of this deal but I'm not keen to port out/in, ya dig?

    • +2

Unless you create a new service (ie. new number) then no, unfortunately.

      • Thx for your help across all these different comment nodes, Shekster

  • I was out of Telstra BYO contract last Friday. I signed up to Vodafone prepaid yesterday and ported my existing number across to Vodafone this morning. Should I wait couple of days prior to signing this instore at jb hifi or same day is fine. What sort of checks on existing number they perform while signing up to this plan.

    • In my experience - none. Just walk into JB and say "I want to port into Telstra. I am on Vodafone now" and that's it. Avoids the question altogether. :)

      • I haven't been that lucky. Tried to do it at 2 JB's on the day I ported from and they wouldn't allow it.

Now 2 weeks later I tried another store and they said only after a month.

The thing is the people I have tried have looked into the history of my telstra account and seen that I only just ported out.

    • You only have tomorrow and the next day I believe to take benefit of this

  • +1

Just got home from JB got my new television and Sim.

The awesome bloke at JB had absolutely no problem adding the service to my existing account.

Now to hit up Telstra and try to get those discounts.

Any suggestions on what I should say I'm gonna go through the comments but if anybody has recently done it today let me know

    • +2

I just went with something along the lines of "hi, I just signed up to a Telstra BYO JB HiFi Plan and was not currently aware of the Telstra deals. I would like to switch over to the online $69 plan with $10 new service discount and $10 online discount please" when I did the Huawei P30 deal. Because the base plan of the Telstra plan is $69 they viewed it as an upgrade. Of course, YRMV.

      • I'm trying this later first attempt failed at the full $20

      • Thanks for the directions it worked so stoked mate.

    • Please let me know how you go as I intend to go to jb hi fi after work today!

      • +1

Check my comments below buddy I'll keep trying

  • +1

After wasting an hour of my life I was not able to receive $20 discount they would allow me to move to the $69 plan and give me a $10 discount but that's it. Basically the other $10 is for activation and because it was activated at JB therefore I'm not eligible. Activation is them activating the Sim card not a different plan. After requesting the supervisor was asked I got the same response and just shut the chat. I know that with the methods we use we are not necessarily eligible but I think it's pretty poor that they won't honour a deal that is based around activation three hours after activation. I'll be trying again shortly. Worst case scenario I get 65 down to 59 but you do get a couple of inclusions like peace of mind data.

It's definitely based on who you get I think it's just keep trying until it works or you run out of patience

    • Sorry to hear it didn't completely work out for you! :) … I had doubts about the new activation discount, but not necessarily the $10 online discount (as you technically switched online). Did you port in from another carrier? Maybe try asking for the $10 port in credit to a couple of consultants? lol

      • I didn't port in but I'm going to try again now. $10 one seems no problem because it's for existing customers and we are switching I think that's a guarantee so people need to go for the port in or activation

  • +1

And they asked me something about did I get any promotions from JB this made me a bit sceptical and I was just like yeah a gift card they didn't seem to know too much as they asked the question did I receive anything like a free case. I was like no a gift card. I didn't mention any more I knew they are getting suss. Yeah I got a free case #4KTV :)

  • I went into store to sign up. The staff was able to look at the history of my account. I completed port in only this morning. They advised that cannot honour offer as need to wait at least 30 days.

    • Unlucky!

      • Got it in third time:-)
I sent an email to store that it is not listed online regarding 30 days port in wait. They let me sign up next day.

    • Did you port out of Telstra and you're trying to port back in? because there is 30 day wait At least that's what is stated I know some people managed to get past it

  • +6

Ladies and gentlemen we did it :)

I would like to thank OP and everybody trying to assist the community in this great bargain.

I successfully upgraded to the $69 plan and received the $20 discount $10 was activation the other 10 was referred to as credit so I believe online promotional.

First live chat was no luck and a bit sketchy and it was a guy.

Second was a lady so I thought let's try a different approach. I believe I'm someone with good manners but I definitely brought them to the table.
I could be wrong but I pretty much believe when it comes to Telstra it's who you deal with and also how you treat them. She was a bit hesitant at first until I explained I was allowed to switch plans with no termination fee as Telstra has always done. I believe she thought I was on an actual mobile plan so the handset of course would have come into play she quickly looked realised everything was as I explained and proceeded to manually change the account. From other people's comments I've learnt a few things it seems like a lot of people get knocked back because they can't process the request I don't like to make assumptions but I believe they are knocking you back because their automation isn't doing what we want it to do. They can still do it manually and I've actually had this done in the past as well. There may be restrictions but from my experience they can edit whatever they want really. It took her some time but she stayed in constant contact. I got my order number I got my chat ID that is to do with her ID I believe and of course sent a copy to my email. I do apologise for this long story but I invested quite a bit of time into this bargain and just thought I would do the best to explain a few things.

    • Thanks for sharing, Sammy

      • No problems buddy if you run into any problems Chuck me a DM.

It could take a couple of tries but I would say it's definitely worth it

        • Unfortunately I am ineligible - I'm already on Telstra, on a month to month plan (no contract). They aren't eligible! I'm not sure if I want to risk the port out/in, seeing as some OzBargainers have reported mixed results!

          • +1

@ThithLord: I'm already on Telstra I literally went into JB today and started the process gave him my ID. my Telstra account came up :O I was like yeah that's under my name but I'm paying for it for a friend I felt silly afterwards because I'm pretty sure I spoke to this guy on Sunday and when I explained things he had no problem signing me up to a new contract even though I was a current Telstra customer. If you have no contract cancel it tomorrow morning if you are having problems at your JB store. I was prepared to run up to Telstra to cancel my current contract at that time but the guy didn't have a problem because they are still getting their cut because it's a new contract. I didn't think it was a little cheeky that he managed to add it to my current account as well.

            • @Sammy Boi: Well! Thanks! I'll give it a try!

            • @Sammy Boi: Hold up - did you manage to have a Telstra number and then get them to recontract to the $65 plan? I just tried now and they wouldn't do it :( at Garden City Westfield, QLD

              • @ThithLord: No I got a new number I plan on cancelling the other

                • @Sammy Boi: Get a second number cancel the one with no contract and get them to transfer the number over the new one that's what I'm gonna do tomorrow I confirmed on Sunday it's possible. I was told 3 to 5 days.

    • When signing up in store did you pay the first month up front at JB? Thanks Sammy!

      • +1

        No payment at all.
They don't even set it up with any payment options. I had a quick basic credit check, signed on their electronic tablet and then that was it.
They gave me the sim card to put in my phone later, as woolworths mobile has an added security layer for porting, giving you an hour to stop the port if someone else has activated it.

I have to wait a few days for my TV to arrive, they'd given that many away.

        • The way I was treated and when I grab my TV from the boys at the back of the store I get the impression even the employees are taking this up

      • Yeah no payment just walked out with a TV/sim card/contract. Took like 15 minutes all up and I was having a bit of a cheeky chat with the bloke about the situation. He specifically said I'm allowed to upgrade at any time and it's funny because you are so if Telstra tried to tell anybody it's locked in that's not true

        • Upgrade to what sorry

          • @Slut: Basically when this all started I heard a few people saying they got knocked back. Basically Telstra chat trying to tell people they couldn't switch plans but the JB plan isn't lock in. This is referring to switching plans for the discounts

  • +2

Just want to update: I've successfully ported out of Optus, into Telstra and got my new TV.

Also got the $20 discount, so paying $49 per month for 60gb a month.

    • Good effort! What did you say to them exactly?

      • +2

I just talked as if I wasn't asking for the deal, that it was something to be expected.

"I think I started the port over process already at JB Hi-Fi, I would like to upgrade to the $69/ per month plan though and to receive the $10 online credit + $10 new service credit."

The live chat rep keeps insisting that the offer of a $20 discount is unique to me though and they're only offering it as I ported over from Optus.

        • Thanks for the quick reply :) Appreciate the help.

    • Welcome Into the gang buddy I did the exact same deal down to the TV mines gonna stay in the box for about a week while I get something nice to put it on. Let me know your thoughts on the television I don't see any reviews specifications look nice

  • I got my $500 Gift Card and $65/mth 60GB with unlimited call and text from JB Hifi at lunch today (I was on kogan mobile previously). I then contacted Telstra via chat. Apparently, I could switch over to the $49 or $59 plans, however, they stated I would need to return the $500 Gift Card. I decided to hold off. I'll try with a different person later.

    • Probably shouldn't even tell them about your gift card in the first place.

      • @okbianca, I didn’t. They mentioned it.

    • I ended up upgrading online to the $69 plan @$59 price. No issues doing that on the online system. No human interaction.

      • How did you upgrade online?

  • +2

I've upgraded to the $49 plan via an agent. Had to be extremely polite and patient.

    • +2

Good work buddy that was my approach extremely polite and if they start to help you start dropping a few compliments
I had a lovely lady and she seemed to love a compliment or two.

  • Sorry, maybe a dumb question, but if i have an Adli prepaid sim, can i "port" my current number in or will i only get this with a new number?

  • New telstra customer only.

Does it mean never have telstra account?

    Is that strictly enforced?

    • It is available for new services and port ins.

it is not dependent on the Telstra account (as you may already have a telstra home broadband plan), but rather on the service itself.

      • How about prepaid mobile phone service? I used to have a couple.

        • It might be better if you just tell me your situation. Are you moving your current mobile service to this JB plan? What carrier are you currently with?

          • @wellzi: I m with amaysim, want to take up this offer (port the number) . But I used to have a number (already disconnected) with telstra (prepaid account), so I m not a new customer?

            • +1

@moonwalk: As you're moving the service from Amaysim to Telstra, you should qualify as a port-in customer. :)

The offer is per the service and not the account. Go forth and conquer, my friend!

        • I used to be in Telstra for a year, and port out to lebara. after I login back, the is non -issue with that. They said you only need the sim that was not from telstra, that what they required . And you need to link your telstra account to the post-paid account afterthat.
