Competition for the Cycliq Fly6? This one looks significantly heavier. But only a quarter of the price!

    • +3

Fly6 in my opinion is crazy overpriced for what it is. Might consider this one.

      • Been a few issues with the Cyliq as well. A guy in my group is on to his third. Brilliant…when working

    • Wouldn't be hard, the video quality on the Fly6CE is garbage and hasn't been improved despite promises it would be.
And the top rubber flap leaks.

They easily pay for themselves on the road though. They have been the difference between nothing vs full new bike and a month on compo for people knocked off in hit and runs.

    • +1

Lol…. That looks like hanging balls

      • Therein lies the joke.

        • Up voted

    • From those images, the saddle might obstruct the angle of vision. The eye of the camera would need to be on the tip of some sort of extension.

  • -4

If at night, the video will be nearly useless. Not sure the point of this. Red light will be blowing out the camera. Daytime maybe it can be ok, but for such a tiny sensor good luck

    • +3

Have you seen youtube sample videos? Seem pretty good to me.

      • +5

If the quality is anything like the Fly6, then night time footage is pretty good.

I guess the good thing about Aldi is that you can buy and try, and then if you are not happy with it then you can just return it!

      • -7

Those cyclists on road bikes wearing Lycra who ride 1 metre away from the kerb might need one of these…

          • +13

@Austaurean: Maybe he had a bad experience with a D#ck opening his car door without checking for oncoming traffic?

            • +5

@kanter: Well said Kanter, I for one drive and ride a bike and have been clipped by a car door while in a bike lane it's not a nice experience. I have the scars to prove it. Cyclist and motorist need to be more considerate of other road users but drivers please keep in mind that cyclists are more exposed and unprotected then the motorist.

Plus its not not a legal requirement to use a bike lane.
              https://www.qld.gov.au/transport/safety/rules/road/special
"Bicycle riders can choose whether to use a bicycle lane—it isn’t mandatory."

              • @paulj13: Totally agree.. both cyclist and vehicle drivers need to behave better and be more aware of each other.
Plus i never said it was a legal requirement, i just think surely it would be safer,

            • -2

@kanter: That is a totally pointless comment and nothing to do with the example i gave.. i would just have thought that where a safe riding lane exists, then why not use it?, i am very cyclist aware and provide safe passing distance, dont have anything against cyclists i use to ride to school back in the day but i was aware of keeping safe and ride appropriately

              • +1

@Austaurean: There are usually reasons. A lot of debris tends to end up in the lane since with the 'dome's shape of the road the lane sits a touch lower than the main driving surface and debris (like glass) ends up down there because there aren't cars on it. Also, as is Brisbane City Council's speciality, there might be drain and hydrant covers. There's a lot going on with the road surface someone on a bike can see that you can't.

                • @The Vat: Yes, fair enough, i used to do a 40k round trip to school and back, so while its been a while since ive done any real riding, (years), i remember riding to keep safe and doing what i could to do that, Marbles or not.. Yes drains ive hit one of those and flipped, not fun.

  • Upgrade to my fly6 hahah
I wait for the Aldi fly12

Merged from Crane (ALDI) Folding E-Bike $799

Aldi is doing a folding e-bike next week. A good review below although seen as a little heavy but mitigated by the electric support.

    • Good deal, $700 from international online sites without delivery.

    • The review makes it sound like an excellent bike, but makes me wonder if there are any hidden "cheat codes" to ignore the 25kph cutout.

      • Good point, I reckon Aldi Uk would have had this before so worth searching to see what others have done with them to hack them.

      • You're not going to be able to squeeze much more out of a 250W motor with a 36V ~8Ah battery even if there are software tweaks available for this system. I can't find any info about derestricting Entity Cycling eBike systems.

Entity have a 468Wh (13Ah) battery available but it's $649 and I'm not sure if it'd work with the E100 series. If it does then all that you'll get is more range.

If getting past the limiter is important to you then just buy something based on a Bafang system as they appear to be easily tweakable, or do your research and find some other brand that you know is hackable.

With the wheel size and seating position on this bike I'd say 25km/h will feel fast enough.

The man in the picture isn't wearing a helmet.

      • +3

At least he got his music on ~ priority checked!

      • +1

Plot twist: he is riding in an indoor studio.

      • +18

That's because he's riding somewhere safer than around Australian drivers

        • The footpath :D

        • some states built specific bike pathways which are next to the road like a footpath just wider and they still ride on the road, let alone on the LHS of the white line in the widened area that is a road based bike path..
Lets ignore that and ride on the RHS of the white line and cause difficulties for vehicles in an 80k zone
          example: 35°15'03.8"S 149°04'43.1"E …… -35.251061, 149.078626
this road is quite good for cyclists when used correctly as it has a generous bike lane
but there is also a pathway separate to the road.

          • @Austaurean: A shared path suitable for slow riding bicycles happy to negotiate pedestrians etc.

Not for bunches on training rides or someone needing to get where they are going fast.

Note. Bicycle lanes are not cages for people on bikes. They are options available to people to encourage more people to ride who otherwise wouldn't because of concern for the danger.

People are completely entitled to use the road and should if their style of riding is inappropriate for bicycle paths.

            • @OldGuyFromTheMuppets: Yes fair enough, though, there are some good drivers and bike riders and some terrible ones, both sides are guilty of inappropriate driving/riding. The 'entitled' mentality of some does not help either.. just ride and drive to be safe..

      • You need to read the fine print at the bottom of the page.

    • +1

What are the chances of this taking 120kg total weight

      • +1

I'd give that a cautious "probably", if it will be ridden gently, as e-bikes often are.
Just check the tyre ratings and keep them well inflated.

If you plan to go fast down hills and over pot-holes, or pedal hard, better to get a non-folding bike.

    • +3

This whole bike is cheaper then trying to source all the parts separately.

      • great find!

      • +4

Spare parts are always more expensive

        • I doubt they sell many at those prices, or retail direct at all. That is just the "RRP".

          • @bargaino: Sure, but i challenge you to find a 250w electric kit for a bike for cheaper then the $799 aldi bike.

      • +2

That's true of pretty much all bikes and probably true of most manufactured products. Having a spare parts business means carrying a huge number of stock items in inventory most of which sell pretty slowly.

      • Great price.

I wish there was more info on dimensions of the hub. I'm tempted to fit the motor and battery onto a bike with a better groupset and lighter frame.

I already have a much better gravel bike for commuting, but don't know if I want to ride the 35km return trip every single day during the imminent Melbourne rail shutdown. This would be useful for the 5km trip to the nearest unaffected rail line, and later on I'd move the drive pack to a more versatile frame.

        • Much cheaper and better to buy a conversion kit from China than ripping one off this bike.

    • +4

Why does Aldi sell the most random things?

      • +10

Because people like us talk about them

      • +3

Twice a week they have a sale to get people into the store. It's a clever tactic. Colesworths have pretty much the same stock all the time.

      • To get people to come into their stores, also to make money.

Why Aldi sells such weird things

    • +1

Will they be selling a normal foldable bike like last year?

    • +2

      Throttle or pedal assist?

      • pedal assist

        • Does that mean that you can't just pull the lever and let the bike take you when you are sick of pedaling?

  • Second that!

  • +3

Found this, seems to be an older model of the light/camera and the forum goes on for years but offers insight into the light/camera firmware upgrade and some user reviews deeper into the forum. https://www.cyclechat.net/threads/aldi-rear-camera.224217/

  • +2

Will only be a matter of time until they're selling electric scooters too!

    • +2

I'm waiting for flying cars, so I can park on my roof.

    • Are the electric bikes legal? I think i saw on news, even electric scooters not legal?

      • For bikes it depends on the power rating, no doubt every state would have different rules. From memory, 250Watts sounds about right for a bike.

      • +2

Yep legal - just gotta comply with your states power limits and max speed requirements (which of course all differ state to state).

      • +1

Depends on your state. In SA you can have up to a 250w motor in pedelec (pedal assisted) mode up to 25km/h, at which point the motor must cut out. Throttle only modes are allowed up to a maximum of 6km/h.

        https://www.sa.gov.au/topics/driving-and-transport/cycling/r…

    • Already sold last year @ Aldi.

      • Really? Did you get one what’s it’s like? I have all their email catologues in my gmail going back years and can’t see it there. Would love to get a local review especially given that’s this one seems different to the UK model.

        • Thought I saw one in store, but might be mixing it up with other store(s).

Did not get one, but was around $99-$129 so was tempted at the time.

        • +2
  • +1

    full catalogue?

  • just get a motorbike $2600 and goes way faster

    • Because 2600 != 799

    • +5

Motorbike does not go in your car boot, on the train, or under your office desk like this one.

Cheap motorbike though! Why are Honda scooters so expensive in Australia?

      • +6

That '125cc motorbike' also requires registration and insurance that costs more for 1 year than this e-bike and the electricity for it will cost over years.

        • They are on sale $2790 ride away

    • Wow, didn't expect it's so cheap for a Honda. Not sure how much running costs in terms of rego and insurance. Definitely a great lock mover. Very tempted.

      • For me as a learner.
Rego is about 120-130 for all motorbikes, green slip is around 100+ (400 for me as I've got a sports bike) depending on the person/bike. If I bought this bike, greenslip would've only been about 130.

For this bike, I'd imagine third party would be something like 100-200 and comprehensive is likely 300-500.

Pretty cheap way to commute if you ask me, even if you do decide to go for a sportsbike where insurance prices are basically doubled.

    • +1

Mate that is cheap - you should post that bargain! Sometimes I wonder why bicycles cost so much when Honda can build and sell that for a fraction of a high end bicycle!

      • That’s what I mean. Some people pay thousands for a high end bicycle when a way more powerful motorcycle costs the same sometimes less. There are these carbo fibre bicycles with insane prices. If you want an e bike just get a real motorbike

    • +1

When I looked at electric bike prices I came to the same conclusion… Ended up actually buying a used sportbike, granted it's a different beast to a bicycle (longer and heavier with much wider tyres, and allowed to be used as a road vehicle) but a motorbike would probably get far more use by the owner than an electric bike with batteries that are on borrowed time.

  • anyone recommend cheaper light? dont need the camera

    • I have this one and rate it, very bright https://www.kmart.com.au/product/rear-usb-light/1617843

    • CatEye Omni 3
200h on flash mode, so I replace battery once a year. Cost around 20$

    • I have 2 of what paulj13 linked and I rate it as well, its not going to be professional level or whatever, but for a basic light that has different modes and is usb rechargeable it works very well, I have them on my 5 and 7 year olds bikes.

    • ALDI sell a front and rear light set without the camera for $30:

      https://imgur.com/a/oKcvhNq

I bought the set last year and highly recommend it (and I notice a lot of other riders have the set as well). USB rechargeable with 3 light settings.

      • I'm thinking of getting this one. Does it say how many lumens it puts out? Is the rear light USB rechargeable as well?

        • +1

A friend got this set last year too, the front light is ridiculously bright. 1000 lumen I believe for the front (16 onthe back). Whatever it is the front is very bright and lasts a long time on a single charge.

    • There is a light set in the catalogue.

  • +1

I am genuinely surprised that there isn't more cheap bike camera n usb light options on the market.
