First post so be gentle :)

Because of their flexibility these mini routers are great little jiggers both at home and especially if you travel a lot. Was looking for a replacement travel router for my TP-Link TL-WR802N. Something a little bit more flexible that was actually getting firmware updates, would support a (tethered/USB) 4G modem and supported OpenVPN.

The GL-MT300N-V2 supports full OpenWRT, multiple modes and the USB 5V 1A power input gives you heaps of options to power (from notebook, phone charger, powerbank) for remote applications.

Caveat: Not going to be the fastest nor have the best WiFi range and only supports 2.4 Ghz (n). Need to take into account for usage cases.

Cheapest I can find especially with the free shipping including expedited. This is shipped direct from the manufacturer www.gl-inet.com but is cheaper than ordering from Gl.Inet website directly.

Cashback with Cashrewards or Shoprewards.

MINI TRAVEL ROUTER: Convert a public network(wired/wireless) to a private Wi-Fi for secure surfing. Tethering, 3G/4G USB Modem Compatible. Powered by any laptop USB, power banks or 5V DC adapters (sold separately). 39g (1.41 Oz) only and pocket friendly.
OPEN SOURCE & PROGRAMMABLE: OpenWrt pre-installed, USB disk and WebCam extendable.
LARGER STORAGE & EXTENDABILITY: 128MB RAM, 16MB Flash ROM, dual Ethernet ports, UART and GPIOs available for hardware DIY.
OPENVPN CLIENT & TOR: OpenVPN client pre-installed, compatible with 20+ VPN service providers. TOR firmware available for downloading.

Specs in case any body was wondering:

    CPU T7628AN@580Mhz
    16MB FLASH
    128MB RAM

    OpenWRT install guide:

    https://openwrt.org/toh/gl.inet/gl.inet_gl-mt300n_v2

Should be good to about 1MB/sec with UDP-based OpenVPN.

  • Can this support iPhone tethering as the internet source (i.e. instead of a 4G USB modem)?

  • Missed out damn

  • Note that it appears you now need prime for free delivery.

In regards to the delivery, mine was shipped from Singapore on Tuesday, and I just got a notification that it's being delivered today, so can't complain about the service.

  • I haven't looked at this, but it looks very good. There is one huge advantage to a truly portable device though - one that has it's own battery - signal strength. I was stuck in a hospital rooms for weeks, and the only place that would get any signal was on the window frame that ran across the window half way up. I have often found this travelling too (3rd world countries); you can put the router where it gets the best signal. Powerpoints, as in the hospital room, are often a long way from where this optimal location is.

  • Thank Op. I ordered one for testing.

  • Hey all, I am going to use my ELI5 (explain it like I'm 5, for non-redditors) card here!

I travel often for work and am constantly having to hotspot my phone due to hotel wifi being so poor. What can I do with this exactrly and how does it work? Can I get better speeds than the hotel offers through my own account or something?

    Thanks in advance

    • In regards to travel, think of this like a convenience device. This can be used to share a WiFi connection amongst your other devices, so you only have to connect one device to the hotels internet, instead of connecting every device every time. The other benefit is it enables use of devices that rely on a WiFi network, like Chromecast.

In your case, this would only be helpful if the hotel offered fixed line internet. You could plug that line directly into this device, which can then beam the connection out on your own private WiFi network (which will almost definitely be reliable than the hotels public network).

      • OK cool, thanks for that explanation. Most hotels I go to have terrible internet and usually wifi only, so no good for me :(

  • How does the GL-MT300N-V2 rate against the TP-Link TL-WR902AC Wireless-AC 750Mbps which you can get currently from CA with 20% off $49? Big diff that I can see is no 5GHz for the GL-MT300N but 1 extra port than the TP-Link and TP-Link is approx $12 more.

    TP-Link is
    1 10/100Mbps WAN/LAN Port
    1 USB 2.0 Port
    IEEE 802.11ac/n/a 5GHz
    IEEE 802.11b/g/n 2.4GHz
    Limited 3-Year Warranty

    GL-MT300N-V2 300Mbps is
    1 WAN
    1 LAN
    1 USB2.0
    1 micro USB (power)
    802.11 b/g/n

    • More ram and onboard flash with the GL-MT300N-V2

    • @rabidt73 For me the big difference is that the TP-Link is running proprietary software (as well as the WR802n) and the firmware updates have been slow . It appears they have (finally) just released a new firmware for the WR902AC that deals with Krack, but the WR802n is still running a very old firmware (WR802n April 2017).

The GL-MT300N-V2 runs OpenWRT which opens it up a lot for various functions and gives you a lot more flexibility. It appears that you can load OpenWRT on the WR902AC however installation is not just a firmware upgrade via GUI but mucking around with a TFTP Server AND you may lose the 5Ghz band (WR902AC V3, V1 works). Lastly WR902AC doesn't support OpenVPN which most of the major VPN providers use. Really depends on your needs. I still love my WR802n but some of my needs have outgrown it (it will be repurposed from my main travel router). It would have been nice to have the AR750 with dual and WISP via 2.4 and LAN via 5Ghz but the $$ and size and my usage it doesn't stack up. YMMV! :)

  • Thanks, bought two, but not sure if OpenWrt or Rooter firmware will work reliably because GL.inet states "Opensource wifi drivers also work but it has some bugs and cause kernel panic. This problem was never solved by the community."

    • I note the line above that says "WiFi performance is improved using MTK proprietary driver".

To me that implies that the GL.Inet firmware uses the proprietary drivers rather than the open source. I'm intending to run with the GL.Inet firmware if it works fine and does everything I want (WISP, Router, 4G, Tether, VPN, DLNA ) . I'm assuming given the market that these address people have examined the Gl.Inet firmware. Maybe not as "secure" as a pure open source but…….. Can always bounce between the two versions anyways :)

    Back again

  • Arrived yesterday!

Funny how sometimes CHEAP stuff arrives SO fast from overseas. Faster than some eBay sellers from same state.
