Would it be worthwhile getting one of these and then using the iPhone XR upgrade offer?

    • -1

      no

    • iPhone 7 -> iPhone XR via trade-in is from $949 and from $1349 for the XS
so no it's not worth it
      www.apple.com/au/trade-in/

  • Got the 128gb for $459. I’ve been looking on gumtree but this looks like a better deal with 3 months warranty. Thanks op

    • I can't help but feel like the brand new iPhone 7 from Myer, for a couple hundred more, would have been (for me) better value, just for the fact that it was new.

I'm just curious about these refurbished iPhones I see all around the place - who refurbishes them? Apple? Authorised representatives? And how do you know who actually refurbished them?

Refurbished doesn't mean anything. Rubbed with cloth = refurbished.

        • That's what I was afraid of. Thanks Bob.

Not implying anything about this offer, OP. Just curious.

@BooYa: I have purchased numerous iPhone’s from MyDeal various refurbishers including Brand Sales. Over two years 2xIPhone 5c, iPhone 6, iphone SE & iphone 7 for my family. Not had a bad one yet. The physical appearance have been excellent. The battery conditions usually good, last one the iphone 7 was 95% the iphone SE was 96%.

            • @paul2perth: Thanks. So it depends on who refurbishes them.

Ideally, Apple would do it, and include a new battery (but then my guess is that it'd cost almost as much as a new one).

Ps. Good to know these guys do a decent job though, and have people vouch for them.

@BooYa: The battery isn’t replaced, but as have seen they tend to be in good condition. There is nothing to say that these are Apple refurbished, I think they probably aren’t.
You make the decision whether it is worth the risk over buying brand new. So far I have saved hundreds of dollars as a family who are happy not to have the latest tech.

                  @paul2perth: I completely understand mate.

If you have had a good experience once, and then again, and again, then it would make sense to stick with it if it's more economical (especially if you're in the position of having to supply not one person, but a whole family) :)

            • @paul2perth: Did they have scratches or marks noticeable like purchasing a second hand phone or were they immaculate?

              • @Gavman: The odd slight scratch on the edges/corners. Nothing on the screens noticed with any I bought.

For extra $40 or less with gift cards, you could get AU stock and 12 months warranty https://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/452964

      • Yes. But that was was a used one. These are 'refurbished'.

Having the choice though, I strongly prefer Aussie based retailer (online or otherwise) with local stock.

Especially for used or refurbished units, for full protection of Australian Consumer laws (if it ever came to claiming on the warranty, if something went wrong).

        • Yep some of these are international stock. My iPhone 6, SE & 7 were all Aussie stock. Not sure what refurbished benefits you over used. None of the iPhones I have bought have from MyDeal had 100% battery, usually 93-96% They just feel like used, but you have a chance to return if you are unhappy, plus 3 or 6 months warranty.

    • Buying refurbished from these guys is definitely less risky than buying from Gumtree. You have 7 days to return the phone and get a refund if you are unhappy. I have heard all too often of people getting duped with stolen and blocked handsets off Gumtree.

      • Yeah buying off gumtree I don't get anything without a receipt that matches the phone serial/imei. As you say, otherwise you're probably going to be buying a stolen phone!

If anyone’s interested, there’s no charger included.

Sure, you may have one lying around but factor the cost of one if you don’t.

    • FYI - The iPhone 7 I bought (Brand Sales) came with an aftermarket charger & cable. No headphone jack though.

  • Anyone bought a 'brand new' iPhone from eBay?
128GB on eBay priced similar to this deal.

  • Can you claim TRS with this seller?

  • does the $29 battery replacement scheme apply for this direct import phone?

  • bought this phone and have returned it today, scratches and dents everywhere, some very deep! Battery was 100% before bed and woke up to 61% on airplane mode!

  • Mine arrived with no scratches and battery life at 84% For the price I’m happy with it.
