Does anyone else see "Made for Australia" and think over-priced and lacking dual SIM?

    • +5

      Considerable, isn't it? LOL

      • +5

Yeah, the weaker Samsung Isocell cameras, slower Exynos processor, and worse battery life, are major reasons to be concerned.

Just wished the Snapdragon versions could come with warranty, and also let users have unlocked bootloader/root/twrp/custom roms.

        • Are custom roms still a thing for Samsung? I've moved away from them and onto Xiaomi. But last I heard they locked down everything pretty hardcore. Are things up and running again?

        • +4

They had 2 updates to the camera processing. Also battery life has almost doubled for me on Exynos. I came from p3xl and I'm not having any issues with camera, battery or CPU. It's far faster than p3xl.

          • +3

@onlinepred: doubled? thats hard to believe, whats ur screen on time?

            • @striker5950: For you I will give you the only information you can make sense of if I give you SOT only. 2xl: 4hrs sot, 3xl: 3hrs, s8: 3.5hrs, s9: 3.5hrs, s10e: 4 hrs. When I got s10e it would last maybe 2 hrs. After the April update things changed.

              • +1

@onlinepred: Those are really low sot. You must be flogging the thing.

                • +1

@S2: That's the thing, SOT is a useless measurement except for a single individual. I don't try at all to save battery and use the device for what it is. Sure I can get 12 hrs out of it if I just play a movie with everything off but what does that mean to you?

    • +9

      Yes it's made for Aus.

Overpriced - tell me something that is not over priced in Australia.

Lacking dual sim - your telecom does not want dual sim.

      • +2

        Heaps of things are cheaper.

People just still have the dollar parity mindset plus forget that US prices never include sales tax. Looking at US prices you need to add 50% now to convert to Australian dollars incl. GST.

I was looking at the Amazon Echo stuff just now and it's pretty much all cheaper on the Australian site.

Echo Dot - US$40 is about $75 - costs $59 here (or $79 for two)
        Echo - US$100 is about $150 - costs $100 here
        Echo Plus - US$150 is about $230 - costs $230 here
        Echo Spot - US$130 is about $200 - costs $150 here
        Echo Show - US$230 is about $350 - costs $300 here

ETA: That's not including the 20% off bargain at the moment.

    • I think warranty and local feature support. Last time I had an import s8, it never got Telstra updates that allowed certain features for RCS

      • I would pay a small premium for the local supply, but baulk at paying a premium for a lesser product.

        • I mean if your need dual Sim then that's fine, if not doesn't make much sense.

          • +1

@onlinepred: I only buy dual SIM phones. Personal SIM in slot 1, work SIM in slot 2.

    • +1

      One word: Warranty

    • +1

Overpriced with no dual Sim and Exynos CPU I want Snapdragon

  • +1
    • That is a grey import.

      • Is this running the Qualcomm Snapdragon chipset?

        • Nope, so even a lot of the grey imports are going to be running the Exynos. This one is also running that

The ones that are running the Snapdragon is the Chinese and American versions. Everyone else is getting Exynos

      • +1

The Grey import is much better. Check the whirlpool thread regarding this

    • Man, I hope JB price match. I have $700 in JB gift cards.

      • +1

Sorry to burst your bubble but the S10+ 128gb doesn't come in dual sim for the Aussie market… At least 512gb version and above.

        • +1

Bubble burst. I just realised it isn't Aussie stock

  • +1

Does anyone know why made for Australia means no dual sim?

    • +7

Because carriers don't want to subsidise a phone that lets you use their competitors Sim card.

      • So, they keep customers away buying their phones altogether.

      • +1

It's your phone you should do what you want on it. Therefore I will never sign up any telcos offering single sim phones

    • For users with multiple numbers, the carriers expect you to buy multiple phones.

      • So, users buy other phones. and used the old one for 2nd sim

    • +2

Yeah this is most likely the issue. They should have different outright stock. I never go on contract with a phone and I assume others do the same. We get stiffed by the carriers nonetheless :(

      • +3

I got my P20 Pro Dual sim through JB on a 24mth Telstra plan. Dual sim has been great to have, especially when overseas.

  • +1

This brings it on par roughly with the Huawei P30 ($1044.50 after 5% off, then $200 gift card from huawei promo).

  • +8

Just putting my 2 cents out there. This is the best phone I have owned in a long time. Previous phones: s8,s9, pxl, p2xl, p3xl. I'm a huge fan of the size of the device, it's incredibly easy to hold and use one handed.

    • Yeh I agree, I came from a S6.

I just need to find a case that has a decent grip. I'm currently using Spigen Neo Hybrid and it is very slippery.

      • +1

I got official silicone Case. It's fantastic

      • Got an Aspen case from EFM, nice and grippy with 6m drop tested.

I just got the equivalent for my Samsung Galaxy S10 today and it feels great! Gives me that assurance that if it drops it'll be fine.

Has a raised lip over the top and bottom of the screen, has that smooth silicon feel, and it might be nitpicky from my end but I like that it also covers the bottom I/O ports rather than leaving this huge exposed area. They have an eBay page too if you have coupons or gift cards.

        • That looks alright but shame it only has black color. Do you know the difference between the official samsung one??

          https://www.harveynorman.com.au/samsung-galaxy-s10e-silicone…

          • @Homr: I can't say with absolute certainty but from looking at the photos the inner lining doesn't seem to be made of a microfibre lining which the Spigen is. Also the port cut outs are pretty large but maybe that's a preference thing. I don't imagine you'd be going wrong either way but price-wise I know which one I'd get ;)

Hard to believe its better than an s8

      1440 x 2960 pixels, 18.5:9 ratio (~570 ppi density) (S8)
      12 MP, f/1.7, 26mm (wide), 1/2.55", 1.4µm, OIS, dual pixel PDAF

      1080 x 2280 pixels, 19:9 ratio (~438 ppi density) (S10E)
      12 MP, f/1.5-2.4, 26mm (wide), 1/2.55", 1.4µm, Dual Pixel PDAF, OIS

      • +1

Significantly better. It's so smooth and fast. It's faster than my 3xl. The size and feel is fantastic and the screen didn't have curved edges!!!!!!!!!! Speakers are a huge step up and wide angle lens is really fun to use. Fingerprint reader is also so much better placed. All in all its a big step up.

        • -6

Minimal upgrades vs $$ but spec wise still worse than an S8 can the neggers have some input at least ?

          • +2

@solidussnake: What? Overall a much faster phone, better camera, smaller form factor, better speakers, better cpu, faster processing photos etc, 3 years of updates.

The p2xl is a better phone than the s8 and it's the same price. Perhaps if you are looking at older phones with limited support then get the p2xl?

Not sure why I got negged, I came from an s9, before that an s8.

Never only compare specs btw. And if you do, look at ram also.

      • You've only selected 2 of the many metrics that make a good phone. Additionally, those camera metrics don't mean much. It's like saying a 2.8ghz mobile processor will perform the same as a 2.8ghz desktop processor just because they run at the same frequency. Screen resolution also doesn't account for screen quality. In fact while you may not notice a difference between sharpness, the CPU will run more efficiently with less pixels to push.

    • You must have massive hands :p

I haven't held an s10 but my v30+ is FAR too large. It's not safe to hold when actually trying to do useful stuff one handed.

      • S10e. It's smaller than s10. It's about the same size as iPhone xs. It's much smaller than v30

    • How do you like camera compared to pixels?

      • Personally I find the pictures far more satisfying. I also love using the wide angle lens. Videos are significantly better, especially the audio. I have noticed that due to the lens aperture, you can get bokeh effects without using portrait mode, and they are real compared to the fake portrait pixels do. Also macro works well compared to pixel which can't do macro at all. I'm pretty picky, but I don't sit there comparing photos side by side. They look great to me, and I enjoy taking photos again.

  • Will warranty work outside of AU like say Europe and for how long?

    • I would assume not since it's a grey import

      • What makes you think it's a grey import?

Ships from and sold by Amazon AU.

        • Ahhh my bad. Made an assumption based of the dual sims feature

  • +5

Hot tip for all S10 users, change your animation from 1x to 0.5x and your phone will be even MORE faster

    https://www.howtogeek.com/175033/how-to-speed-up-any-android…

  • This or Huawei mate 20 (non pro)?

    • This since its current gen, the Mate 20 is last gen

      • +1

The choice is more straight forward if it is mate 20 vs P30. The P30 would win by a slim margin because of the improved camera and water resistance rating (other specs are mostly identical).

But is not as straight forward comparing with S10e.. The Mate 20 has a telephoto and wide angle lenses, which would make it on par with the S10.

        • +1

This is s10e not S10. Neither of the mate phones are as small as the s10e. Can't compare at all.

  • +5

Jb parramatta refused to price match due to it being a grey import. The sale person didnt even bother reading to Australian warranty or services by amazon au

    • +1

Useless employee. Go to another store and file a complaint.

    • +1

I think they're getting stricter with price matching. Most staff have been saying they can only price match physical stores. Better off going to Officeworks.

      • They run online website themselves

    • JB Airport West would have price matched the Note 9 deal from Amazon if I decided to go through with it.

Just depends who you speak to

    • No surprise. Everytime I have attempted to price match a product at JB, I keep getting told that it will be below cost.

  • When will it be $700 ?

  • +2

Office Works price matched for me.

    • What did you pay? Interested in upgrading my partners S6 to a 10e and if we can get it sub $800 from OW we'll do that!

      • +1

Around $806 as it included the 5% price beat as well.

        • +1

Isn't it better if you buy through Amazon with 6% shopback cashback? Around $798.06 after cashback? Unless I supposed the $7 difference is good for the brick and mortar retail experience and drop in warranty claim I supposed.

          • +4

@cloudie9: I felt more secure in buying from OW than buying from Amazon. Having had bad experiences with them in the past and the hassle of joining another cashback group wasn't worth the bother (I've also had bad experiences with cashback places, where they don't live up to the cash back claim). Plus I have the phone in my hands already. If you can be bothered to go through all of that to save a little bit more then feel free to do so.

Also I needed to go to OW today to get some other things. All in all it worked out to be good for me

          • @cloudie9: Isn't it 6% of the ex GST price?

  • +1

    Bring on digital Sims already

    • +1

Agreed. Hopefully that doesn't stop microSD inclusion. I like being able to transfer my music from device to device.

  • +1

OW priced matched for me. Thanks OP

    • What did you pay?

  • are we still eligible to claim galaxy earbuds after buying from amazon.

    • Claim how?

There was a claim available for preorders of the S10/S10+. This is neither a preorder, nor one of those phones… So is there a new promotion I haven't seen?

      • Hi Martin.. sorry. i though we can claim free earbuds with every new samsung galaxy s10. Just had a chat with them and they said promotion is over for Australia. :(

  • 12% cashback on Amazon today I noticed
    not sure for how long

    • 6% for mobile phones?

      • Yes, but that's Applicable for shopback though. Cashrewards is only measly 3.5%…

      • yep looks like 6% only
I only saw 12% as I bought something else

  • OW will price match plus 5% off on this deal.

    • It’s called price beat

      • Thanks for the correction.

  • I'm very tempted. Don't have a case or cover, so might wait for the Amazon delivery.

OW price beat doesn't quite beat cashback price of shopback.

    • I guess if you want it now with instant saving from retail brick and mortar shop and possibly more convenient warranty process or save extra $7 from ShopBack and have to wait a bit to get Cashback and deal with posting the phone back to amazon if any issue with phone

      • At OW, checking on price beat.

        • How did you go?
