  • Thanks.

  • Can I connect 2 of these in serial, from the original wifi router? I.e my house only has 1 wall port that works, and I need a long straight line of coverage from where the router is situated.

  • Non-AU plug makes this kinda pointless.

I don't understand why people still use this. It slows down the speed by half and your device has to keep jumping between wifi stations. I paid for mesh wifi and haven't looked back since.

    • What is mesh wifi?

      • +4

A wifi router with a few satellites that are like the repeater in this thread but they use a dedicated frequency to communicate between router and satellites. So when you move around in the house the wifi connection remains seamless with no loss of speed. Check out products like Netgear Orbi, Google Mesh and TP-Link Deco (in no particular order of preference).

        • Ok, cool thanks. Will look into it.

        • With the Netgear Orbi, what if you need another satellite? Do they sell extra satellites?
Or will I need to buy another set?

      • I went for the better value Tenda Nova MW6. Got it for under $200 locally. I'm getting 90+Mbps on ethernet through my NBN100. And 70-80Mbps on Wifi near the mesh routers.

I used both MW5 and Orbi. Tenda is OK but the issue is that switching between stations is not as seamless as Orbi. There is a "Fast Roaming" option but it was actually better for me to switch it off rather than on!

    • Exactly after moving to mesh it’s like night and day.

This is misleading! It can not deliver "up to 300Mbps" when acting as a wireless repeater, Wi-FI is half-duplex thus the most you could get with this is half the rate (in this case 150Mbps)!

I'd prefer to use a second router and set it up as an AP. Better coverage and doesn't reduce your speed. But that's what works for me.

    • Any tips on how to easily do this? We already had a telstra smart modem 2, but they sent us another one, so would be keen to set one up as another access point (presumably off the first modem's signal?).

Generally you set up APs on a wired cable back to the original router. Not off the WiFi signal.

As explained above ANY use of repeater/booster will dramatically affect the speed of the wireless.

Mesh (with dedicated wireless backhaul channel as the ones detailed above) are a FAR better option.

        HAVING SAID THAT

I have also set up numerous clients with a single Ubiquiti AP in the middle of the residence. The claimed range is 183 metres and that's to be taken with a grain of salt but generally it EASILY covers a whole house. YMMV with 2 storey houses but the ones we've tried generally cover two floors also.
