Microsoft Surface Pro 6 i5 / 8GB / 128GB - Platinum Bundle with Type Cover For $1197 @ Harvey Norman

940

Found this on the Harvey Norman website for $1197 it’s not the cheapest ever but i think it’s the cheapest going around at the moment. Type cover included. Everyone else is selling this for $1348 without the type cover so $151 less is not bad with the type cover.

Worth it - typing on the same setup with a blue keyboard

    • +2

ditto. love it. returned the Go for this. worth $$$ upgrade

      • +2

Me too. Writing with black type cover though. Love how versatile it is.

  • Interested in the i7, but the price gap ($800) is huge!

    • difference in performance is around 5%, is it worth the gap?

      • +20

Hardly worth it. i7 in these thin and light machines are pointless due to worse battery life and thermal limitations. i5 is good enough for 99% of people

        • I second this.

      • +1

i5 model is fanless whereas I think the i7 uses active cooling (i.e. has a fan)? This was introduced in the 7th gen Core i-series and has continued for the 8th gen.

Please correct me if I'm wrong.

        • +1

Consider yourself corrected. My i5 SP 2017 definitely has a fan.

        • Nothing stops you from using a cooling pad or case with fans on an i5.

      • Does it have extra RAM? Often the i7 model has 16GB.

      • The iGPU is better, still not a gaming machine but you will notice it.
But largely its ransom for 16Gb RAM which IS worth it if you're using it heavily (there's no technical reason why you can't combine 16Gb RAM with an i5).
If you need 16Gb RAM you don't have a choice.
If you don't know whether you need 16Gb RAM then you probably don't.

        • not my kind of thing, I tried surfaces and similar devices, but the screen is too small to be productive, not suitable for gaming or batch photo editing either, and the artificial platform limitations (like you mentioned, "want more ram? pay $600 more for i7!" kind of thing) drive me nuts. so I haul around a mobile workstation for productivity and gaming, and when I purely want something compact for entertainment or quick photo proofing I have a tablet. so my comment was just about CPUs, as within the 15W TDP family i5 and i7 are almost indistinguishable in real life scenarios :)

Hard to believe that Harvey Norman is the cheapest?

    • +1

I don't remember in my entire life HN ever being the cheapest lol

      • +1

Even when HN has massive sales, they still aren't the cheapest I find, and then news articles say stupid things like "we don't know why customers are shopping online more" and then HN doesn't adapt to it. And their website often has so little information if I'm interested in something they have.

So I only end up buying things from them that don't change in price (like Apple products and high end surface products like surface books) or when it's convenient to get it on interest free.

Otherwise, I spend my time trawling Ozbargain.

  • -1

way better than any apple product…. but better off paying the extra 300-400 odd and getting bigger SSD…. 256 was on sale recently for 1590, and it's all black

    • +1

Just add a microSD card of 400GB?

      • +2

        barely the speeds of SSD

        • +6

For 'mass storage' it isn't going to be noticeably slower. But even still for 99% of purposes there won't be any difference in the speed apparent to the users.

      • I just chucked in a 128gb card. No problems so far.

  • Which is better?

    Microsoft Surface Laptop i5 8GB 256GB $1200:
    https://www.ebay.com.au/itm/Microsoft-Surface-Laptop-i5-8GB-…

    • Different horses for different courses. One is a laptop the other is a convertible. I personally prefer the convertible form-factor but each to their own.

      • Think I go with the laptop, as it has a bigger screen and larger SSD.
The Pro has better portability, but I already have an iPad for that.
        Thanks!

        • 7th gen cpu vs 8th gen, I would pick extra 2 cores

          • @rainbowyen: Is this one 8th gen?

Edit: I was on my mobile and I missed it. Looked it up on PC. It's 8th gen.

    • +1

thats only Surface Laptop which is an old model

but if you are just going to be using it for Uni and general browsing then shouldnt matter

Try to look for Surface Laptop 2 deals though, should be some EOFY sales

      • Thanks. So the old surface laptop is 7th gen? Has less CPU cores than this Surface Pro?

Guess I have to wait for the Surface Laptop 2 sale.

        • Yeah has less cores and is generally slower, I wouldnt get one at this stage esp since Laptop 3 is probably coming out in 3 months

  • What is the cheapest anyone has ever seen this for?

  • Looking to get one of these for my mother who is dead set on a hybrid for some reason. Probably more than she needs but everything else seems to be under powered. If the build quality is solid and the operation is responsive and hassle free the extra money would be worth it.

    • I don't think you can put a price on the 'it just works' factor. Easily worth the extra $500 over a more 'reasonable' product IMO.

    • I’d gladly pay the extra 500 or what ever it costs to not have to to be over the phone tech support for when “this stupid thing just isn’t working”.

    • -1

Looking to get one of these for my mother who is dead

Sorry to hear, you might be able to get a few votes put of the situation

  • Why are these better than laptops? Can you use this kickstand on your lap or the angle is no good?

    • Caters to different people. If you don't care for a physical keyboard and use a tablet more, why get a laptop or in some cases two separate devices? Supposedly its pretty bad as a "lap"top for some people.

    • If the kickstand is the same as the SP4 then yes.

    • +1

Yeah, we have an SP4 which gets used daily on the couch, often in competition for lap space with a cat. Works well, can't complain.

  • Decent price - last year I got the lower powered M3/4/128 version for about $700. Good build quality, battery life around 8 hours. I think this current version has even better battery life? Enough for my basic needs - web, emails, spreadsheets and youtube. The 128gb is enough for me, as I use a 200gb microsd for storage of movies. Not my main computer, but amazing for a travel/portable computer.

  • +1

Worth pointing out that a Black i5/8GB/256GB SP6 with a Type cover (though black) goes for $1578.

Microsoft hardware support is poor at best. Never will I buy MS hardware again. Sons surface pro 4 got the screen shakes. Just because it is 2 months past warranty, no fix. I know Apple would have fixed it.

    • +2

If a laptop that isn't cheap and nasty becomes unfit for purpose after only 14 months (assuming only 12 month warranty), this sounds like a major failure under Australian Consumer Law, and it should therefore be fixed or refunded.

      • -3

Laptop is 3 years and 2 months old. The fix is available to machines purchased 3 years or less. It's a BYO school machine. I had the option to buy a levano for $800 but choose the MS surface $1500 thinking better quality and service. also didn't want son to be teased for cheap machine at new school( as it turns out no one got teased ). I'm going to buy cheap machines from now on. As long as the specs are good and no bad reviews. Microsoft can go …..

        • Would they? Would they? I am personally and for work getting in touch with all sorts of devices…
I am pretty much the goto "IT / TechGuy" for my friends/famliy

Depending on the use case that might be Android, Windows(Usually "Business" Laptops), Apple, Linux (usually either self assembled, raspberry pies, or HP/Dell/Lenovo "business"/"gaming" towers)…

And as long as we are not talking about $3000++ Workstations (or prepaid extended onsite warranties) I never had any of success with any getting anything fixed after 3years…
And even the $3000++ devices that got fixed, usually only got fixed out of "goodwill" after I mentioned ACL…

          • @Binicorn: Good will goes a long way. What is ACL?

            • @marxllw: Long Story short: Australian Consumer Law

              https://www.accc.gov.au/consumers/consumer-rights-guarantees…

              so probably not 100% "goodwill"…

but any "mobile sub $3000 device" will be something NO one would fix as "goodwill"

(and out of personal experience a certain fruit brand would probably not do it… it's hard enough to get them to follow the ACL when it's obviously "more comprehensive" then their official warranty policy)

          • @Binicorn: There is just lot process to go through with ACL. You would generally consider ACL once you have encounter the major failure. It is not somewhere you can fit everything in. When it's under warranty, it will be contract/breach of warranty of guarantee. When it is out of warranty, you need to consider a situation that whether a reasonable person would believe the repair is needed or not.

Overall, Retailers are conscientious. As long as you buy from big brands, you will never bother with ACL, or submit any form to ACCC. However, you can still question staff by saying do you really want to report you to ACCC.

FROM my experience, it is better to go with retailers. It is just so many process to go through with manufacture, for example, Lenovo official website.

It just saves time with JB Hi-fi or Harvey Norman.

    • +1

Crapple would ask you to buy a new one

    • We had to take our SP4 back to JB after a year because the charger stopped charging. Wasn't the charger. So 0/1 for faultless operation. Since then, 2yrs solid going. Happy with the hardware. Better with Linux but haven't fixed the wifi not working when waking from sleep.

  • Would be nice if it had a USB C port. I guess at that price point beggars can't be choosers

    • +1

Usb C for what? Usb c still isn't a reliable enough port. I repair Dell, Lenovo and HP commercial units. Usb c ports failing very often. It's that port or the usb dock cable. Hopefully the next gen fixes these issues.

      • I agree, USB C is nowhere near as stable as traditional USB. I find that a little bump or knock on tthe cable can cause a slight disconnect.

  • Surface Pro 7 due soon?

  • Has anyone successfully purchased one of these my order was reviewed and mysteriously cancelled.

    • +1

Bought one in person from HN Nunawading, Vic. For due diligence I also wandered over to JB and TGG to see if they could beat.

JB would price match, TGG only 1350 without the type cover which was surprising since I showed them the HN website ad. As a side note, only JB had display prices that reflected their website and HN wasn't advertising this deal in store at all.

      • Thats weird because my JB wouldn't price match because they don't have the same bundle.

      • I was able to price match at my local JB store (Rockhampton). I just bought one today. Don't believe me? Here's the photo. I bought a go pro charger with it for my gopros so that brings it up to around 1300.

        https://1drv.ms/u/s!Aot-_iE5idROheskVg4kaIpghiORBw

        • The jb hi fi I bought it from price matched,I'd rather go anywhere other than Harvey Norman

  • Note that the Surface Pro 6 does not come with Windows 10 Pro but only Windows 10 Home

  • Hi guys

Anyone here has experience running AutoCAD, revit, sketchup and photoshop on this thing?

    Did it run moderately well?

Looking into getting one of these for this main purpose. I don’t intend to game but that would be a bonus (light games)

Honestly Tired of lugging a laptop around on travel. Surface book is also prohibitively out of my budget, thus considering this.

    • +1

      Anyone?

      • Actually went ahead and purchased this speccd surface with keyboard, along with a pen and 400gb micro sd for expansion.

Softwares I mentioned above ran well and I’m pleased. I Installed not so recent versions (but not so old either) as they were less resource intensive (cad especially) than the more newer ones.

    • +1

I wouldn't. I have an spro 3 - spro 6 is basically just a better cpu. No space for dedicated graphics.

      • It’s not bad either.

  • Waiting for this sale to return for EOFY
