Is this an Android One device? With Android One are we still reliant on the manufacturer providing us updates or does it come straight from Google?

    • I thought the whole point of Android one was that it came directly from google.
Don't think this device is Android one tho..

      • In the previous post for this phone there was quite a lot of suggestion that at least one of the models was Android One

      • +11

Nope, Android One meant they are as close to Google version of Android as possible so the manufacturer only need to do minimum amount of work to make update available. Google provide update to all manufacturers including non Android One, but the complexity of patching it to their own skins meant some manufacturers just say **** it.

Android One is meant as binding of sort, where manufacturers in the program are obliged to do fast update (minimal amount of work really) at least 2 years for OS and 3 years for security patch. HOWEVER, the only one that been keeping up almost same time with Google Pixel update is the Essential Phone. Almost every other Android One devices are 20 days+ later than the Pixel and Essential Phone.

        • +10

I know what you are saying but 20 days behind is still leagues ahead of most other manufacturers

          • @hen dawg: Only in regards to security patch. For OS update it's a lot longer. E.g Nokia's phone many of the budget ranges are only getting Pie update now, 6 months later.

          • +1

@hen dawg: Like LG and their "software upgrade centre". Yet to see the fruit of that tree.

          • +1

@Diji1: Wow, you have absolutely no idea what you're talking about

        • What I am getting at is how reliable will foxconn/Sharp be at getting us these updates? It means nothing if they dont deliver, and i dont know of their track record.

Also was there any conclusion to if this phone is actually Android One?

          • +1

@Jackson: Whenever you buy a phone, don't count on it being updated. It's really up to the manufacturer. I found out the hard way. Years ago, my first Android phones was promised an update. I bought it based on that assumption. The update never came.

Any update is a bonus. Phone makers are not obliged to give us updates.

If you're into flashing, get a phone that's popular enough to have lots of ROMs available. Don't rely on phone makers.

      • +1

@Jonski Android one comes from manufacturers
Pixel phones are the ONLY ones that get it from google

    • +4

it’s a combination ….. with android one, google introduced project treble, hardware manufacturer develops drivers to a hardware abstraction layer, google does software above that, manufacturer can add their own extra software, but. is it’s easier for them to compile code……security patches are from google.

aim is to be able to provide android updates beyond the typical 2 years as google are trying to catch up to apple for updates support periods.

      • +3

manufacturer can add their own extra software

No they specifically cannot do that.

aim is to be able to provide android updates beyond the typical 2 years

They specifcally state the aim is to have updates for 2 years. Not more than that.

    • Android One device info is answered in the original offer post:
      https://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/448193

      • +1

No disprespect to the OP but that post is confusing as. We have to first work out if its Android One or not, and then work out if Sharp/Foxconn are up to the task of actually performing their obligations under the program, and then see if the "Global Version" is actually global or if they expect the global customers to fly to korea for their OTA update? We also need to know if it's indeed Android One why is it still on v8.0? If you worked out the answers to all those question it would be great to know cos I tried and couldnt :)

        • Yes, I agree that original post was very confusing. There is a Korean Variant with Android One with the same model number FS8032. However, the back of that phone has the Android One logo instead of Sharp one as shown in this AliExress store. Also there are screenshots of the phone in the AliExpress store running a skin (Smile UX).

          • +2

@kitsumon: This phone appears to be shipping with Android 8.0, and am assuming it will have the Sharp "Smile UX" skin.
The Korean variant has the same FS8032 model but has AndroidOne branding on the packaging, as well as Android 8.1 and no Band 28.

            TL;DR
All vendor photos show Android 8.0 in screenshots and no AndroidOne branding on the package photos.
Assume it will arrive with Android 8.0 and Smile UX skin.
Assume flashing a Korean ROM may brick the handset and/or lose B28.

sigh, the Aussie dollar has been quite pathetic lately. missing the days when it is par with the USD:)

    • +9

That's what happens when you suck money out of every single household and every single business like the privatised electricity and privatised telco industry has done.

Most of that money leaves the country and what doesn't is largely not spent in Australia creating economic activity, it is used for wealth creation rather than consumption.

Naturally people keep voting for the two parties that created this situation even as their own wealth is pissed away.

      • Not necessarily the case. Demand for the currency drives it up. People keep on sending it offshore to have it never come back in a factor. I sent some of mine offshore in anticipation of the AUD devaluing and better investment options than Australia. The Australian sharemarket is woeful. The only people who are still investing in it is people forced to as part of defaults in their super fund or pensioners trying to suck up all the franking credits.

        • +1

Only people who are still investing is inside traders and idiots who feed them.

The SD630 is quite power efficient, my S2 easily lasted a day and longer than a new galaxy S10.

  • Shopback currently 5% discount too?

  • The price comes up as $210.84 when I try this with all the coupons

    • +1

      Did you try US$

      • No I did not - I am paying with AUD.
I can confirm the price checks out to USD 147.89 when changing the currency in Aliexpress to USD.

  • What's the camera like on this? Is this or UMIDIGI F1 better?

    • camera is a combination of hardware and software, and we often see improvements after a software upgrade, so challenge with this phone software updates so that you can make the most of it over it’s expected life span.

The review on https://www.notebookcheck.net/Sharp-Aquos-D10-Smartphone-Rev… has a comparison of the Sharp D10 (I think same as the S3 but just a smaller battery) with OnePlus 5T, Apple XS Max, and a Sony A77.
You can look through 3 scenes and compare the detail. e.g. scene 3 is low light and you can check the text at the bottom of the print, shows Sharp not as good at low light. Other scenes it seems to do ok, maybe a bit too much sharpening.

        Brand name checks out

    • I'd recommend getting a Redmi note 7 if possible

      • Band 28?

  • Sideloading gcam api makes the camera any good? Sensor chip big?

  • Hey guys does this Global version ship with Play Store access and all the usual Google apps installed ready to go in AU?

    • -6

The first two words in the title are "Global Version"

      • +7

Yes I can read very well thank you thank you. You might even note I included that in my question. Please try to be helpful next time by RTFQ and answering it instead of just being a smart ar$e.

        • Sorry my bad! Wasnt meant to be rude :) was truly confused because I thought that was assumed by the fact its global version, or is that not the case? I.e. do they make global version phones without these apps? I cant remember seeing one in at least a few years.

BTW here is your answer: https://www.ozbargain.com.au/comment/7124175/redir (yes it does)

  • +2

Thanks Jackson. The reason I asked was that the last time I bought a Xiaomi "Global Version" Redmi Notes from AliExpress, - three actually, including one for my wife and an elderly friend, they had to be rooted to install Play Store in order to make them user friendly. It was a PITA. As these Sharps look to be a pretty good phone from a brand for a great price, I'm seriously interested as long as I don't have to go through that rigamarole. Again, thanks for your subsequent answer and help. Muchly appreciated.

    • Hi odal,
I am one of the unfortunate buyer who got sucked into a aquos 2 which auto updated to chinese rom. Can you give more information on the steps needed to install the global ROM?
      Cheers

      • I think "odal" had to sort out three Xiaomi's, not the Sharp Aquos S2 ( I was lucky to not auto OTA update mt S2 ).

I recommend reading through earlier posts on the S2 for help.

    Headphone Jack: X

Shame because with a headphone jack this would be a real budget superstar. fair to say those rocking cheaper phones are probably less likely to be rocking the expensive BT headphones that you need to make a jackless phone bearable.

    • Doesn't the description say that there is a 3.5mm jack?

      • 3.5mm dongle which is show in the images.

        • yep, saw an openbox review on Youtube and they have the type-c to 3.5mm adaptor.

          • @bb_hunter: yeah also GSM arena has it listed with a headphone jack.. misleading

  • Does Ali Express not charge GST anymore?

    • +2

      Included in price in title

      • I see, what threw me off is I'm seeing the phone as 199 AUD, which would be 218 with the discount. But I believe you switched to US and that gives us the title price.

Awesome catch buddy, thanks for sharing!!

  • Best value phablet ever?!

  • +2

Geat, thank OP! Don't forget cash rewards 4% atm for $7.5 extra.

  • +2

Aliexpress is out of stock and I just check Banggood price is US$140 or AUD$200. Don't even need the code.
    Don't forget Cashreward 3.5%

    Plus 10% GST

    • Damn it, I was ordering 2 units last night on Banggood and completely forgotten about cashrewards of 3.5%. $14 down the drain.

  • Banggood price now US$138 + US$2.30 freight (+ GST.)

    • This deal just gets better and better everyday. I see Pocophone is on sale at Tobydeals for around $360 delivered so tempting. But pocophone don't have band 28.

      • nor NFC on Poco either.

        • +1

yeah, I can live without NFC.
Not sure if band 28 is critical on the Telstra network. I am with Telstra.

          • +2

@he88388: According to OzTowers, Band 28 is on 5041 of the 19708 towers (the 2G are no longer used)
            around 26% of Telstra's network - so, more than a quarter of Telstra's towers use B28 …
If you just look at 4G access, 5041 of the 10519 towers (48%) are Band28.

In other words, if you are on Telstra's 4G network without B28, your connection is limited to 52% of their 4G network access resources.
