  • Much better value than the $10 (+Shipping) SD set top boxes offered by another dealer a few weeks ago.

yeah… shame there are only 98 in stock… how many pensioners are there?

  • +4

yep - get them before they get sold to the government for $350 !!
(PS - standard markup for goods sold to government)

    • +2

The $350/unit cost includes installation, ongoing support and management of the entire rollout.

      • haha red/white/yellow wire goes into the red/white/yellow socket. Power plug goes into the power point. Put it into AV1 and there you go, semi clear HDTV.

you can always just read the manual.

        • +2

What is a socket?!?! what is a wire?!?!? Power plug??

It may seem easy for us younguns, but trust me, it's not for the elderly.

my parents TV doesn't have AV1, so, diamondtouch1, what do you recommend they do with a STB ?

        • +1

It is not always clear cut. I recently bought a Strong HD STB, and it was awful. No Ch7 , Ch10 and fuzzy/glitchy Ch9. I can only imagine the head scratching the elderly would have with it. It's much better than possibly telephone support which would take forever. Ongoing support will indeed be to ensure that the elderly know how the STB works and follow ups to ensure the STB it is indeed working as it should be.

        • ahh true, if only all the elderly had easily accessible Gen Y people around.

Battler - Surely your Parents TV have an input of some sort, RCA, S-Video, SCART etc. If there is no direct corresponding plug to plug it into (eg S video input on TV, to S Video output on the Set Top box), grab a converter as theres plenty around.

If for some reason your parents TV has no input, then, I think its time to get a new TV :/

ongoing support = repeatedly training retirees with memory loss how to use more than one remote

are you Julia Gillard trying to defend another costly policy failure?

        • +1

The way I see politics is that Labor has good policy ideas but are terrible at cost management. The Coalition has little to no good policy ideas, but are better at cost management. Pretty opposite to one another. If only they could work together to get the best of both.

On a side note, i think this STB program for the elderly is a good idea, though since im not knowledgeable enough, I don't know if this cost should be expected for the industry. The main cost is of course the labour cost of calling someone out. The trade-off compared to doing it yourself i guess is that it is more hassle free for the elderly this way. I only hope that the government has a central database of approved installers (with security checks), don't want STBs exploding and causing house fires, or unaccredited or untrusted strangers entering homes.

An interesting review here for potential purchasers of these:

I presume these are the same as this ebay listing http://www.ebay.com.au/itm/Digitel-HD3000-High-Definition-Se… ?

Why the difference in delivery cost?

    • edit : It says 30 day DOA warranty, and 12 months warranty (unless specified otherwise).

Is that 30 days or 12 months for warranty?

      • +1

No, that's 30 day DOA warranty! From the listing:

        • All purchased products are supplied with a 12 month back to base repair warranty unless otherwise specified, all warranty repairs are performed by the manufacturer and will require an RA (Return Authority) for approval to be repaired. In the unlikely event that your product warranty needs to be exercised please contact 1300 889 803 for more information and instructions*
        • This warranty applies for 12 months from the purchase invoice date provided with your product*

it should cost $5 MORE on ebay thanks to ebay/paypal fees, not the other way around!

  • My point exactly morpheu, it would cost MORE to sell on ebay.

    • Hmm that is indeed interesting. Therefore this is technically not a bargain, as exactly the same thing can be found but $5 (or 14%) cheaper on eBay. Though their eBay store doesn't show the ABN i think. Well not that I could find easily.

  • And for those not understanding the Government scheme - a friend has just completed a weeks training with Skybridge and he's now in rural Victoria, living in the back of his ute, doing installations.

There are a limited number of licensed installers living away from home for months at a time, (He's from Hobart and will shortly be working in Cape York!), you can't expect people to go these lengths without getting a fair wage.

  • But couldn't Harvey Norman do it install for 100 bucks though ?

    • +1

I'm sure that wouldn't include followup support. It's remarkable that Harvey would use the phrase of doing things cheaper, considering his business seems to like operating on fat margins. And yet he's uncomfortable that others can sell cheaper than he can.

    • The government's invited HN to bid for the contracts…if they really could do everything the government needs done at $100 they would bid at $125 and make a nice profit.
