Sherwood 10SW 10" Powered Active Subwoofer $200 Delivered @ Global Export Online eBay

50
PCLICK

Original PCLICK 20% off Selected Seller on eBay Deal Post

According to eBay item specifics (Model/MPN) this seems to be the 10SW (Teatro) model.
Notes: Has been cheaper before ($180 Delivered), but still cheaper than everywhere else.

10-inch woofer - 100W Peak power
(Watts RMS unlisted, my guess is 50-60w RMS)
Frequency response: 30-200hz

Cheap subwoofer option with advanced controls (level/cross-over/phase dials).
For those on a budget, or who want to spend a similar amount to what they paid for their soundbar/bookshelf’s.

Discontinued product. Only 1 Year manufacturers warranty according to Sherwood.
Lack of after sale support (manufacturer warranty/product support) means best you will get is a refund.
10-inch woofer powered by slightly under-powered amp.
This enclosure is big (not in a good way) 40x40x40cm, makes it harder to place.
Solid sounding subwoofer if you aren’t pushing it (source: forums(forums.whirlpool.net.au) .)

Crossed this off my list, too large a box, too large a driver, lack of after sale support.

  • Multiply watts peak by 0.707. comes to 70wrms

If the company is reputable. High end products like JL tend to under rate there products even though they push out much more with ease

    • +1

Yes Sherwood was at one stage a reputable HiFi brand (they did nothing fancy, just knew how to make proper speakers at a decent price range).
I would expect this product to perform well, except the current common subwoofer buyer usually expects ‘cinema’ or earth-rattling bass, which some makers (SVS, JL Audio etc) provide at a high cost, I expect this Sherwood will be more a ‘HiFi’ subwoofer than ‘Home Cinema’.

      • +1

Yup - there is a huge difference between a subwoofer created for music and a subwoofer created for cinema. It's important to know what you're buying!

        • I understand that im merely stating the facts, calculating RMS and how companies rate watts peak.

I didn't mention anything about home or car audio.

Next time I'll keep quiet and let the home cinema experts comment :)

Maybe your calculation for RMS is different from car audio or you can go by 50-60wrms calculation

  • Would this work with audioengine A5+'s?

    • Yes. The 10SW has all the advanced controls needed to properly cross-over / match phase with powered speakers.
It will work fine for adding low-end extension.

But keep in mind, this subwoofer only has sub-frequency (after cross-over) pass-through (for adding a second subwoofer).
So unless your powered speakers automatically cut their low frequency-response (when plugging something into the sub-output), they will continue to play the full-range even with the subwoofer connected and playing.

(In a nutshell, if your speakers continue to play full-range they will unable to get louder than they currently do. A subwoofer with a full-range pass-through [uncommon in this price range] will enable your speakers to take care of only the mid-to-higher frequencies, therefore play louder without distortion. Some people like to have this additional ability to play louder.)

      • How about the Voll A44s?

        • Yes the 10SW has line RCA & high-level inputs (for amp’s without subwoofer output).
And as mentioned in comment above, has advanced controls to properly cross-over & match phase (timing / position) with any speakers frequency-response.

  • If anyone is concerned about return-policy etc of eBay stores.
The same product (10SW) is available for $50 more on Amazon AU (which have a very good reputation on returns / replacements).
    Only 5 units available.

  • OP, can I hit you up about a secondhand set of speakers I am looking at for your opinion?

    • My opinion is that you should purchase brand-new. I am lacking experience in Hi-Fi and older systems.
You can just comment the make & model of what you are looking at, but personally I would purchase a brand-new set. Unless it is something barely used being listed for cheap on stereo.net.au.
