Why do they still sell this

    • +4

My thoughts as well. It is frustrating to see Amazon Au flogging old models here and new models only being available on the US site.

How come we can't get the 4k fire stick?

    • +1

Get one on eBay $108 with PROUD promo - i've sideloaded Kayo Sports and Amazon Prime video & you can also sideload KODI etc

      • Hey dude, can you PM me with info on how to sideload kodi and the channels you use specifically?

        • +1

I've only done Kayo and Prime (Netflix 4K works out of the box) I haven't done KODI as i don't use it but you can find heaps of info on Whirlpool forum ;)

      • Does AU Prime Video work??

        • Yep - although not on the App that comes with the device - you have to sideload it… PM me if you need more info

        • Also no 4k content on the Prime app using this method. Correct me if I'm wrong urbancartel

      • Is youtube available ? It was removed a year or so ago and I'm not sure it they restored it.

        • Not sure - although I think you could easily add the APK… might give it a try when I get a chance

          • @urbancartel: Thanks. I was going to buy the latest model but held off when I read older reports that youtube was pulled. If youtube can be made to work, then it's back into consideration :)

            • @redcreek200: you can sideload youtube and any app you want from downloader app and file linked app. you can even root it if you want lot of articles on XDA and web :)

its a great device, i have 2nd Gen firestick from overseas.

You had to side load Amazon prime onto an Amazon fire stick?

        • Yeah basically as it's designed for US market the native App won't play Amazon Prime AU so you have to add a new APK that will play your Amazon Prime AU subscription ;)

          • @urbancartel: Does it update or do you have to keep replacing it

            • @asa79: I've only had one for about a week - I don't think it would require updates but I'm not 100%

          • @urbancartel: Does the US app work too?

            • +1

@skywalka: I've read that it can be done but you need to go down the VPN route (I guess the way that people access US Netflix etc) haven't done it personally

    • OR frankly the fire stick with Alexa voice remote built in. Maybe the price is reduced because they are clearing stock? Never know….

I for one just use my Xbox to play prime video…. and by Prime video I pretty much mean (after having a Sharknado-thon) the Grand Tour, although I am hoping that "Good Omens" is as good as the book….

      • The Widow is pretty good too

Junk that they can't sell in the US trying to offload here. Don't buy this, all you're doing is affirming their sentinemt that we are a giant tip. It's insulting that we don't get at least the 4K Fire TV Stick let alone the other Fire TV devices.

    • These were made for outside us regions that didn't have echo support at the time

      • +1

This model used to be sold in the US. Now obsolete there :)

  • +1

Basic is overpriced for what it is

  • Can u install other apk on this?

    • yes

  • +1

Why would you buy this or even newer one? Mibox 2 so much better and cheaper. We have 3 in my house

    • +1

This or other similar streaming sticks (roku) are far more compact.

    • why did you vote for this deal if you think its useless?

      • Deal or not shouldn’t be based on the product itself. Is it a good deal? Yep. Is it a crap product? Yep.

For a little bit more you can get the 4K version from Newegg
    https://www.newegg.com/global/au-en/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16815815007&Description=fire%20stick&cm_re=fire_stick--15-815-007--Product
I paid about $73AUD a few days ago.

    • How does it compare to say the Mi box

      • Cant really answer that, dont have a Mi Box and still waiting for it to be delivered , its coming from US.

    • does the 4k one work well in Australia ?

    • Thanks! I'm getting $72.30 AUD delivered on Newegg.

Might be a much more tempting deal than the basic edition for many people.

  • I'm gonna wait till they sell the 4k stick down under. The basic one is too laggy.

  • Yeah this is a dumbed down version of a proper one. I have a 2nd Gen from overseas (not 4K) for a year now. You can do youtube through a browser but not directly as an app (kinda of a pain, but doable), and yes there is an easy web page on how to load kodi, which is nice if you are into kodi.

I say wait for a proper version though.

  • What is a similarly priced option for a bedroom TV? I've got an Apple TV for the main TV, but am keen on a cheap option to let me watch Netflix on the bedroom TV.

All the above comments are saying how rubbish it is, but the other options provided are an extra 50-100% of the price. It looks like the same Fire Stick from Amazon US comes to AU$73-ish?

    • Vodafone TV at $72

  • Speaking of which, any other to stream prime video to my home theatre projector, without buying firestick. Got a Minix Android box already. The only way I found possible is to use cast screen from chrome browser/

    • can't you sideload the amazon apk onto your Android box?

      • I can, but still can't play prime last I remember?

        • I've got Amazon sideloaded on my Mi box and it works fine.
