Free Speed Boost for Existing Telstra Cable Customers (In NBN HFC Areas)

1970

Telstra has given a free speed boost to any existing or new Telstra cable customers.

I've gone from 55Mbps/5Mbps to 115Mbps/5Mbps. You may need to power cycle your modem for it to reflect.

Reports are stating that this Free Speed Upgrade may only apply to customers who are

  • Living in areas with NBN HFC rolled out / in construction
  • Living in areas with NBN but are unable to be migrated from Cable to HFC NBN due to technical limitations

  • Re-contracted in February to get a Gen 2 modem thingy and they changed me over to free speedboost then. First offer they gave was I pay for the Gen 2 and keep same price as before… pointed out I could leave an come back as a new customer and second offer was free Gen2 and free speedboost…

Anyone in WA had this work?

  • April Fools Joke, or serious???

    • +3

From 1 April 2019 we stopped charging Cable customers for Standard Plus Speed Boosts. Due to the HFC Migration Experience Intercept they will now receive this for $0 ongoing.
•Automatically added on for all Cable customers
•Customers previously paying for “Premium” Speed Boost will now see Standard Speed on their bill

      • hi, this may be an explanation for my recent dilemma. My service in I think January was speed boosted cable for an additional $20 a month. the following month the bill was $20 less and the bill changed from saying i had the speed boost to not having it. HOWEVER now the speed is significantly lower than it ever was. About half of what it was, about 105 mbps to 45-55 mbps.
i never contacted telstra to change the service

      • So will there be a new premium speed that I can get on top of this?

      • Does that include SA? I've been been on premium speed boost for a while. Read some comments saying SA might not get this with the other states…

        • I'm in sa and have not had any change in speed. 4/1.

          • @TeamSAXON: I just spoke with Telstra online chat and they have discounted the bill so that speed boost is now free instead of $20. You should check with them too. If you haven't got the discount or upgraded speed (you need to unplug the modem from the wall for about a minute or so to reset it)

            • @Whisper Quiet: I spoke to them and they said because our contract expired long ago we aren't eligible. Have to renew the contract (no way in hell!!)

              • @TeamSAXON: I don't know what's going on but no customer will be paying for speed boost is what I got told. I'm not on a contract. I've got the casual month by month option, so if I was you I'd call again and speak to someone else

      • •Customers previously paying for “Premium” Speed Boost will now see Standard Speed on their bill

Oh hell yes! I hope this applies to WA customers too.

    • +2

Apparently real. Just had a chat with them and got speed boost charge deducted from my bill.

  • Another April Fools deal? The HFC delay was last year.

  • I'm still getting 55Mbit. On my account portal, the plan still says "standard speed cable". Does the plan name change if they give me the free speed boost?

    • Don't think so, mine is still showing standard speed cable as well

      • Ok. Well when my wife is finished watching her youtube playlist, I'll turn off the modem for a few minutes and back on again to try to sync up with a higher speed. Thanks!

        • Ok, its 115 now after a powercycle. Thanks!

  • +1

FWIW, there was an increase around this time last year as well, which definitely wasn't an April Fools prank: https://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/373668

Look forward to getting home tonight to see if this one is real.

Just power cycled and jumped from 55Mbps to 113Mbps! Thanks OP!

  • +1

Telstra should offer faster speeds than 100mbps. I’ve had 100mbps since 2010

    • +1

      Why would they?

It cost money to deploy faster speeds on a network they are dismantling soon.

      • Telstra isn't dismantling the HFC network. They sold it to NBNCo and Foxtel are switching to Satellite. Furthermore, Telstra performed the QAM256 & Docsis 3.1 upgrade.

        • They are dismantling their network. They will at some point be disconnecting their CMTS.

As for your comments regarding QAM256 and DOCSIS 3.1, that has nothing to do with Telstra. Those functions are performed by the NBN CMTS, and is independent from any work done on the actual cable plant.

(p.s. Telstra Cable runs at QAM256 even though it is DOCSIS 3.0, and most NBN areas are still DOCSIS 3.0).

    • Lucky.. We've had 5mb/sfor 15 years

    • You should be so happy with that though. We barely get 5.

  • jumped from 55mbps to 67 :(
could just be busy right now or the cables just suck. hopefully it’ll be better later!

  • lol at upload speed

    • +1

It’s good for uploading documents to Centrelink much more quicker ;)

  • Thanks OP. Ordered.

    Went from 55Mbps to 115Mbps

    • +1

When you say ordered, do you mean you called them up for it or was there an activate button?

      • +3

Lol nah I just restarted my modem.

  • Tried to get free speed boost for NBN HFC but they wouldn't budge. Has to be an extra $30 on top..

    • Yes it makes it a hard sell for NBN if it also comes with a $30 price increase to get back to 100mbit downloads… Mmmmm

  • 110mbps here in Redland City. w00t

    • I remember when it was Redland Shire.

  • Mine has had a negative increase - was 45 to 50, now 8 to 10. Well done Telstra.

    • How's this even possible?

    • Me too, went from 33 down to 12!

  • Telstra suck. fk them, i signed up for a month-to-month deal to cancel at any month i wanted to, asked them about cancelling and they wanted me to pay $120 to cancel it because apparently i was on a contract until 2020. scumbags.

    • I'm sure you can hold them accountable if that's true.

    • This sounds like a remarkably simple situation to remedy if you indeed were on a month to month plan.

    • I understand this, we signed up to Telstra Cable in 2016 in a Telstra store asking for no contract for higher initial outlay costs. Then found out they'd put us on a 24 month contract.. We didn't need to break the contract in that time which was good, but they did upgrade us to the highest tier plan for no extra cost as compensation.

Now on Aussie Broadband NBN and having a good experience so far. Yay to no contracts!

  • Cycled my modem and I'm now getting between 60-80mbps down, 5 up. Not 115, but better than I was getting.

  • Waiting for the deal that connects my NBN on the date scheduled instead of continually pushing it back for months/years…

  • Got the boost in St Kilda, while I am going to leave the country.

  • I cannot tell if this is an April Fools gag or real?

    • +1

Same here, I unplug my modem from the power several times, no change

      • I already have the speedboost so I don't know what is expect.

  • Awesome, I recently lost my speed boost by downgrading to the cheapest cable plan. Now I’m back to 100/5 (was 50/5 this morning)! Thanks OP!

    • Hi bozbargain, I am considering downgrading as well. I signed up to the medium cable plan 2 years ago, used to be 200gb but mid contract I got converted to unlimited for the same cost. Now that I am out of contract and considering that I never use over 200gb, I should perhaps downgrade. The CIS attached to my account says that the lower plan is 200gb for $70pm but on their current website, the lower plan is 100gb for $70. Which one have they put you on when you downgraded your plan?

      • I was put on the 100GB for $69 but then got 500GB extra bonus (?) so ended up with 600GB/month. Also, managed to get a $10/month discount as I also have an old family&friends mobile service with them.

  • Fyi; $69 plan customers unable to apply a speed boost, is what telstra chat operator has told me after consulting with a supervisor. They tried but say this plan is incompatible…wth is the difference between a 69 and 79 plan technology wise..? Soubds like BS

    • That’s what I meant with my above comment. I lost the speed boost on the $69 plan (coming from a $79 plan) because it wouldn’t be compatible (and I believe this is correct, Telstra tried but simply couldn’t apply a speed boost to my account so I got a nice lump sum credit instead after lots of back and forth with a case officer) but after I rebooted my modem this morning, I’m on my ‘old’ speed boost speeds again. :-)

  • Velocity customers anyone?

    • Not sure, I'm Velocity and don't seem to have received an increase

      • What's your current speed? The last "free" upgrade never worked for me too. Am still on 30/5

        • 100/5 but I pay for the speed boost.

    • I doubt they'll upgrade Velocity for a while. The network is known to be quite congested, especially their network in Brisbane.

Of course, Telstra isn't spending the money they need to in order to upgrade their FTTP, because they are of course, Telstra.

  • +2

Just worked for me in WA - was 57M & now 115M after rebooting the modem.
    Thanks OP!

  • Lol I'm just changing over to NBN as bastards out of the blue starting charging me for the speed boost that was part of my deal for years so I told them to shove it. Moving over to auzzie bb

  • thanks!! - worked for me in Mcdowall QLD. now getting 115/5!

  • turned off and on my modem and went from 55mbps to 5 mbps, am i doing something wrong?

    • +1

That is probably your "smart" router got stuck on cellular backup. You can powercycle your router too.

  • +1

Just confirmed that this is not an April Fools joke.

I contacted Telstra via the online chat and they agreed to provide Speedboost at no charge (I have been paying $20/month for it). Happy days!

  • +1

On nbn paying $100 per month, speed boost should be included. Making us fork out another $30 for it is just a rort.

    • +1

Move to Aussie BB $99 a month 100mbit
There is even a deal.right now $20 off a month for 6 months

      • +1

That deal expired yesterday, but there was a comment in the last deal that someone called up and was able to get them to apply it. I’m sure there will be the same offer this month as they’ve run it 3 months in a row now (probably due to their network upgrade).

  • not working for me

    • Restart router and cable modem.

  • +1

    Thanks! mine increased to 110/5

  • +1

Thanks OP. Mine increased to 115/5.
No need to change to NBN anymore until the forceful cutoff date in 18 months

  • +1

Got the speed boost here in SA.
    Now have 110/5

  • +1

I've just got speed boost in S/E suburbs of VIC. Now showing 115/5.

Absolutely made up with this and quite happy if this lasts for the next few years as there is pressure to changeover to NBN as its now available in my area.

Having spoken with my neighbours who have made the switch there are lots of problems which fortunately I don't get with cable.

I'm going to hang on as long as possible…

  • Ok I had to reread the description again to understand:

    1. This offer is only for Telstra Cable customer (non nbn) in the ready to service nbn hfc area

    2. Again you cannot be a telstra nbn customer. Only telstra cable, and you simply need to restart your modem

  • +1

Wow, worked an absolute charm! Was on 50/5, now on 115/5, thanks heaps for the heads up OP!

  • Confirmed working here

  • I'm in a HFC area with NBN in a "build commenced" status and did not get the upgrade.

    • me too, but i chatted online with telstra and asked, at first they said yes you can for $30 p/mth
then i said it says $20 and also i saw a number of people were getting free speed boosts
a HFC area with NBN in a "build commenced" status, and was checking if i can get a speed boost at no charge?

after a while of waiting 1hr+ i got the upgrade,

also worth noting i do have a 149 p/mth phone plan through work so maybe being a 'loyal'
customer they threw me a bone

  • Semi-legit for me!
I moved from T HFC with Speedboost clocking ~112mbps to a T-HFC home with NBN rollover due mid year and apparently I lost Speedboost with the move (some BS about it not been offered for new connections due to NBN) ..
SpeedTest (IOS) clock 55 before reboot and now 80, 45, 74 on successive runs.
Google Mesh WIFI app tests daily around mid 50's now clocks low-mid 60's
(Above benching with another active YouTube stream.. add a couple)

    Keperra,QLD

    • Are you saying this speedboost applies to NBN as well?

      • My area has HFC aka Cable internet. It is scheduled to roll over to NBN this year using the same HFC last mile.. not sure if anything changes on the head end (DSLAM equiv).
Just ran the benchmarks again near midnight and getting up to 108/4.8, this seems to be consistent with reported experiences when others have had HFC move to NBN where speeds are solid pre-NBN but post it seems your competing for bandwidth …. I guess higher contention ratios?

        • … just checked my address, NBN build commenced and scheduled for next month. I am looking forward to the bump in upload!

  • Good work, OP.
    No, this isn't April Fools.
    Getting 90s on speedtest.net

  • +1

How do you "power cycle" the modem? I've switched it off for a few mins and even press the rest button. My speeds are the same. Nbn was expected this month. I'm on cable through telstra. Based on the info, I should be eligible

  • Can confirm this appears to have worked. My download speeds tonight are around 75Mbps (after I power cycled the modem).

  • actually, i think i've been given a dud…. it was 50/5 then 120/5, now 18/2…

  • Hi, so I don’t really understand what internet I have. My Telstra app says:

Home internet connect plus standard plus speed NBN HFC TECHNOLOGY type.

    I know I mostly get 45/50 Mbps.
Will I get this free boost?

    • Restart and find out.

    • You’re on NBN already

  • Just power cycled and jumped from 70Mbps to 104Mbps! Thanks OP!

  • +1

Hi guys. My speed first went up after the reboot from 55 to 86, but every other speed test result is under 40 now. Any suggestions

    • I had a similar experience (as above). Just did two tests at midnight and got 108 and 100 …
Might check if the higher bandwidth for us on reconnect was a fluke or exploitable.

  • Cheers OP restarted and went from 50 to 100 in 10 seconds flat :)

  • I seem to have received it but not in an NBN (HFC) area. We'll be getting FTTC…

Here's my speedtest results on the Windows Store app.

  • +1

Important! Make sure you update your Quality of Service or QoS in your router to reflect the higher speeds!

The amount of people who go 'I never got it' who end up going 'oh it wasn't telstra's fault it was slow because I have a QoS enabled' is quite funny. :)

    • ~114/5, Brisbane inner west

Edit: sorry meant to be in general thread, not a comment reply

  • hah telstra I got 4mbs and at best 6mbs and the worst customer service. signed up and cancelled within 2 months.
