Toyota RAV4 (2019) Discussion Thread

Just wondering if anyone else is looking forward to the new 2019 - RAV4?

Looks to be a very solid release and easily the best iteration of the RAV4 to date - especially the hybrid options.

With the impending release / availability later this month? thought there may be others in the same boat or at the very least interested.

I am aware that there is not much information of the Australian variants (model names / badges, pricing etc.) as of yet - but I really do hope we get an equivalent of the XSE (North America).

This will also be provided to Toyota Australia to investigate.

                Wow are you 12yo? 😂

You just claimed that an article quoting a Toyota press release was 'speculation' and 'not official information'.

Clearly I'm doing more to promote the company and counteracting your misinformation, so feel free to send them this post and see if you can hear their laughs 😂

Everything else I've said has been mentioned in Toyota press releases, despite you not actually reading them.

@spackbace: OzBargain premium membership can’t come soon enough… I’m all out of negs in one thread, again

Who to trust though, a guy with a track record in car sales that is well known to the community and is wearing an employee badge… or, a 12 month old member with 27 comments???

                    @[Deactivated]: Via private message…

FYI A report has been submitted along with evidence to Toyota Australia for investigation not only for this post but all other comments to other posts by yourself and Spackbace.

I am sure Toyota give a rats arse about me. I don’t work for them in any capacity. I have never worked for a Toyota dealership. And what other comments are Toyota going to care about me making? That I love their vehicles? They should be suitably angry with me over those.

If you have that much time to spend on ozbargain you need some help.

I wish… but I have been a member here for 7 years. So it makes it about 2 comments a day on average. Sooooo much time…

Not something to be proud of having that many comments and posts.

I think it is. Many people on here come to me for information when they need it. People like myself and Spackbace are known to the community to be professionals in our fields by users based on our comments on these forums.

                    Completely useless.

The regular comments and private messages I get from other users thanking me for my help or asking me for help would prove your comment as “completely useless”.

If anyone had half a brain they wouldn’t listen to you.

Happy to have you prove me wrong at any time. At least I am happy to prove what I do for a job. I do have an AMA about being a mechanic where I provided proof of what I do. You, on the other hand…

Enjoy your posts as I won’t be replying to any.

                    I will. And “awww, that’s a shame”

                    Pathetic.

No, sending me a private message and then blocking me without right of reply is pathetic. :)

You think you’re smart. News flash, get a life and stay away from topic you have no idea about.

I’m a mechanic, I don’t think I’m smart. But the problem is, if there is something that I do know about and it is cars. The life I have revolves around being intimate with cars. I’ve spent about 1/2 my life working on them and my knowledge on cars is more than what I would expect from a journalist…

Saw the RAV4 in person a few weeks ago at the Tokyo Mega Web, looks wise it reminded me of my Subaru Outback for some reason. I was actually slightly disappointed, because it looked really awesome in the photos. In real life, it looks a bit "Meh", but looks nicer than the current RAV though.

Interior was roomier than my Outback and the boot feels bigger too, everything looked nice, but there was nothing about the car that made a lasting impression. It'll still be a car I'll cross-shop with the new Outback when it comes out, the RAV feels more practical, roomier and has better use of space.

Ahh my eyes, it's so ugly!! I don't get why Toyota/Lexus are going with the boxed wheel arches.

    • +3

With you - the design is pretty good (I'd give it a full 'good' if it weren't for that ugly American-style front squareness) but those wheel arches really look stupid to me.

    • +1

Just Google imaged it. It can't be unseen now. Wtf are you doing Toyota? I'll give it a chance as cars can look better in the flesh (occasionally)

      • And I remember the first gen Rav4's were babies. Now theyre massive, looks bigger than the previous generation kluger…

        • And I remember the first gen Rav4's were babies. Now theyre massive, looks bigger than the previous generation kluger…

This is the same size as the outgoing model. The design makes it look bigger

And lemme guess… you drive a VT Commodore, in white, that hasn’t been washed in 200 years, 20 inch, brake dust tarnished alloys in the front, 16 inch “interceptors” on the back, sporting pink, plastic checker plate floor mats and ill fitted/loose pink piped seat covers. It has 6~8 air fresheners hanging from the mirror in a vain attempt to mask the stink of a thousand darts smashed out in the over flowing ash tray. And to top it off, a “such is life” and “RIP 1998~2017 Jayden” stickers on the rear window with Pink blasting out the speakers.

You see how silly stereotypes are, and I got all that just from reading your username…

      • -1

Lol what? Why is it silly when people in my family which are asian women drive rav4s and that is what I think of. Also why would I be driving a dirty commodore? Are you talking about yourself miss pegasus?

        • +1

Ahhhh… see, now we have a frame of reference. You didn’t establish any of this when you made your original comment. Enjoy your negs.

  • Is 7-seater version of 2019 RAV4 also coming?

    • Eww no

      • Aww that's disappointing..

        • If you think these are pretty then you need to get your eyes checked lol

Besides, we have multiple 7-8 seater SUVs, no need for a 7-seater RAV4

    • 7 seater Klugger is pretty decent.

  • i found this iteration of the RAV4 to have changed a lot in looks, but most definitely is the size, it's a little too big I feel. Also the american like grille is a little too much for me. It's a pity, because the current gen one actually looked great, and I thought that they could do something to spruce it up, but now it just looks like nothijng that resembles a RAV4 anymore.

    • +1

      Exterior dimensions are identical…

  • Going by US pricing, it won't be cheap. Interior and amenities wise, it's a step up from even the Lexus NX, which by all accounts is extremely disappointing.
Great to see that Toyota is finally using panaroof on the plebian cars. Hoping that and the ventilated seats do make it to the AUS market, oh and the JBL premium sound.

I'll be eagerly awaiting for the 2nd gen Lexus NX which should be coming hopefully soon.

    • Thats a good point, the top spec model would probably be quite close to the base NX

Possibly around the 50K mark drive away.

My partner just bought a new VW tiguan.

Wish she waited to see the new rav 4 hybrid though, considering her biggest complaint is the cost of filling up her tank in her new fuel chugging SUV (previous car was a carolla)

She didnt like the old rav 4 but i test drove the new hybrid Camry and I tell ya what - I was impressed.

Might test drive the new rav 4 just to compare.

    • Yeah my missus has the new Tiguan, in urban driving conditions we get shocking consumption about 13L/100kms in the 132TSI AWD. On interstate road trips it dipped down to about 7L/100, the claimed consumption is total BS

  • +1

    According to Whirpool

    Hybrid Pricing:

    GX 2WD Hybrid $35,140
    GX AWD Hybrid $38,140

    GXL 2WD Hybrid $38,140
    GXL AWD Hybrid $41,140

    CRUISER HYBRID 2WD $41,640
    CRUISER HYBRID AWD $44,640

    • Thanks @phocus

I wonder if that includes all on-road costs - time will tell I guess

      Looks promising though.

      • No, those prices are list prices including GST
Add on stamp duty, 12 months rego, dealer delivery

Those prices are the real deal tho…

        • how much extra does all those add on?

Just had a look at NZ site and their top spec is around $45.5k drive away

          • +2

@phocus: Stamp duty varies between the models (and between states), so anywhere from $4,000-$7,000 extra for on-roads (roughly)

Our Edge model works out to around $53k

            • @spackbace: I'm not sure if this is something you can share and perhaps it's too dependent on individual dealers, but do you think there's likely to be much room for price negotiation when these come out?

              • @JayTeeHaitch: There will be a little, but there will also be a case of dealers not wanting to, and pushing the limited availability and the desirability of it.

                Supply & demand basically.

Though I'm sure there are dealers who will also quoted rock-bottom prices just to attempt to steal business from others.

                • @spackbace: After this has been out for 6 months and the initial demand surge has passed, what would be considered a good discount?
10% or free driveaway & DD? Or does it sometimes get better than that when people need to hit targets?

                  • @Viper8: Entirely depends on the profit in them but it's likely they wont have heaps. New Corolla and Camry have about $1500 in them

Are there any plans to bring the 2-tone trim to Australia for the Hybrid Cruiser in 2019 or 2020? Ideally would like a white body with black roof without having to wrap my car.

    • Unfortunately nothing has been mentioned in regards to the 2-tone

    • Agreed, that is what really caught my eye when it was first announced / revealed at the international Motor Shows

They have it for the C-HR so was surprised it didn't come into play.

Also no two-tone for the Edge (white roof)

  • @Spackbace is there any new info regarding Car Play? or do you think a more concrete statement will be available on Wednesday / release day?

    • or do you think a more concrete statement will be available on Wednesday / release day?

Hopefully but I wouldn't hold my breath either. They likely won't say anything until it's actually in the cars

  • When does the embargo lift on journo reviews?

    • Tomorrow I believe all media embargoes lift

Though there's a ton of US/UK reviews to check out. Interesting that most of the US reviewers were around 7-8/10, yet Top Gear UK gave it like 5/10. Maybe just not their market I guess

      • +1

        Ok thanks.
Top gear is a car comedy, not car review lol.

      • +1

        Thought today was Wed lol…

    • CarAdvice is attending the media preview drive this week. Road test reports are embargoed until Friday 17 May 2019.

      • Thanks for the info.

  • Would be interesting to see what the Australian reviews are like - since it seems we will be getting a different version in terms of variants and features available etc.

BTW @spackbace I was speaking to a dealer yesterday and I asked about Car Play and he did say that the 'later' cars will have it standard (later this year) .. but he was not sure about retrofitting or if it is at all possible (though Mazda has proven it is?)

    • +2

Yep, it'll be retrospective. Shame he hasn't been told that as it's really handy info to know

      • ahhh ok, thanks for the clarification.

Agreed, definitely very handy info to know and relay to potential customers.

DO you think there will be a cost involved for the retrospective upgrade if purchasing now - as opposed to waiting for it to come standard

        • +2

We're being told no, there won't be a cost

  • For the 1st time in decades I really like this NEW RAV4. Bigger, Bolder, Roomier, Safety Tech 2.0, Digital rear vision, and it's a Hybrid!.

Definitely gonna go test drive in the coming weeks.

    • +1

Not sure if we will get the digital rear vision here

  • Anyone got any idea about pricing??

  • @vxm the RRP is listed above, thanks to @phocus - no word on the Drive Away prices yet though.

Saw this on Whirlpool forums, so credit to Jordyn_x

Also done a quick check comparing overseas RAVs features our model Hybrids are missing,
    • Windscreen deicer
    • Heated steering wheel
    • Ventilated seats
    • Heated second row outboard seats
    • Panoramic sunroof
    • Adaptive LED headlights
    • Digital rearview mirror
    • Kick to open tailgate
    • Two tone paint (black roof, mirrors & gloss wheel arch trim)

    In regards to the above;

I think the Panoramic Sunroof is only available on the Edge here - weird its not an upgrade option for those willing to pay extra for it.

    • It's a shame the features/trim attracting me to the Rav4 won't me made available in Australia.

Do you guys know if there are any laws/restrictions to prevent me importing the car from Japan myself?

      • Agreed!

I really wanted the exact XSE version here.

Might wrap or get certain parts resprayed to try and look like it - wont be exactly the same but almost.

      • surely it's not worthwhile for just those features to import one from Japan

        What about the warranty?

      • -1

What features? A few of those Australia doesn't need as it's not cold enough, foot operated rear doors are kinda dumb, and the 2-tone you could always vinyl wrap if you badly want it

  • +2

    Pricing and spec released

    And this:

As we’ve reported in a separate story, the new RAV4 will also be the first Toyota sold in Australia with Apple Car Play and Android Auto. However, the smartphone mirroring tech will not be available locally until late 2019. Vehicles sold before then can have the system “retro-fitted” free of charge once it becomes available.

    • awesome its been confirmed

    • Thanks. Which one do you recommend to buy for city family use?

      • Hands down would be the hybrid. You'll save on fuel and the 2.5 Hybrid engine is nice. Just a GX unless you want to spend extra and get the upper models.

    • There goes my business - I've been fitting Kenwood ACP/AA units to Toyotas for a few years now, will be looking down other avenues now. :(

Looks like retro-fitted is free for the new RAV4, but not for the new Camry and Corolla.

  • Very disappointed that the only petrol mechanical AWD model is 47k.
    Guess I'll be going Subaru…

    • What do you want the car for?

      • Occasional family softroading. Not having ability for engine to power the rear means no deal. When the battery runs out on the hybrid (which is plausible offroad) it becomes 100% FWD.

  • Interested in the hybrid with the lowest fuel consumption. Is the 2wd hybrid or the 4wd hybrid going to be the more fuel efficient and what consumptions are they both listed at from the factory? I've read 6l/100km elsewhere.

    • +1

      2.0-litre four-cylinder petrol front-drive, CVT auto, 127kW/203Nm, 6.5L/100km
      2.5-litre four-cylinder petrol hybrid front-drive, CVT auto, 131kW/221Nm, 4.7L/100km
      2.5-litre four-cylinder petrol hybrid all-wheel-drive, CVT auto, 131/221Nm, 4.8L/100km
      2.5-litre petrol all-wheel-drive, eight-speed auto, 152kW/243Nm, 7.3L/100km

      From here: https://www.caradvice.com.au/754131/2019-toyota-rav4-pricing…

      • Thankyou. I've been searching but didn't find that source. The 2.5L version @ 4.7L or 4.8/100km is tempting. Not quite as economic as the Corolla or Camry @ 4.1 or 4.2L/100km but a more practical vehicle. Interesting to see real world fuel consumption vs the Corolla and Camry.

        • Camry uses premium fuel, corolla and rav4 use regular 91 :)

Real world Corolla gets that sorta figure, not sure on Camry (I haven't had access to a demo long enough to know, given the lack of stock currently).

Hybrid definitely pays for itself after 3 years or so

          • @spackbace: If you drive 12,500km per year (average is very close to this) and pay $1.50/L for fuel (reasonable medium-term average prediction) then you would save $338 per year driving the 2WD Hybrid (4.7L/100km) vs the 2WD 2.0 petrol (6.5L/100km).
Now with the hybrid costing $2,500 more, it would take about 7.5 years to break even.

For the hybrid to pay for itself in just 3 years you would need to be driving 31,000km per year. This is not reasonable for the average consumer.

            • @Viper8: Except you're comparing a 2L engine vs a 2.5L hybrid engine. Plus the hybrid in GX form gets keyless entry/start and dual-zone climate control.

So not only is your $2500 saving you fuel, it's getting you more power/torque and more features.

Better comparison is RAV4 Edge AWD (though 8-speed auto) vs Hybrid AWD. 7.3L/100 vs 4.8L/100 = 2.5L/100km saving. That's $468.75/year difference in your scenario. Just purely to highlight the savings that a hybrid engine gets

              • @spackbace: I noticed this when I bought the Corolla. We bought the Ascent bottom of the range hybrid and it actually came with almost all the features of the middle of the range SX model. I thought it was odd that it was sold as the bottom of the range.

For for the extra we paid for the hybrid, we actually ended up getting more car for the money we paid. So, a fairer comparison would be to the SX non-hybrid, which was almost the same price.

  • @Spackbace Just wondering is there any indication of the possible wait times for orders?

From memory at one point the Corolla ZR Hybrid had a 3 month wait time at some stage this year.

    • About 2 months worth in the country right now, ready to go. So depends on popularity

And looks like the official site is finally loading:
    https://www.toyota.com.au/main/rav4

  • This might be off the topic question. Since I am going to buy a new RAV4 Hybrid GXL within next 1 week time, I am asking this here.

Can a sales person give a discount than the location-based price on the Toyota website?

    • Do you mean try to negotiate a better price?

If that is the case then definitely worth a try to see what they can offer you.

      • Yes, I called one of the Dealer here and he told me a price which is $592 higher than web price and an additional $600 for metallic paint. It's totally weird.

    • +2

Generally with a new model launch there's very little in the way of discounting, as there's no incentives from the manufacturer to drive down the price. Incentives start becoming available to dealers way down the track.

      • Thank you for the information

  • Just test drove a Cruiser and GXL Hybrids in 2WD. Drove nicely as expected. I was quoted $43,355 on road for the GXL Hybrid 2WD and $47,750 for the Cruiser Hybrid 2WD. I like the Atomic Rush (red) and Electric Blue colours the best. Hmmmm….food for thought

    • +1

Those prices seem to be more than what is quoted on the Toyota Australia website including on roads - plus paint (non glacier white).

      • GXL hybrid is website price including metallic, cruiser is $500 more than website for some reason

  • Has anyone managed to bargain down the price at all? We're looking at the GX 2WD Hybrid
Also curious if anyone has pricing on accessories.

    • have you got a price on gx 2wd hybrid?

  • The hybrid only makes sense if you drive a lot of km's, or want better acceleration.

If you drive 12,500km per year (average is very close to this) and pay $1.50/L for fuel (reasonable medium-term average prediction) then you would save just $338 per year driving the 2WD Hybrid (4.7L/100km) vs the 2WD 2.0 petrol (6.5L/100km).
The hybrid costs $2,500 more, so it would take about 7.5 years to break even at 12,500km per year.

The simple fact is that the 2.0L is already extremely fuel efficient.

For me the better argument to buy the hybrid is for the extra power and torque on offer.

    • and potential resale value considering we are moving towards hybrid/electric cars

      • +1

I would argue hybrids have much poorer resale due to the costs of replacing battery packs.
Just take a look at used hybrids for sale.

    • +2

I agree with you on the fuel consumption alone. However, you do also get the better headlights, dual zone climate control and smart start on top of the additional power and quieter ride. So for me, we don't need to break even in 5 years, you're buying more than just the fuel efficiency. Even if we only save $1000 over the first 3 years, I think $1500 is a pretty good price for those extras. Everyone values different features differently though.
