Panasonic Lumix DC-FT7 Tough Camera - Black - $298 (Normally $569) @ Diamonds Camera

140

Just bought this in store today. They only had the display model available, so they think that may be why the price is so cheap. There is no mention of this on the website however, so perhaps they will honour other purchases. If not, you may be able to price match it elsewhere.

The camera gets generally decent reviews from review sites, but the ones on Amazon paint a very different picture. Apparently, Panasonic released a firmware update that resolved any soft focus issues, so those reviews are probably no longer relevant.

It may also be worth noting that they have spelled the name wrong as "Lumic" in the ad, but it is definitely the genuine article.

  • Even with $10 shipping that's a cracking bargain mate.

    • Not a good camera. You buy a separate camera so you can have nice sharp photos & you do not have to worry about the battery. This fails at both as image quality is similar to my old phone Samsung S5 & battery life is 250 photos.

Do you have one? It has had a firmware upgrade to fix the focussing problem it had on release. I don't think I would take 250 photos in a day, so battery life will not be a problem. Also, it's built as a rugged waterproof camera that will take a hell of a lot more punishment than your S5. At this price, it's damn good value for what you get. I have a Sony that has better zoom and image quality, but it won't be any good to me when I'm snorkelling on my cruise

        • Not sure about recent firmware upgrades, the firmware was updated on December 18th, 2018 (the same day I received it). I bought it to use during Xmas time/trips. A dedicated camera that does not take better pictures than your Samsung Note 8, that is disappointing. toughness is a secondary function imo.

          • @dan0909: No recent firmware updates. Version 1.1 actually came out in October 2018 to address the AF performance so chances are yours is current, but you can always check it in the menu. In your case, I think you may have been given poor advice or made the wrong decision to buy a rugged camera if you don't value that function. I would not be remotely interested in this model if I wasn't going to use it underwater and there are significantly better non-tough cameras available if you are normally spending over $500.

"Even with $10 shipping that's a cracking bargain mate."

      Is that Darryl Kerrigan? :)

    • What?!? Only a 1" screen…?!?

      (When I pay ~$300 for a DC
      I expect to get a 3" screen
AND a GPS, so I can be told
      that I'm standing, eg, in
      front of the Eifel Tower!)

PS 1 review said its Battery Life
is WORSE than the DC it replaces.

The product thumbnail illustrates a near-indestructible camera design. Possibly the only way to destroy it is to burn the paper it is printed on. :-)

    • Yeah, it looks like they are using monkeys to update their site and no-one to proof the entries.

  • I have a Lumix from a long time ago, really good for what it was back then, but these days cameras in phones or handheld are much more rugged than they use to be, so unless you are going to use this in the water a lot (like I did with mine) you might not get your money's worth.

Yes, the image is a bit soft. When you take photos in the water, you come across this problem often!

    • Agreed. I bought this with the specific purpose of using it underwater, but most other times I would use my phone or my Sony.

You've got to laugh when people compare the pic quality of this camera to their Iphones or similar.Try dropping your phone from a metre or more onto rocks and see what happens. Then see how you go wading in waist deep water etc.Horses for courses, and battery life has never been an issue with the various "tough" phones I've had over the years.
