Acer 2.5" 750GB Slim External Hard Disk Drive $66 - Harvey Norman Chadstone

430

Thoguht I'd share my spoils from Harvey Norman - Chadstone…
750GB 2.5" Slim external Hard Disk Drive..

RRP $149 (on box)
Listed for $66… (including 20% off)

Saw it for $99 (excluding 20% at Nudawading)
so the price will be store dependent.

Okay deal. for a portable harddrive…
but the ripper thing is…

If you break open the case its
WD7500BPVT - WD scorpio blue (standard notebook size)

Cheapest is $99
http://www.staticice.com.au/cgi-bin/search.cgi?q=WD7500BPVT&…

Points to make
1) No warranty from WD - (have check the serial number)
2) Good chance of recking the external case to get the cdrive out
3) Its one of the new Advanced format drvies, they may need to be "aligned" for unaware operating systems..

still $66 to upgrade a laptop is a good buy… (although you sacrifice the warranty by doing so)..

Receipt here… as proof… (NB the itunes card bargains.. Thanx to Ozbargain)

PS3 160gb with platinium game and HDMI cable $374.40
PS3 320gb with Play TV $438.4
Xbox 4g with kinect with bonus charger $342.40
Xbox 250g with kinect with bonus charger $439
Xbox 250g no kinect with bonus charger $317

  • Good deal :)

  • Good deal, anyone confirm this price is available around sydney?

  • You say "listed at $99" but on the site is is $149 ->

    http://www.harveynorman.com.au/product/1256974030701/acer-gb…

Did you mean it was variously priced at $99 in one Harvey Norman store (Nudawading) and $82.50 in another store (Harvey Norman - Chadstone)?

Would you please post a copy of the receipt?

    • I would also like a receipt if possible.

    • It is $66 (after the 20%), saw it when I was there Friday, they had a bucketful at that time.

    • my local HN is also listed it for $99 in green price label
they refuse to take further 20% off because those green sticker items are excluded

  • bought one , RRP 149 , I got one for $66. Quite compact and light , not sure how reliable ACER HDD is ;-)

    • +1

As reliable as a WD. The USB interface are usually pretty standard OEM stuff.

    • +1

the case is acer but the hard drive is western digital.

    • Where? Which store?

If it was price marked at $149 how did you get the price down to $82.50 ? ($66 after he 20% discount).

Would you please post the receipt?

I am asking because I will visit HN Bondi Junction (Sydney) tomorrow to try for this.

      • There was posters around the shop saying it was $66…

Receipt added… to original post.. good luck…

  • If you have a 'bad' HN store like my local, they won't take the 20% off that HDD. I was informed that even products in their catalogue won't receive an extra 20% off and that if the 20% off the 'retail' price is any amount lower than the catalogue price, that's the final price.
For example, my partner bought a Vidal Sassoon hair twirler thing - had a catalogue price of $89, however on box it said $99.95 - the 20% discount came off the $99.95.

I wish all HN stores were consistent with price and understanding their own deals!

  • Damn! I just got the 500GB from OW for $58. The Extra 250GB would be nice.

  • Is this a good easy swap for the PS3?

    • In regards to this drive, yes it is a good swap. I'm not really sure why you would need 750GB but it will work.

However I do know some manufacturers (Samsung and Western Digital in particular) ten to have the controller soldered onto the drive itself and is therefore impossible to swap out.

      • I don't need 750gb for the PS3… But at this price I way as well right?
My laptop has two 160gb drives so I could replace one and use that in the PS3 I suppose.
But 160gb isn't enough either.. Especially with PlayTV.

Can anyone confirm if it's soldered onto the controller?
I wouldn't say impossible.. Just unsolder it.

        • No for this Acer model it's not soldered.

      • Hirokuro, is it easy though, do you know how to 'safely' remove the drive out of the enclosure, i bought mine to use with USB for my PS3 (you know making the MUSIC, MOVIES, PHOTOS folders etc), however, if it's easy to remove, I wouldn't mind just replacing the drive inside the PS3 with this one. If you can help please do. Cheers!

        • A strong arm, flat head screw driver and a lot of care, just remove the sticker and split the case along the seam… makes a bit of a mess, but the drive can be removed easily.. the case is pretty ugly afterwards.. but can be reused…. (screw driver gashes everywhere).

No GLue.. only clips.. lots of them holding the two halves together…

  • If Harvey Norman's price tag of $149 is anywhere near accurate. Then this should be a USB3.0 model, I was wondering if anyone could tell me what it was? If it's USB3.0 then $66 is a phenomenal deal, otherwise hardly. I suspect it is though since they have a WD 750GB USB3.0 for $94.40 (after 20%).

    • USB 2.0 . But it is OK for me ;-)

      • +1

Ron Jeremy is still using USB 1.0

        • Isn't that the Greek dude 'yani'. or whatever his name is?!

  • I hope my local stores have this. Furthermore, I hope no one is bagging out ACER cause pretty sure ACER don't make the HDD inside only the cheap plastic around it, and chances are it's pretty hard to stuff up the plastic part.

    • Tell that to the Western Digital, the MyBooks are complete crap.

  • Anyone know if this deal is valid in Sydney?

  • I bought this last year for $78. Good buy!

  • Thanks for posting the details of this one I was ready to buy the 500GB from Officeworks. Also by showing the receipt you posted I was also able to grab $120 worth of iTunes credit for $64, which was an added bonus.

The Harvey Norman at Fortitude Valley wasn't going to sell the hard drive for $66 they were taking the 20% off of the marked price of $149.95 until I showed the girl on the till the receipt she then cleared if with one of the sales guys and the deal was done.

  • HN North Ryde won't budge.

    • dammit

  • OP, you should have bought another HDD, bumping up the total to $250+, then get back $50 from Amex, if you registered for their promo, and effectively, getting the 3rd HDD for $16! ;)

  • Got one from Watergardens (Victoria) by showing the receipt on my mobile, the guy was very specific he would only do one for that price though.
    Thanks Kelvin!

  • will try this out @ Blacktown
