So are we just unlucky not to get the FRONT CAM ? I think the price has been reduced to $99 for a reason. Mytab V9 has reduced the features of the Tab to offset the price. I was keen on FRONT CAM but seems like there is no FRONT CAM! DISSAPPOINTED and feel like wasted my 99 bucks!

    • where did they say on there specs that it had a front camera?

    • You bought this just for the front cam then? 99% of users will not use it and 99% of programs support it , so dont worry you didnt really lose anything :)

    • What a shame bro, disappointed just because of a tiny camera. I'm still loving my tab eventhough it doesn't come with a front camera, particularly because of the price aligning to its functionality.

    • +1

I don't understand what the big deal about the front-facing cam is. I didn't even bother to check that on the specs when I purchased it. I've already got like 2-3 devices with a camera on it, why do I need another one? Am I missing something.

      • Video calls. Android does not support it. But then, the N900 had a "useless" front camera.
Later video support for skype was added. It is coming to Android too.

        • I use fring on my SGT and it supports the front facing cam for video calls. Its free from the market.

        • Ah, of course, video calls. Thanks Freddy.

I've had a chance to play around with the tab after upgrading directly to 2.2.

I am using wifi and did not install the Sim Card.

    Here are the main points:
    * It is not an iPhone or iPad (now that the obvious is out of the way)
    * Storage space is pretty small (about 1.85gb on the SD and 85mb on the internal) but you can always upgrade the SD Card
    * The screen response is ok, though I've had a lot of mis-hits and frustration. No mult-touch, so no pinch and zoom.
    * The Android way of life is more technical than the iOS way. Be expected to take more time to learn functions and wade through a lot of unnecessary and often tech-based choices, with little guidance to boot.
    * The three buttons at the 'bottom' are kind of annoying. They are not grooved so you will miss them in the dark or need to look hard for them - also they may do different things in different apps - bad way of learning. Same with the side buttons, they are too close to each other and feel the same.
    * The screen has the same resolution as a gen 1 phone - but stretched up to fit the 7" screen, so quality is not as good.
    * speed has been fine. I haven't been left waiting very long for any app to load.
    * the Android app store looks very decent, you'll get some good functionality on your tab in no time
    * So far battery has been good. 22 hours uptime and around 3 hours or so of use and 81% battery left
    * Start up time has been good, couple of seconds from standby
    * Works really well if your a Google person (who'd have thunk) as it syncs up with your account and gmail etc quite nicely.

It's all about bang for buck! and this is where it shines. $99 for 7" inch tab, nuff said.

If you can afford or want the best quality, save your pennies. IMHO the iPad has not been close to trumped yet.

    • Your last two lines are spot on!

    • ozgriff: Thanks so much for that rundown. I wasn't sure what to expect when I get mine. That gives me a much clearer idea.

  • Went in to Woden, ACT and none in stock. Checked Big W, Optus store, Dick Smith, Allphone, Aust Post, Woolies and Coles. I did ask them all when they were getting stock in and it varied from tomorrow (Optus store) to 5-6 weeks (Big W) but none were certain - I think all the staff were just guessing when they "might" get stock.

And I so wanted to play on one tonight…. :-(

  • Just saw Optus advertised it on June addition of " Yes Optus ". The local Optus shop (Norwood, SA) has no stock but will take order.
Allphone in Unley shopping centre ( adelaide) has stock.

  • +1

I've search the whole of sydney today, no stock…

    X_X!

    • Optus Shop at World Square is supposedly getting more stock. I went yesterday, and the girl there asked her manager who said 2-3 days. You might wanna give them a call tomorrow morning (8215 6600) and ask, they open at 10am

      Good luck :)

  • Anyone knows where to get or expect one in VIC?

  • +1

Check Australia smaller Post office in Surburbs
I got one from Dickson ACT Today
    Upgraded to 2.2 (150Mb download)
and Unlocked it (earlier post will tell you where)
    No drama with wireless

  • Can anyone direct me to the Optus website where I can buy this for $99? My local Optus shop, Big W and DS were all out of stock. Thank you in advance

  • Thanks guys. I assume we can't order it while it's out of stock and wait for it to eventually come back in stock? Do you think they'll get some new stock in soon?

    • Try getting a rain cheque at Big W.

    • Optus site ARE getting more stock. You can still order now.

      • Sorry, change that, Optus are NOT selling it online anymore.

  • Hey, has anyone else experienced this on the MyTab.

Install a drawing app, like Draw(er), and try and draw right to the edges.

Mine can go to all the way to the bottom edge, and left edge, but can't draw on the top and right edge!

That's why I've been unable to pull down the notifications screen when in portrait mode!

If I press really hard, or use my finger nails then it sort of works half the time.

WOndering if anyone else has come across this issue.

    • +2

Go into setttings then display then calibration and calibrate the screen and see if it makes a difference.

      • Yeah I tried that from the beginning with no success unfortunately.

I can draw with my finger perfectly, in the correct spot I'm pressing at, even with fingernails and and a stylus (since the screen is resistive), so it's definitely properly calibrated.

    • +1

yeah i had the same problem, do as xywolap said and calibrate. fixed the issue for me.

      • what firmware version you have?

        • 2.2 official

    • Also… to pull down the notification screen I have found it is more responsive if you go slightly above the screen onto the frame area and start to drag down from there.

    • === ZTE V9/Light Optus MyTab HARD TO BRING DOWN THE NOTIFICATION BAR PROBLEM: ===

Same here, can't draw on the top and right edge (try draw! from Android market), it's like 20 to 30 pixels, that can't recognize the touch at all, that's why it's so hard to bring down the notification.
see this screen shot showing the problem:
      http://dl.dropbox.com/u/231367/ztev9screen.jpg

Way to overcome that is rotate the screen to make the notification bar at the left edge or bottom edge to make it easy to bring up.
Or if you have CyanogenMod 7 flashed, in CyanogenMod settings, you have 'Tablet Tweek', inside you have option to put the notification bar at the bottom of the screen which is nice now.

Did anyone get one with a front facing camera?

  • Picked up the last one at Australia Post Joondalup WA on Wed. I was told the next closest store in WA with stock was Newman (only a short 1200km drive…). But there are/were 2 in the Perth Distribution centre, and they can be ordered by any post office. Hope that helps someone.

    • Hah, I bought the one just before you, and went back to get yours too, but you'd already bought it. Damn and curse you!! ;-)

The lied btw - PO at Karrinyup mall still had one on Thurs.

  • Got one from TeleChoice Baulkham Hills (Sydney) today.

  • Struggling to find stores with it in Melbourne's West :(

Called a Dozen Telechoice and BigDubs and nothing out there, even called the far remote locations and they were all out also!!

    • how about the big po on keillor road i know they don't open on saturdays though

    • Optus store in Moonee Ponds had a few left yesterday afternoon

      • No stock left in Moonee Ponds.

Most place have sold out. POs are all out as well. No luck at ALL Big W's too.

Looks like we just have to wait till new stock comes in.

        • I went to the extremes of calling stores out in Weribee/Sunbury/Melton, Locations that i thought surely would have some and sold out also..

ahh those were the days when Ozb wasnt incredibly popular and remote locations always had so much stock left over you didnt even need to call up :(

        • Big W Ballarat still had some this evening.
Now they have one less than they did when I arrived ;-)

    • Head north.. Telechoice at Epping Plaza had 3 left as of 6pm Friday night

  • Anybody knowing of any stock left in Sydney CBD?

    • Check World Square optus shop, suppose to be getting new stock (was told 2-3days when i went on wed) this is their number 8215 6600

sorry guys but i'd like to point out something about GPS use, looking at the size of this bad boy i would strongly advise against mounting it on your dash/windscreen, it will block a heap of your view and the cops will have a field day, to save cost on a mount how about a couple of elastic bands and mounting it on the inside of one of your sunvisors ?, not blocking your view and also easy to hear with the speakers being close you your head, i would advise charging first so you don't have to have the power lead running form your cigarette lighter up the roof of your car,

    • Is it GPS-A ? needs to connect to internet to work ?

      • It's both, you can use A-GPS, and it also supports native GPS. Given that you get the right maps and navigation app stored on your device.

        • Does that mean it has a GPS chip and antena built-in ? Which voice guidance software do you use ?

        • The GPS is probably included in the same chips as the 3G.
Phones generally can be slow to get a GPS lock without A-GPS (over internet).
My standalone GPS unit has a much bigger antenna inside than in the phone. (Looks like a block, not a wire.)

      • etwu: Yea, I think so as I can unable / disable GPS as I need - that shouldn't available if the device only got A-GPS (as it only relies on data connection).

I only use Google navigator, which still needs data plan for downloading maps as I move around places (nah, can't drive with one of these, too big and blocking my view). Still trying to find one that has off line map. (currently looking at MapDroyd and NavDroyd)

Freddy: we can use an Android app called GPSFix to make the tablet recognise its location (locked) sooner even without data connection - of course not as good as the GPS unit, but close enough from my experience :)

        • Thanks guys for the feedbacks. I have a spot in my car which is unobstrusive. I'll give it a go.

After about 2 days of usage, here are some tips for using the My Tab, hope everyone find it's handy:
    - For removing the sim card, it is suggested to remove the SD card first (push it in first, then it will pop out), then use your fingertip (not nail) press on the SIM downward a bit and pull it out - you might need a bit force to do that for the first time, but it should be OK afterwards. If you are using a 2-in-1 card (the one cab also be a micro SIM), make sure you are not just pressing the "gold chip" alone as the card may break, and it will stuck in the slot. Of course, do all this when the tab is off and battery has been removed.
    - I am not sure if this happens to anyone, occasionally the Micro SD Card may not mount properly at start up so your apps installed on the SD card cannot be recognised - simply unmount and mount the card again in the settings menu to fix this - or restart the tablet will also do the trick
    - Sound quality - first, invest in a good quality headphone; secondly, in the default music player that comes with the official 2.2 ROM from Optus, you can go to Dolby settings, and there will be a few equalizer presets for you to choose, or you can set your own (i.e. custom), don't expect too much on the improvements over that but at least it should be better than 100% flat. Oh! Come on everyone! A pair of stereo speakers on a tablet like this is a big plus already, the speaker on my HTC incredible S is still mono mate!
    - I strongly urge that don't try to use this tablet as your GPS in your car even it supports it, it is too big and blocks your view - not safe, or you may even got booked.

    Some other thoughts:
    - I cannot listen to FM radio using speakers - headphones only, while this should be a common feature on smartphones or similar devices
    - The wall adapter comes with this device is excellent, it's 1.5A so it charges devices much faster than the 500mA ones. Battery comes with this device is almost perfect, for mine, I haven't re-charge it yet since I charged it for the first time 2 days ago.
    - Screen quality is not that good in terms of contrast (brightness is pretty good though) and colour, but for me all I use is internet, youtube, PDF e-books and MP3, it's excellent for that price.
    - Wifi, 3G, Phone, Radio, GPS, Bluetooth, Mp3, a video player and more, all these for just $99 the whole lot! What more could you want? :) (Let's say $10 for each feature alright)
    - How can I zoom in or out in angry birds if I don't have multi-touch?
    - Playing Bejewled on this tablet is cool! (if you love this game like I do) :)
    - Can iPad swap batteries? :)

    • Thanks Astrotech, nice summary.
The FM radio is using the headphone cord as an antenna, so that's why it does not work without them.
The GPS is working perfectly, you can use it in a car, just not on your windscreen. BTW - what is the law about those kind of devices in a car?
So far haven't got any issues with SD card.

      • Not sure about other states but in WA it is illegal to mount your GPS above your dashboard. Everyone does it though, but it is technically illegal. Only know this becase my husband works for the State Government and they all have to have thier GPS devices mounted below the dash.

    • I bought one mainly to show people photos, but the colour reproduction of the screen (compared to my laptop) is absolutely rubbish. If anyone knows a way to adjust the colour balance of the screen I'd love to hear it, there doesn't seem to be a way in the Android 2.2 screen settings - just brightness.

  • I still couldn't track my order from the Australia Post (Bought it last Wednesday around 4 pm online from optus store)

Does anyone experiencing the same issue?
    CHEERS

    • same here, i have cancelled my order this morning. i will pick one up from stores, hopefully.

      • i cancelled my order with optus, and picked one up in a telechoice shop in QVB Sydney. A shipment just arrived, they told me 7 this morning, and when i called, only 2 left. So i guess they have one left now, if anyone still interested.

      3) silly me, who by mistake +ve your comment, instead of neg (grrr :-) )

With paperwork - invoice, warranty, unused Optus SIM etc.

    Email me on- [email protected]
    Thanks.

Good on you Ozbargained007…..people like purelight should take note.

    • Is it safe to resell the SIM card? Isn't it registered under your name?

      • SIM card hasn't been registered yet.

        • So why do they ask for an ID when you buy one?

        • will be registered in your name…..
either by the stuff you fill out when you buy it, or from your credit card….

        • @jackofspade, so that I dont fill this already crammed thread with more, I have provided the legal answer to your question in this $39 vodafone 3g wifi modem thread: http://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/45920#comment-486783

      • Just don't sell it to a terrorist.

        • that's ironic, for someone with your avatar ;-)

    • +4

Sold the Optus My Tab this afternoon.
Thanks for all your emails, including those who offered to pay me more!

  • according to 2 different optus shops(macarthur, chatswood-nsw), they are restocking the items but no definite date.. both said sometime next week..

  • +1

Just called up optus again, apparently my order is just one of the many that have had to be backordered and cannot be sent until they've received more stock.
Irritating, especially considering that others that ordered at the same time or later have gotten notification that it's on the way.
CSR stated they were hopeful more stock would arrive on Monday or Tuesday, and that orders would be processed and sent out by Thursday or Friday.

So much for the security of actually ordering from the source, probably just going to cancel my order and not bother, there's definitely no stock locally.

    • +1

Cancel just because the device is not available for the next let's say 5 days?
Hey, it was not planned purchase that you needed it by certain date, right? It was because the price went down, so no pressing immediate need, correct?
So what difference a week makes? I would understand if it would be let's say as with Kogan, where you would have to wait 2 months and by then the price would go down everywhere else, but I do believe it will be still good price in a week for the tablet :-)

      • I do agree that it is a good product for the price, and while it was an impulse buy of sorts, I'm irritated by Optus' customer service, not that I'll have to wait.

Optus had taken the money for it something like 6 or so hours before they updated their website to say they were out of stock.
They still have my money and it's looking as though it will be at least a week & a half before I even see a hint that it's shipped.. and I had to chase that information up from them.
It's taken 5 calls to them to get even that, still haven't gotten any response from their "contact us" page.
I shouldn't have to chase up a big retailer like this just to find a date that they MIGHT be getting stock in.

It certainly sounds as though there's many others whose orders have been delayed and put on backorder, and Optus has known about this since yesterday, yet has anyone received even a form email stating what's happening?

        EDIT..
Seems people are now starting to get the aforementioned emails.
        Typical hahaha :)

Ordered a Optus Mytab from the Optus store Thursday 1 June 2011. $99 inc. delivery.
Just got a sms from optus store saying my order has been delayed, you will be contacted when a delivery date has been confirmed. Looks like Optus Store has oversold their product!

  • +2

I saw at least 3 MyTabs today when commuting to work.

Damn now I don't feel special anymore T.T

    • +2

Haha, why not sell it for $198 here, $1 cheaper than Purelight?

      • +4

Ah purelight, the legacy of broden lives on!!

maybe I should sell mine to purelight for $198, then he can sell it for a profit when he raise "the price to $249 bucks". I'll even pay the postage. Damn I'm a nice guy.

  • Melbourne West peoples, Wyndam Vale Telechoice store has 1 i believe left, I got 1 and there was another.. Unless its on hold for somebody worth to give them a try..

Cant wait to flash it with CM7 =]

    • Me too :(

This email is from Optus Online Sales Support to advise you that delivery of your OMB My Tab Prepaid B with Order ID QTJ873911 has been delayed.

      • +4

Me too, same email. I called Optus straight away and asked what was going on, especially as they have already charged my credit card 2 days ago, but only now are Optus telling me that there is going to be a delay in holding up their end of the deal. The guy was very friendly, knew instantly the tablet I was asking about, and here is what he said:
        * They are out of stock.
        * It's on back order.
        * They had not anticipated the volume of demand that they encountered.
        * They are no longer selling it online.
        * We should receive a follow-up email or text in 3 days time, telling us when our units will arrive.
        * I tried to get a sense of delivery time-frame, asked if it was more likely to be 1 week or a 1 month, and he said "oh no, it won't be anywhere near a month", so sounds more like a week or so.
        * I confirmed that if the message we got in 3 days indicated a long delivery time, that we could still cancel and get our money back, given what has happened, and he said "yes".

        So there you go!
