  • hey ozb!
I've been thinking about upgrading/sidegrading from my i5 8600K OC at 4.8ghz to this. Would you think this is a smart move? I know I have to change the motherboard & Ram..

    Currently paired with a GTX 1080TI on a 1440P 144hz monitor.

8600k slightly better for gaming, 2600x slightly better for a work PC

      • Depends on workload, a lot of professional software isn't well threaded at all. And for gaming build I'd go with the 2600X as it's cheaper and put the money towards a better GPU anyway.

        • Upgrade Graphics card? Too what? I don't think there is anything you could possibly buy graphics wise that is gonna give you a noticeable upgrade that is still in price range associated with this 2600X plus the associated motherboard?

          • @jonathonsunshine: Oh sorry. I meant I were going for a new gaming build. And aside from graphics, there are other areas I'd spend on before going for a higher tier CPU, a pretty net display being a big fat chunk of that. That's me though, probably should add the caveat that I'm a sucker for high res rather than high refresh rates.

$300 plus cost of mobo for no real noticeable difference in performance?

      I'm gonna say no…

I wouldn't. If you are a gamer, there would be no difference, in fact the i5-8600k would be slightly better.

      • actually can't believe he even asked lol

    • Just wait for the 3000 series chips if u have a 8600k. They will absolutely destroy games with huge core counts and core clocks equal to Intel's chips. Since they won't be real cheap at launch I'd save my money if I were you.

I just got my 2600X build. The CPU is great the only problem is it does not down clock enough when idle. With Windows 10 balanced power profile it goes down to 2GHz, whereas my Intel i5-6600k would go down to 1GHz and temperature stays below 30 most of the time. Ryzen 2600x is typically above 30. That annoys me a little because I'm used to ultra cool and silent builds.

    • Yup, absolutely true.

  • While this is a great CPU, and I entirely recommend it, I would also factor in the cost for an aftermarket cooler with this CPU.

The provided wrath spire let temps hit 90 deg (ambient 27) on my system with the CPU hitting full TDP. With good case ventilation, this might decrease a little, but still excessive I think.

I placed a cryorig H7 (which is horribly designed btw) on mine, which keeps it under 70 with a fairly silent fan profile.

    • Weird I used the CPU cooler with it for a bit and I didn't get that high. I am on water cooling atm as I like a quieter system.

      • At the time, I found a couple of people who reported similar findings to me, although some didn't, topping out in the high 70s. I'm curious if different CPUs packages might have different thermal characteristics. I mean, not all wafers are equal. Also, my case ventilation was poor at that time, which probably added 5 degrees…
