Compared to the Mango, both these units have:
* better processors
* dual band 750 WiFi (2.4/5Ghz)
* more ethernet ports (3)
* micro-sd slot
* Use 5V/2A ( compared with 5V/1A on the Mango)

The AR750s differs from the AR750:
* CES 2019 Innovation Awards HONOREE in the Cybersecurity and Personal Privacy product category
* better processor (theoretically better performance inc OpenVPN)
* gigabit ports (not that useful in a hotel free WiFi situation but useful if you're running as your main router or if you're using this at a trade show or something moving big wired data around)
* external foldable antenna (you can actually replace the antenna if you disassemble the unit)
* grey (slate) colour compared to white :)

Why use a dual band as a WISP router/repeater? Here's some test figures from my experiences:
Connect directly to the source router (standing right next to) @ 2.4 GHz 46Mb
Connect directly to the source router (at the "extreme" of the house) @ 2.4 Ghz 30Mb
WISP to source router on 2.4Ghz and connect to AR750s LAN on 2.4Ghz 22Mb (yes it's lower but I'm now on my own subnet for security)
WISP to source router on 2.4Ghz and connect to the AR750s LAN on 5Ghz 45Mb (fast and secure)

So WISPing on one band and LAN on another makes a big difference to throughput. Handy if you're using one of these as a WiFi repeater/range extender/VPN passthrough or similar at home.

For a bit of a (non-technical) review of the AR750s and a comparison size wise against the Mango, please see my post here (please note this was a review unit supplied to me by GL.iNet)

p.s. I'd suggest updating to their "testing" 3.022 firmware on both units as it appears to be more stable than their stable (shipped) release

      @whitty Took me a while to work out what you meant… :) Thanks. Fixed.

      • No one needs a travel router when they can have a travel sim and use Wi-Fi/USB/Bluetooth hotspot from their mobile phone but a mini dualband, Ethernet, openWRT packed router? Hell yeah. This should be the standard size for home Modem/Routers. Wish they had fitted a Modem in this small unit too.

        Thanks OP

        Ps, heads up, this is not a modem. So if you need one better buy a combo unit.

        • +2

          @pal next testing unit and maybe ozbargain: GL-MiFi with EP06-E integrated 4G modem :)

          • @Limbot: Don't forget Band 28 :D

            • +1

              @bdl: @bdl I'll be testing Voda, Optus and Telstra as the EP06-e supports all the major bands these telcos use.

              • @Limbot: Can this unit (GL-MiFi) do the same as the travel routers?
                Meaning connect to hotel hotspot or hotel LAN and share the connection?

                • @syngen: @syngen Yes it can with the addition of having a built in LTE modem. I am testing one at the moment. Few "issues" with LTE speeds but WISP repeater works fine :)

  • And after watching out for a bargain for the last couple of months I bought the GL.iNet GL-AR750S-EXT this morning :-( must learn to be slightly more patient…

    • @stevemccracken Sorry mate, I don't actually work for GL.iNet so can't help you :(

    • +1

      Cancel and reorder.

  • At these prices it'll be free shipping without prime 😉

    • Correct, sorry, corrected. :)

  • OP, you seem to be pretty well versed with this topic, how good is mesh with OpenWRT? I have this one, any suggestions on how to implement a mesh network?
    Open to getting completely new hardware as well, as long as I stay on LEDE/OpenWRT.

    • +1

      @Rorschach. Sorry haven't had the time (or need) to play with mesh on these units……Yet :)
      Sure some more knowledgeable ozbargainers can assist here…..

  • Do either of these models support a 4G USB modem?

    • @mathew42 Yes, if they're supported under OpenWRT then they'll support. I use a Optus Alcatel MW41CL and a Telstra LTE MF910Z with mine (not dongles but the good thing is they supply their own power via battery and don't "overload" the USB port)

  • Cheers been thinking about getting one

  • Anyone know if these can bypass hotel login pages?

    • @Agar1987 Not bypass as such, but if you connect the router, connect your first device to the router, login into the hotel WiFi on your first device, then theoretically every additional device attached to the router should bypass the hotel login screen (including Chromecasts, FireTV sticks etc) . This works out of the box normally but if you're having issues other tricks/additional steps are:

      -Initially go to neverssl.com which forces the login screen
      -Turn off DNS rebind function and do above
      -In the worst case you have to connect directly to the hotel WiFi with a device, then once logged in you clone the MAC adddress of your registered device on the router.

      Depends on the hotel's WiFi/authentication infrastructure.

      • Perfect, thank you, and just one last question. Does it come with an Aussie power plug?

        • @Agar1987 Yes 5v/2A USB adapter with AU plug, USB cable and Ethernet cable :)

  • Thanks mate, I bought the mango and was impressed but I had issues with wifi distance(I have no control over the AP location). Hoping this will be a bit better with external antennas and 5g.

    It arrived today(ordered Tuesday).

    I've just got it turned on(nothing connected) and it seems to be running a fair bit warmer than the mango does even under load.

    Mango will be assigned to another project.

  • How would one of these go sitting in front of Google Wifi and set up with a VPN?

  • Finally got around to setting my 750s up. Amazing little unit, now I'm getting strong WiFi in a dead zone at work.

    • +1

      I recommend you update the firmware if you think any GUI features are missing. I was annoyed there was a few options missing compared to the mango but with the latest beta build it's got even more.
      I'm pretty sure it also added auto reconnect.

      It's a good little unit, runs a bit warm though.
