  • How does the efficiency or cost to run of this compare with gas Hot water units?

    • It doesn't, this is many times more efficent and costs almost nothing to run.

      • +1

Isn't a "heat pump" basically a single cycle air conditioner? I'm surprised it's so cheap to run.

Then again I guess gas prices are a bit of a disaster over east!

        • How much do you pay for gas?

        • +1

1kWh of energy is turned into up to 4kWh of heating by using a heat pump, nothing is as effective for heating hot water especially since our governments screwed us on gas pricing.

Gas hot water is 3-4 times less efficient.

          • @Maverick-au: I could be wrong, last time I researched these I found solar was the winner with heat pumps in second. Both left the other options for dead though.

I'm stuck with a cruddy Rheem Heat Pump at this house (there when we bought it), it's been failing for 2 years, the fan stopped entirely for 3 months and now is working again. Waiting for the day when the hot water is no more.

            • @Click_It: Solar hot water is too expensive to install and maintain, you buy one of these units and you run it when it suits you and your power usage. Keep the space on your roof for solar panels.

The solar hot water systems are not as good as the older ones and there are too many problems with them to consider.

The Rheem units are a disgrace and our government should have ordered Rheem to replace them with another brand. They like making huge profits by selling this cheap shoddy rubbish but won't spend any on fixing the problems.

I think you may be confusing a heat pump hot water system with a heat pump to cool/warm your house. Putting it very simply, the heat pump hot water system uses the ambient heat to heat the water up, which uses bugger all electricty. I believe they maintain warm temperatures when the ambient temperature is low by using electricity.

@pyr0maniac: they both work same way, heat pump hot water system only work in heating mode, unlike air con system that can work 2 way.

    • My heat pump which is a different brand costs me an average of 40 cents a day for 2 people over the last year

      • +1

Gas connection charge is more than that person day, so makes sense to cut the gas off.

Also good if you have solar panels with a low FIT or off peak electricity

        • Yeah mine is off peak

  • Is this brand any good?

No information in the description of how I choose which model is most suitable.

    • It's the same unit sold by Hydrotherm, we've had one at least five years with no problems and we only use a few kWh per day.

    • Click on the images the second image gives you all the information you need to know.

    • How much hot water do you use per day?

      • I've done what I always do and gone the big one! I'm a single man, so I'll never run out lol.

  • +1

I have a hydrotherm system and I would not be surprised if this is made by the same manufacturer as they look very similar. I was a little nervous when I purchased the product, however it was a lot cheaper than the German brands and it was either that or an old fashion electric hot water system like I had before. I decided to embrace the new tech and the energy savings that come with that. I have found the Hydrotherm to be excellent. It has never missed a beat in 4 years. In fact I have not even had to touch it since install. My parents on the other hand purchased the German brand one and have had nothing but problems. They are now also considering purchasing one. The only thing I have done to to protect the systems digital display is cover it with a patch of heat resistant material ( Just buy a car sun shield and cut a small square) I hear this was an issue on a few blogs so have done this since install.

  • These were free not long ago as long as u have an existing storage hw system and no solar. Search chromagen plus rees on here. Reviews werent good.

    • Yeah was looking at it when it was free from Vic government but reviews were terrible

      • +1

Do you every see praise and good reviews on the interwebs? not often…

        • Yes I do but unfortunately the company sticks them up

      • They have mixed reviews. Mine is going strong for some time. At this price, you're getting paid to get it.

    • I got larger version 280L installed for 700$ (after all stc and vic rebates). after 3 years still going on.

  • What Is 'Student Edge'?

How is the final price calculated? Did it include the STC rebate?

Also, worth noting - $785 Cash back when purchased at Bunnings. Bringing their purchase price of $1,799 down to $1,014 after Cash Back.

Edit: although it's not clear how much for each model and it seems it includes the STCs. More investigation needed!

    • Where did you get the information about the cash back?

    • +1

      $1394 is without the STC's. so with the STC's it's $162.1

The $785 is if you let them claim the STC's for you. You're giving up around $500 for the convenience of the instant discount.

also, add around $500 for the plumber and electrican fee

      • You don't need to get an Electrician out straight away as these have a 3 pin plug on the end and don't draw a lot of power so you can run an extension lead. All you need is an outdoor GPO installed near the unit.

Plus plenty of plumbers will disconnect and reconnect the power so you may not even need that although it's a bit different as the power in the existing HWS is connected inside and you want an outdoor GPO fitted or a junction box.

    • Just noticed the '$800 REBATE'. However no details in the Description. I'm betting it's asking the same lines, and includes the STCs.

      • it would've been mentioned in the description if that was the case.

  • For me the price comes up as $1440. How is it 1394?

I have been thinking of Sanden at $4.5k vs $500 (for 2 ) + installation. This is after the STCs

Question: if it breaks down in 3 years and will I be eligible for STCs for the replacement unit. It doesn’t work that way for replacement solar panels?

    • +1

      https://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/441494

you have to use their link.

considered the sanden. price difference is huge.

You're eligible for it once i believe.

    • Sandens are the rolls royce of heap pumps, though you would want to be staying at the residence long enough to warrant it. I'm sure you already know this.

  • Any deals in NSW to bring the price down? I'm assuming not.

And would I be eligible for rebates anyway, this house has a nasty old Rheem Heat Pump HWS from years before we purchased. I assume rebates are tied to the house not the individual?

    • no state rebates in NSW

not sure, get one of the companies out for a quote and see what they say

  • Excuse my total ignorance with this, but I've got a big outdoor mains pressure gas hws. Can I replace it with the 280l version of this heat pump unit and still get mains pressure hot water? If so, bye bye gas.

    • +1

Yes, pretty much a direct replacement. You may need a tempering valve installed but it should take your plumber only a few hours if it goes in the same place.

      • is it still mains pressure though? felt the pressure dip a bit when switched from gas.

        • +1

Yes they are a mains pressure hot water system no different to a regular system just a different method of heating the water

      • Looks like I'm going down the research rabbit hole. Thanks all!

        • you'll be getting around $900 to switch

  • Does anyone know if there are any rebates or benefits for QLD buyers?

    • just stc

  • In Summer (no heating required, so my gas is only supplying hot water and cooking stove), my gas bill is around $80 for two months. It's such a minimal cost, it hardly seems worth the bother switching to a more efficient hot water service.
Other people switching from gas, how much saving are you expecting ? Is your gas bill significantly higher than mine ?
