Does This Annoy You?

The line between being savvy and being cheap: I do not consider myself cheap I believe that people get these things confused however there are two extremes on Ozbargin and I wonder if annoys others too.

Their are a bunch of people on this forum who earn big wages +150k have loads of equity in property and stocks and are still driving a 1999 Hyundai excel, wearing $3 outfits and living with there parents because they don’t want to pay for utilities in one of there 6 investment properties and basically always trying to squeeze $200 of value out of $10 note – these people I honestly cant stand in real life they are the type of people you are at a pub shout them a drink for $10 and when they go to shout you a drink it has to be under $9.95 so they make a moral profit or even worse they just take off and never off a round.

On the other side (these people are less prevalent on this forum)

Are the exact opposite these people make barely earn over min wage or just simply don’t want to work so they sponge of the government buy almost everything on credit couldn’t save $12 to save there life, and cant understand why there landlords wont let them have a dog in there rental even though they haven’t paid there rent for 3 months but can somehow afford to look after a pet – these people equally annoy the shit out of me.

Now they don’t have to fit the exact picture I painted but we all know people who are excessively cheap and those who are over spenders do they annoying you in real life/on ozbargin would you put yourself in one of those two categories?

    .

  • Only the second. The first annoys me not because of their cheapness - they can spend their money how they want, but more of a moral issue if they're being cheap at the expense of others who're doing them a favour.

    barely earn over min wage

    That's $37,388 before tax for 38 hours.

simply don’t want to work so they sponge of the government buy almost everything on credit

I think this person is imaginary since it's very hard to get credit if you are receiving only unemployment benefits.

What astounds me is the enormous numbers of people who are working and still use credit despite the losses this causes.

    • +2

Never seen anyone irl on Centrelink and were able to get a credit card or a loan, and I went to school with a few dole bludgers.

      • +2

        Thats not the narrative….

Actually living on a pension (old people) is a pretty shitty existence (unless you own your home, etc).

      • there's special loans and micro credit for the unemployed.

    • actually its not, they want unemployed and pensioners, they want to charge them fees,.. thats their best clientele actually… makes sense now dosnt it? people who shoudnt have it, will miss use it and the banks profit.

    • If you have a job apply for credit, get the loan then you lose the job boom your centrelink and cant pay the loan. I see it a lot

That seems to be a recurring theme in this thread

        • High wages, low literacy…

  • +3

    Yes, they annoy me greatly.

What probably annoys me most though, is how although I want to feel superior to both these groups, they still continue to impact me, despite it being apparently trivially easy to avoid them.

It really throws a wrench in the idea that I'm somehow not part of the same compost heap of this world.

  • +3

The tight ass with a $$$ will annoy me much much more - that said, that guy with six investment properties is "sponging" off the government too - it's likely called negative gearing. The goal is always be negatively geared, and if you are positively geared and paying taxes on top of this, then it's time to buy the 7th property.

    • +1

They aren't sponging off the government, they're paying less taxes. The government will get their due eventually from capital gains tax.

      • +2

They are 'sponging' and I say this as a someone who has utilised and benefited from negative gearing for the past 12-13 years; so yes, I am also critiquing myself.

Put it this way - if there was no negative gearing would people be interested? Why are people - well investors - concerned that a federal Labor government will get rid of negative gearing for new property acquisitions?

        The government does not eventually get their due from capital gains tax; they get some of the gain but not all of it. There are discount methods see the link below; a 50% discount if you own property longer than 12 months;

And then the gain is added to your assessable income and then that gets further reduced depending on your tax bracket.

        • -1

So what you're saying is that these people are net positive contributors to the welfare state, but not positively enough?

How does that annoy you more than someone who is a net negative contributor?

          • +1

@Jolakot: Absolutely nothing wrong with a welfare state - I believe we can do much more for our vulnerable and not as fortunate people living in our community. If someone wants to rely on the pension, go for it but I bet it would suck! If we all paid more taxes so hospitals and community services are properly funded - count me in.

The OP said people (on below min wage or don't want to work) who rely on the government are sponging off …. I commented that people who are well off can also "sponge" off the government - and gave my examples on why I believed that.

Why more fortunate people who are tightasses annoy me, for obvious reason - they can afford it but too tight, too worried or too anxious to spend - life is living, doesn't matter how much you have - just enjoy it and make the most of what you have. No need to over think things.

          • +2

@Jolakot: I will give you my example; about 8 years ago my taxable income was around $45,000 despite earning six figures from my work and having three investment residential properties being rented out. Now, because my employer PAYG tax, I ended getting a significant tax refund after my taxes were submitted.

I am kicking myself now because I should have bought another investment and try and bring my taxable income further down with another negatively geared property. Plus the housing boom, if I had bought that one more property, that value would have almost doubled and I would be laughing today (despite the >10% price drop).

So yes, I am not a good contributor (then despite having good cash flow). You should be annoyed at people like me to - but then again, some multinationals pay little company tax.

            • @TheMindsetTraveller: And in that time you provided rent below cost, a social benefit.

When it comes time to sell your taxable income will include capital gains, and the government will get paid.

You either buy negatively geared property with capital appreciation being the main goal or a positively geared property that provides direct income with little capital growth, like an apartment.

The government gets their cut regardless.

              • @Jolakot: Unless you don't sell

              • @Jolakot: Rent is not a net benefit if it causes houses to go higher than the average person can pay, because the investor is getting a tax benefit. Real estate speculators give themselves a warm fuzzy feeling sayin those sort of things but they are just pissing in everyone’s pocket. More than happy for prices to drop, speculators to go broke and the housing market to return to sane levels. Housing as an investment option is retrograde.

    • Your assumption is that everyone buys a property to make a loss and hopefully scoop something up in the forms of tax savings. This won't get far with lenders, they want cashflow.

      • Obviously a borrower's capacity to repay is a separate and important consideration for lending purposes. No lender in their right mind in today's financial climate (esp after the royal commission) will lend people who can't afford it. Five years ago, ime lenders wanted to give me literally whatever I wanted.

For tax purposes, negative gearing may not be the one and only goal but it is very useful tool to use. Over a million Australians utilise negative gearing at any one time, and because of this popularity - Labor will lose the election on this issue alone. Removing this 'benefit' for future investments and hoping to claw back up to $3billion each year that people claim from negative gearing, is going to make Labor lose - but I can see why they want to do this.

When I bought my first investment 13 years ago, I had very little idea what negative gearing was. My goal then was to buy a place so that I could rent it out, and my tenant would 'help' me pay my mortgage off quicker. Little did I know all the things you could deduct because you owned a property for investment only purposes.

Property prices have gone up, up, and up but my actual property, the bricks, the concrete, the walls, the floors - they get older each day that goes by, it gets more worn each day that goes by, and this is losing me money - this for tax purposes, is depreciation - and this is one of the biggest deduction component for investment properties.

There is a lot to learn from the examples of earning and spending here.

Don't forget its the internet. Getting triggered from reading something online means its time for a walk outside.

It's important in life to learn from the people who don't pay you back when you're in high school. By the time you're out of school, you're clever enough to know how people respect, in terms of money and the ability to earn and use it.

Some of us are lucky enough to learn from siblings.

Don't get mad, get even. Learn something new about finance or tax that will improve your situation. Learn about investment and savings. Don't be afraid to research someone else's claim for tax/investment/property advice. You can always know more.

    • +4

Getting triggered from reading something online means its time for a walk outside.

Beatiful quote. Going to use this a lot now.

  • +5

    I hate both types.

The second type is currently bothering me more.
When at school a few kids would actually refuse to do any work, they'd quarrel with the teachers and youth counsellors cause they didn't want to do any work like everybody else, you know what they'd say "I just come here to claim Youth Allowance/Centrelink" and then they would pretty much flip the finger to the teacher/youth counsellor.
One guy I hate, I loathe and despise his guts, all he'd ever to was bang on about how great and wonderful he is at gaming especially fortnite, his plans to stream his gaming escapades and make a billion dollars like some streamer made in a month… He'd bang on about his escapades during class, during lunch…
One time the maggot was grumpy, he just kept on randomly saying to people 'I'm a man, men don't talk about their problems, I'm tough' yudda yudda, he sat down at the table where I was peacefully having my lunch, had the nerve to drop "subtle" hints for money, tells me how he is such a great guy for helping out a friend by loaning him money but now he doesn't have any for his electricity…
He also turned down a job because he didn't want to ride the bus to work for half an hour….
He really, really, really disgusts me and that's putting it politely.

Meanwhile one of my friends who went to the same school as me, is so poor she sleeps on cardboard boxes, can't afford a bed, can't afford a mattress.
Her family is in private rental and the house is invested with termites, they can't afford to rent anywhere else, and as far as I know they haven't applied for government housing, I'm very certain they haven't, they just don't seem like the type to ask for help.
She doesn't even eat 3 times a day, she gets dinner but breakfast and lunch is up to her.
She never ever, has not once asked or even hinted for help from me or anyone.
I could go on and on but you get the picture.
She scored her first job earlier this year, she was so happy.
She bought cloths, new phone galaxy s9 on a plan, oh and she now eats so much better too.
Forgot to mention her bus ride to work is over an hour and she has to take multiple buses, though she didn't turn down the job, no she was happy to get it, oh and she works all kinds of random hours and still turns up for school every weekday.
Oh forgot to mention she volunteers too, once a week and has been for the past 3 years.
BTW there are plenty of other kids at the school I used to go to that are in similar situations to her.
Also she has a mental illness/difficulties.

So yes, there are some really low life disgusting maggots that cheat the welfare system, but there are others that truely need help, it's these people that need a leg up, this is what the welfare system is for and people with a disability.

Forgot to mention that guy doesn't have a disability or any any mental problems.
    That guy seriously disgusts me😡.

Apologies for my Grammer but I'm on my phone on a bus.

I am afraid to tell you that it's part of growing up and it is going to get worse sadly :(

      • :(.

I've been needing to do that rant for some time, it feels so much better now.

        • +1

Thanks for sharing man it puts life into perspective I went to a junk high school too and growing up i know a bunch of blokes just sponging off their parents even though they are in there last 30s

    • +4

The girl sounds nice but she really shouldn't be investing in termites.

  • +7

Cheap out of touch rich bastards are extremely prevalent here. It's both pathetic and highly annoying. They do pay for it in a way by not actually being able to enjoy their lives thanks to their obsession with money and having no personality, but I'm not sure that evens out as ignorance is indeed bliss.

  • +1

    I hate humanity.

    • +2

Try to remember that it's always easier to see the one rotten grape on a bunch. It's what you choose to focus on.

The majority of people are trying to do the right thing, get on with their lives, are pretty reasonable citizens, etc. Forums will generally bring out more extreme or different views and stories, because that is what makes people click on the post. At least at OZB there is some good advice, humour, and useful information as well.

      • +1

I go to OZB for friendship. To be able to chat with people who think like me gives me faith in humanity.

Wow, your mind really is racked by assumptions and stereotypes.

Amazing you've even got the motor function to walk to your keyboard.

I usually wear $2.50 cotton t shirts from ebgames. :)

  • Their are a bunch of people on this forum who earn big wages +150k have loads of equity in property and stocks

People with loads of equity in property and stocks probably don't have big wages +150k because they don't work. Instead they have rental and dividend income which steadily grows over time.

  • No such thing as a 99 i20, there are excels of that era though.

    • I think he was exaggerating to prove a point….

It's almost as annoying as posters on OzBargain who complain constantly and start stupid threads - that's my most annoying issue

None of your bizwacky how they spend their money.
Get outside and kick a footy.

  • +7

It's still a free country, stop worrying about what other people are doing with their money.

    • +1

I dont really mind what other people think but sometimes it is nice to know that you are not the only one who feels a certain way

      • +2

its the internet….look hard enough you are bound to find someone out there that will to align with you on anything

    • …I bet in future it won't be as free and everyone will need to conform to something or a particular style of life as directed by our mighty rulers. Divergents will be shot and killed; there is no room for error.

  • +7

Judgemental people annoy me more than any of the spending patterns described.

Rich stingy people might have come from a poor background. Or might be saving for something. Or might not be as rich as you think because they borrowed big to buy that fancy car. (Regardless, if they get an expensive drink on me then don't buy their round, I'm not hanging out with them again)

Poor overspending people most likely don't know any better, they're doing what their parents did and their friends do, and studies have shown being poor makes you less able to make good financial decisions.

    • +2

      Judgemental people annoy me more

      You mean like the OP?

      • Sounds like we are all judgemental here.

  • +3

Person A - In a "natural" economy (ie. Absence of chronic inflation), Person A only makes what they are capable of squeezing out of a dollar. It's linear profit; paid for their discomfort. They're irritating to hang around with but you they don't place any burden involuntarily on anyone else.

Person B - consumes more than they produce. Only exist with limbs in this country. Loan sharks would have got to them elsewhere. Becomes a burden to everyone else.

  • +2

heh, my work mates think Im a cheapskate… jokes on them… I'm OCD

    • Overall Cheap Dude?

  • +4

Not meaning to be rude but reading through your blurb I could not help but notice you have your "their" and "there" mixed around the wrong way… so if you choose to learn and self improve, there you go.
    Cheers.

  • +2

Yes your clickbait title annoys me.

  • Everything annoys but I learnt a long time ago everybody even the scumbags all have their place somehow someway.. you may be just seeing one dimension of that person but everybody has many dimensions even those we hate and despise.. believe me it takes two to tango and many more to build a society.

We are all one in someway some how.. kumbaya malo kumbaya maho (definitely incorrect spelling lol)

    • +1

You’re right, every ecosystem needs its bottom feeders for higher species in the food chain to prosper. Whether it be slime, maggots, bacteria, tapeworms, or as in the current ecosystem discussion - scumbags.

      • +1

thanks for agreeing with me and acknowledging me now I can sleep and be at peace.. peacefully

        thank you Ozpit

    • No, everyone needs to conform! Perfection is paramount!

      • All in all we're just a nother brick in the wall.

  • Their are a bunch of people on this forum who earn big wages +150k have loads of equity in property and stocks and are still driving a 1999 Hyundai excel, wearing $3 outfits

God forbid they don't focus on vanity in order to feel good about themselves.

  • +1

Everybody annoys me. I hate people. I’m gonna go back under my rock

    • Something wrong with the username here

  • I agree with the annoyance toward both, but I do like cookies so i'm unsure as to how to spend my vote

  • +2

The worst type of people are the pissheads who came up with rounds in the first place.

"Oi! I 'ave an idea! Why don't we all buy our own bloody drinks and skip all the fake gestures to begin with."

Or maybe spend a Friday evening after work without drowning out your sorrows in a binge session. Betty.

    • When I shout a round I legit don't care if we all leave the pub and go home. I do it because I genuinely feel like it.

  • I earn well but in reality i live pay cheque to pay cheque due to investment targets and commitments. I would love to be a cheapo and regret not being one always:-(

  • I know someone who was in the second group. Always flashing new phones /car / large house. Heavily in debt. Weren't able to meet repayments even with the extremely low interest rates, banks wouldn't consolidate their debt (too risky). Lost everything and now living with their parents. Declaring bankrupt and banks offered to reduce their debts by 30% if they can pay it off. Bank just gave them free money.

Even now they'll go and buy a $5 coffee when out. They have no idea how to live within their means.

So the 2nd group annoys me more than the first.

  • Now they don’t have to fit the exact picture I painted

Can you please post the MS Paint file so we can all see?

  • Only people annoy me are those cannot use punctuation and cannot differ "there" from "their".

    • There trying they're hardest. Their.

      • Try hardlier, lol!
