So why is JB Hi Fi mentioned in the description?
i.e. dman801 1 hour 5 min ago www.jbhifionline.com.au new
So you know the specs of the drive and what it looks like I gues?
yea what is this?
that kid is not 12
This guy…
Which guy?
the commonwealth guy.
DOH!
What is OW ?
It is when someone smacks you..you go 'OW!', or maybe it also stands for Office Works.
Missing Objective (MO) spun around 180 degrees. So the exact opposite of what you're supped to be doing. In this case - work. AZIZ! LIGHT!
this guy speaks the truth,
to be released tomorrow :)
Deal not active yet, and not confirmed; this probably should be posted if/when it gets released tomorrow.
Could you put a 2TB drive inside the casing ?
Even if you could, why would you bother? It'd cost you $170 in total, and you could buy a 2TB complete for less than that.
Should this one be called WD My Book Studio?
just came from my local OW and can confirm that these are now selling for $69.
Hi there, where is your local OW.
Elizabeth st. Melb CBD.
I just got back from OW (Clarence St Sydney), bought this for $69.
I'm glad I missed out on the $82 Big W one last week.
WD My Book Elite 1Tb External Hard Drive

Of all places why would you upload an image to media file? haha. Try and image host, not a file host
can i take off the case for internal?
You sure can, why would you want to? Given that these are the Green drives.
Nothing wrong with a green drive.
But the main reason it'd be silly to open and get the drive out is that the drive itself is only worth about $55 to $60, and you destroy any warranty.
http://www.staticice.com.au/cgi-bin/search.cgi?q=western+dig…
Is there anything else that is cheap? I think OW is doing a stocktake.
Btw, it is a green drive inside those cases:
Designed to save power - Turns on and off with your computer. Enters idle mode when not in use. Utilizes a WD drive with power-saving WD GreenPower Technology and an EnergyStar compliant power supply.
Quick question. Is this one USB powered?
Its 3.5 inch drive so no.
Only 2.5 inch ones are.
no
no it is powered by the sun
Thanks for clearing this up tyler. I thought it was powered by a single hamster running on the wheel. Clearly I was way off.
Tyler's runs on soap.
mine uses a Hydrogen Fuel Cell
LOL
ozbargaines are playful today heh? I think it's Friday effect ..
Bit of humour doesn't hurt. As you said, it is Friday after all. :)
and not just ANY friday, friday the 13th!!
green drives almost always run at 5400rpm, why would you take this out of the case? you would want a 7200rpm or ssd for a desktop pc…
well depends, like i dond need my external hd to be portable as i got 2.5" so now i can take off its case and put into my pc. else it will just sit outside my pc running usb speed. so either i waste it or i just plug into my pc as internal atm.
You should be able to remove the HDD. There's some instructions here: http://www.instructables.com/id/Disassembling-a-Western-Digi…
It's what I intend doing when I get around to buying a NAS device.
Why bother? Just buy the bare drives, they are heaps cheaper than $69 each. Anyway, you'd want a bigger drive than 1TB in a NAS anyway…. I've just had to clear mine out (2x1TB) bacuase I ran out of space!
1TB is plenty for my needs. Don't even really need a NAS (not that that will stop me getting one!).
went to the Clarence St store and there were certainly a pile of these drives on the shelf.
however, i decided to get two of WD My Book Essential 1.5Tb for $89 each instead…
Is this compatible for both PC and Mac?
you need to reformat if using for Mac
Unless you enable NTFS writing on Snow Leopard or use an alternative NTFS driver like NTFS-3G.
DO NOT use either of these (NTFS or NTFS-3G) for writing NTFS disks on your mac. I did, and it randomly deleted files from my USB disk .
These drivers are not stable (which is presumably why writing to NTFS is not enabled on your mac by default).
You are MUCH better off reformatting your drive as HFS+ (if you only want to use it on your mac). Or if you want to use it on both your PC and mac, buy Paragon's NTFS driver ($20):
http://www.paragon-software.com/home/ntfs-mac/
(This product would not exist if the free mac ones were good enough. think about it.)
I've heard that some older My Books installed spyware along with the software that is included on the hard drive, and that it was mandatory to install the program to use the hard drive. They also made it very difficult to just format the drive.
Have the damn things changed since then??
It has software on the drive but it's not mandatory to install it. The drive works fine without the software and it's simple enough to format it.

Quick Install Guide
FYI, the Brisbane store next to King George Square has like 80 of these. They're out the back though, so you'll need to ask them to fetch you one.
Bought one of these from Morley WA Officeworks. They had heaps on the shelf and even more on a pallet.
Just bought two of these @OW Oxley QLD, There's a whole bunch near the counters where the laptops are
Just bought a 1.5tb my book essential for $89 at pakenham office works :)
Might drop in and have a look, sounds cheap… hope I don't get a red light, my trip might stretch out to a minute! :-)
Just got back from OW Doncaster. A whole stack of them at $69. Plenty to go around!
Anyone know will it work if I pop a 3TB drive in?
There are plenty at WA stores, eg Vic park and east Perth. However, the 1.5tb wd my book essential @$89 is better value.
good deal.
I have one curious question, how'd you know that OW are selling the last of Synnex's batch?
I am deciding between this two.
This one, or the $87 portable 1TB hdd http://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/44637?
Both are 1TB. I don't mind paying $18 extra for a portable one as both are 1TB, but is this generally a better drive than the portable one?
Good enough price but fair warning to anyone who buys the MyBook series from WD, you CANNOT uninstall the bundled WD "SmartWare" (read: CrapWare) software, which is precisely what turns a lot of people off certain external HDDs; the bundled bloatware.
See here for angry Amazon reviewers: http://www.amazon.com/Western-Digital-Essential-Desktop-Exte…
Not only that, but SmartWare basically acts like a virtual drive partition that mounts itself every time your MyBook is connected and appears as an extra drive entry under My Computer, starting a bunch of background processes along with it that are part of it's backup/security functionality (which is nowhere near as good as TrueCrypt/Acronis/Norton Ghost).
Even a reformat won't get rid of it as it's part of the enclosure's firmware.
The SmartWare backup/encryption utility also uses up around 1Gb of the drive's capacity too.
If you just want no-strings attached, add-on storage, for a slightly cheaper price; there are a bunch of external HDDs that come with no bundled junk:

The Samsung G3 Station is a beaut.
so how is ow related to jb hifi?
