Summary : very good for stills, very bad for video. Tempted.

big crop for video when shooting 4k.
this does not affect full hd video

other than that, its a really good dslr replacement. comparable to canon 80d dslr

      • This vs G7?

        • I'd go the G7 if video was a priority, or if you want something more compact for travel.

        • I would actually go with the m50 over the g7. 4K recording needs a good PC to edit and is barely worth the trouble for the little benefit it would offers to casual film makers. On the contrary the dual pixel AF @ 1080p on the Canon is amazing. It’s simply a set and forgot for filming and will result in many more usable shots without monitoring as compared to the Pana. A gripe of the Canon is that the image is less sharp even though is had a larger sensor which can be annoying but I think dual pixel AF is more valuable to a casual audience than anything else.

I have one. Video is excellent and AF is perhaps the best of any comparable camera. 4k is a waste of time but 1080p is superb.

Totally agree, get a video device if you want 4k. This is a great camera with great 1080 and unbeatable at this price.

    • +1

You're not wrong about video for 4K due to the crop but who needs 4K quality? 1080P is fantastic.
If you really want to record 4K, there's lenses and attachments you can use.

I purchased the m50 2 months ago and I love it! Very light and compact to carry along with me.

A lot of people with this camera really recommend the canon ef-m 22mm lens. Generally sells for about $200.

        • +1

Yep. ef-m 22mm was my first lens after so many great reviews. The Ozbargain in me couldn't wait for the lens to drop in price so I went ahead and purchased it full price, no regrets.

Sharp quality photos, especially in low light.

          • +1

@Tekkky: Yeah the 22mm is my go to lens for walkabout.

Seems canon gonna release more lenses for the efm. This will be interesting

            EF-M 16-50mm f/3.5-5.6
            EF-M 15-45mm f/3.5-6.3
            EF-M 18-130mm f/3.4-5.6
            EF-M 18-200mm f/3.5-6.3
            EF-M 15-130mm f/3.5-6.3

            • @marantz: That's pretty cool.

I think from the above list, I'll probably grab the 18-200mm to replace my 55-200mm.

"Very bad for video" - bit of an exaggeration. Give me another camera under $700 that offers 4k in some capacity. Canon came out that they had to limit the 4k features to protect its higher end models. Yes 120fsp in only 720p is average, but the M50 offers a lot to a person who is wanting the benefits of dslr at a fraction of the price.

^^ still very bad for video at $700?

The G7 had a recent deal with 3 lenses for $750.

Currently $699 for a single lens kit.
