Not really big difference: 3rd gen can play 1080p at 60 fps, has 15% faster performance, and you can assign speaker group.
I think it also supports AC wifi too.
The Kayo app doesn't work on 2nd gen if that matters to you
Or at least it told me it wouldn't work with anything besides the Ultra or 3rd Gen
@Birdseye: Kayo works fine on my Chromecast 1st Gen
It does, but limited to HD only.
Been waiting for 6 mths to assign my Gen 1 to speaker group and Google just confirmed it needs to be Gen 2 or above.
is this better than the 1st gen in regards to wifi?
I got both (1st & 2nd gen), one of each, and I'm about to replace the 1st gen one with a 3rd gen.
My 1st gen keeps buffering with Kayo and drops a lot in quality when watching Netflix, I thought it was because of the position of my tv and the distance from my router so swapped to the 2nd gen and works flawlessly.
I also somebody told me you can't take your 1st gen anywhere now as there is no way of changing the wifi it connects to, havent tested it so not sure if its true.
Hi do you mind if I ask, whether you cast kayo using an iOS device? Just wanna confirm kayo works with Iphone + Chromecast.
Yes it does, I use either my iphone or ipad to cast Kayo
@chrismor: Thank you!
1st Gen can be reset and change wifi network & pwd etc. just tried recently.
First gen uses 2.4Ghz while this one has 5Ghz support
thanks pulled the trigger on this one
Kayo keeps telling me my Chromecast (2nd gen) is too old and then limits the quality to 720p. Can anyone confirm this 3rd gen will solve that or do I need the Chromecast Ultra?
i thought the same as well…but kayo strictly says it will only work with chromecast ultra
That's not right. As per their devices help page:
Chromecast: For the optimal streaming experience, Kayo recommends Chromecast Ultra and latest 3rd Generation, and similar capability Android TVs.
I have Kayo and use a computer attached to my TV to stream it. I only get 720p, I thought Kayo only went to 720?
I've noticed that if you choose "HD (>720p)" in Viewing Options/Quality Options on PC it sticks at 720p, but if you choose "Automatic" it will bump to 1080p properly.
Or you can also switch to Automatic then back to HD and it will bump up to 1080p (to avoid quality fluctuations if your net is slow)
But yeah you're right, for some reason when its on HD on default, its stuck on 720p.
Hey mate I have the 3rd gen Chromecast and it works fine with Kayo, I get 1080p
I just got a 3rd gen Chromecast and it the quality issues have improved for me, compared to the 2nd Gen.
Great! can start using my 10% off gift cards lol
Kinda wish I'd got this over the VTV. The built in Chromecast on the VTV is horrible
is it not just an inbuilt genuine ChromeCast?
Can't comment on the VTV, but CC on the MiBox has been flawless.
The Chromecast in the Mibox that I own is not flawless, I have several apps that simply do not work with the mibox, the most annoying one being Optus sport. However Foxtel Now also didn't work with the mibox.
Thankfully Kayo does.
I haven't had a problem with the Chromecast on my VTV, so clearly mileage may vary.
It's built-in casting which is apparently not the same as having an actual chromecast
I can't cast Optus Sport from my phone without it buffering every couple seconds, and I can't cast chrome tabs from my mac without a weird colour shift. Other's like youtube/stan etc work fine but there's already apps for those unlike optus sport.
Netflix seems to work sometimes (the app is way better)
Interestingly though, it's only the on-demand replays that stutter on Optus Sports to VTV - live games casting is fine.
I think it's to do with the codec of the video used for the replays vs the live one.
Chrome Tabs haven't had weird colours for me, but there is a colour setting in the VTV that you might want to play around with, as well as the frame rate.
Alternatively for the VTV, you can use Kodi and the Optus Sport plugin written by a New Zealander - I can't remember if that solves the problem, because I was only using it to watch live.
URL is here https://www.matthuisman.nz/2019/03/optus-sport-kodi-add-on.h… - requires Optus Sports subscription (obvs)
Good luck!
@Droz: The Kodi plugin works great! Thanks
Can I cast the whole mac os desktop screen to the chrome cast as of now?
Bought 2, thanks op
Thanks OP been waiting for a good price on these.
Since i been using shield TV I don't want anything less even if it cost 4 times
Wonder if we can ask Ofiicework for price beat 5%?
Probably not because ebay is paying for the coupon
Getting this as my first gen only supports 2.4Ghz
How do you tell what gen your chromecast is?
First Gen is the square stick with the HDMI attached directly to it, second gen is like the one pictured in the OP but has the chrome symbol on it and is a shiny plastic, third gen is matte plastic with the google "G" on it. :). Not sure about the Ultra 4 K though because I don't have one of those!
It was actually a couple $ less at Bing Lee with their 20% ebay coupon. $44.80
I now feel remorse that I wasn't able to post it. Sorry
If I'm in second gen, much point to upgrade to third gen?
Deal not expired yet? They must have a lot of these and the Yamaha sound bar on stock!
I'm trying to buy 3 of these…. and keep getting the error message.
any ideas?Something went wrong. Please try to check out again.
Error codes: 70049 70084
figured it out.
I think the store I choose didn't have 3 in stock
I managed to buy it from a different store.
Any idea why my eBay not accepting the code and saying "This code can't be applied to your order"???
Any difference to 2nd?
