If you are in NSW, Vic or QLD, I recommend trying Genesis Fitness on a free 30 day pass.
30 days is great to work out:
- do you have time and interest to go to a gym and get benefit out of it
- do you like the gym near you
- is it close enough and open at good hours
- what do you really like or want from the gym
- can you use the equipment or classes at times you can visit
- do you like the people, facilities etc
- how long does it take them to get broken stuff fixed
:)
I tried it, and here's my assessment based on this, some comments on the web about Fitness First and comments by Choice magazine:
- I had to go to the Genesis Fitness club to get the free 30 day pass
the consultant offered me a one year or a 10 month package, without joining fees if I signed up on the spot and skipped the free 30 day pass
apart from that the consultant didn't really try to push it hard … he was fairly blase about it all really :P Possibly because I'd said at the start that I was checking out the gyms in my area, and so, wasn't committing to anything yet
I got a tour of the facilities without any hassles
I was not asked for credit card details etc and did not have to give any account details
there was no medical assessment or direction given with the 30 day trial. I played around with the equipment, and tried classes. Personally, I enjoy classes a lot. I think they would do well to give people a proper assessment so they enjoy the 30 day trial even more. I got an assessment later and found it very helpful and increased my enjoyment more when I knew what I was doing :)
at the end of the trial they contacted me and reminded me of the offer. I discussed with them other options, looking for more flexibility. There is a monthly package. There is also a student monthly package. Also, depending on the month you join, there may be a different special available.
if you are with Medibank Private, they have (or had) an offer where you could join up with Genesis Fitness, no joining fees, first month free too.
I ended up coming back to them a month later after trying other gyms and joined them. They hadn't heard of the Medibank Private offer, discussed it and came back with a counter offer, since I'd already had my 30 days free trial :) The counter was the same, but without the first month free.
I only got maybe 2-3 calls from them, checking if I had decided to join up, during the first week after the trial. After I said I definitely wanted to check out some more gyms, they left me in peace, which was good, as I heard some other gyms will ring you constantly, only stopping if you join them.
I was a bit disappointed they didn't tell me there is an intermediary who handles billing and wants $30 or so for a set up fee. But in the end, I decided I did enjoy the gym, was getting benefit out of it and signed up.
it's 5 months on now. I know why I wanted to join up, I am still enjoying it, I'm glad I checked it out thoroughly before hand …
some equipment at my Genesis Fitness has been broken but has been fixed either the next day or within a matter of days
I ended up joining, with a weekly payment plan, though I'm now leaning towards monthly or maybe the yearly.
My plan includes:
- free assessments (with the weights program being reworked) I think up to 1 a week … though I only go for a re-assessment every 2-3 months
- free towel loan each visit if I want
- free locker and shower use (though lockers use a $2 coin with the locking mechanism. Coin returned by lock when key is returned)
- access to all classes for free (you might want to confirm that at your branch)
Sadly, my branch doesn't have the pool, spa, sauna, squash, creche, cafe, etc. Facilities vary at different branches. I realized though, I'm happy without the pool so, hey, it's okay :)
So … yeah … if you can, I'd really recommend the 30 day trial as a great way to work out if a gym really is for you and if that branch of Genesis Fitness is for you.
Hoping it's of benefit to other people. :)
Oh yeah, if you do join up with Genesis Fitness and found the tip helpful, you could give them my name and I think they'll give me something in return :P Let me know if you want to … :)
Last thing: when you join up, they may mention giving you a backpack, drink bottle and towel if you give them the names and phone numbers of 5 people you know.
They will call the people on the list. Everyone I know was called once or twice, almost as soon as I gave the list to the Genesis Fitness people, to ask them if they would be interested in a 2 week free trial.
To their credit, they only called once or twice. But I thought you should know the people will quickly be contacted.
Also, the backpack is okay-ish, the drink bottle very basic and the towel left red fibres on me when I tried drying myself with it :P (So I'm now using the loan towels from them instead :) )
Oh, another thing … personal assessment is not personal training.
With personal assessment, the personal trainer looked through my program, spoke with me about what I wanted to achieve, how I was going etc, then gave me new exercises to do and checked I could do those exercises. Each session was about 30 - 60 minutes.
Personal training is generally extra and seems to be about either:
- a session where one is pushed to go further and harder with the exercises
- a session where one asks for help with techniques with things … maybe boxing, pilates, different equipment … etc
My package includes free personal assessment. Some packages also include free personal training. That's at Genesis Fitness. It's good to check with a gym, what is included as part of the package, and what will cost you more.
Genesis Fitness were nice and gave me a free personal training session for my birthday :) I'm still working out what I want to do with it :)
I thought I said too much on the internet but foundit, you take 1st prize :-)
Just be warned that some of the Genesis Gyms are only offering a 7 day trial. These seem to be the "good" area gyms :-(
:)
Hmm … maybe I should put it under a forum.
I'm probably just a lot happier with it than I expected to be, and all. Plus I was looking around for some tips etc back in January when I was interested in trying a gym … and I couldn't find the info here and all :)

oh, forgot to mention that Fitness First is notorious for their "pushy" sales people. You call that number and they took your contact details and from there, they will call you everyday until you joined or you changed your number.
