Another NAS drive on the way out, and these are back to their lowish price point again.
Bought one last time earlier in the year and it works perfectly fine for my NAS usage (was a WD80EMAZ)

        It must depend on which manufacturing batch it came from whether it's a WD White or that Datacentre drive. They probably temporarily ran out of WD White drives and made a batch with Datacentre drives in it.

        So i would that that this most likely will come with a WD White 8TB hard drive in the enclosure. The majority do say that it's a WD White.

          Just to confirm that my order from a month ago was a WD80EMAZ-00WJTA0, which apparently is a white label helium.

          I haven't gotten around to opening it up or anything yet. I'm trying to decide what to do with it. I don't have a spare power adapter to use it as an external, but apparently it would also have the 3.3V issue with my PSU. Can't win with this thing.

            @mekktor: That model is a non helium drive. No helium at all. It's just an air drive and apparently runs hotter than the helium model.

              @hollykryten: Do you have any source on that? Because everywhere I've seen, people are saying it's helium. For example, here and here (with photo).

              Not that it really matters for how I'm using it. It would just be good to know one way or the other.

                  @hollykryten: Thanks for the clarification. Honestly, most of this stuff is lost on me. I know some people are really concerned with which drive they get but I just needed some extra space at short notice. Maybe I lucked out and took one of the good drives from someone who wanted it? Because at the end of the day it's just luck of the draw, right?

            @mekktor: If you have a molex power plug from the PSU then you can use a molex to SATA power adaptor which bypasses the 3.3V pin issue. And the drive will run off that. That's how the hard drive can be used internally.

                @mekktor: Personally. I would rather use a molex to SATA power adaptor if using internally in a desktop PC and there's a spare molex. You should only have to use the tape method if using it in a NAS and it doesn't work in it without it.

        I think that the latest model one's are rebranded HGST Ultrastar drives, not Datacentre drives. aka WD White non Helium drives. You would have to get a really new batch to get one of those.

    Still unsure whether I should shuck it to put it into my pc or just keep it external for warranty etc.

    Just using it as archive for photos which are also on google photos.
    Plan is to get another one down the track to have an off-site copy.

                    @marcozmitch: Set up Camelcamelcamel to monitor the drive you linked on Amazon. Call Officeworks as soon as you get the email, ask them to confirm the pricematch, and hold the drives for you. Drive down and collect. Repeat at multiple stores if you need.

                    They go sub 200 occasionally, 240 is common. Officeworks offers a 5% price-beat on top of this.

                    The drives are easy to shuck and require no modification. I do not believe they can be shucked without breaking the enclosure, however.

      You use it for storing stuff… you basically either need more storage space, or you don't.

      Most people who buy these have large amounts of media to store - photos, videos, movies etc. If you have a library of UHD Bluray rips , they are easily over 50GB, sometimes over 80GB each - so you'll fill up 8TB fairly easily.

          No, just someone who has personal experiences and listens to the overwhelming common experiences of others online over the last 10 years or so.

          Ever wonder why Seagate are continually on special, whereas WD rarely gets reduced? It’s the only way to get people to say “I’ll give Seagate another go, maybe they’ve changed since my last failed drive”.

    I got 3 of those last time they were selling them for the same price. All 3 are Helium filled, "White label Red Drives". They required a "tape mod" to work with my Power supply. It took less than 5min per drive to take it out and tape a pin. You could also use a molex to SATA adapter if you can't be bothered to put a free piece of sticky tape.
    DO NOT FORGET TO DO A FULL DISK SCAN FOR ERRORS PRIOR TO SHUCKING IT!!!
    This is required in case there are errors in which case you return it immediately to Amazon.

    I'm using the three drives on my FreeNAS to store an entire Linux ISO collection. 🙂

      Personally I don't like to do full disk scans with external drives, they get insanely hot.

      I just do some short tests and then shuck it and hope for the best.

    Literally just got one of these delivered to me @ $218 shipped that I ordered just under two weeks ago.

    Mine was a EMAZ drive, which appears to be a "white label" Red drive, same specs afaik? I can obtain the specific model number tomorrow if anyone wants it. I'm using mine to backup my RAID array. So I just needed a simple basic drive which works.

    The one thing to consider if you aren't shucking this drive; the power adapter that comes with this is US only, you will either need to repurpose an old WD External HDD power cable (like I did) or a travel adapter.

    It's a regular plug that needs 5v and 1.5a, my 640GB Green drive had the same plug - I haven't used this in years.

          Is that legal according to Australian electircal safety standards to twist the two pins from a USA power plug and put it into a power point?. What if your home insurer finds out about it was the cause of a fire.

    Yep, 10tb deal now way better value…

    My order hadn't even shipped so cancelled the order for my own deal post and grabbed the better value 10tb option :)
