The Mate X is expected to cost $4K whereas the Galaxy Fold is expected to cost $2400.
Fold is $2000 USD, which is more likely to translate to $3000+. $3000 would be conservative. $3500 might not be out of the question.
Just doing a USD to AUD conversion it will cost more than $2400. Then you have to add GST and Aussie Tax.
I think the phone will flop hard. Not many are going to pay that much for a phone no matter how good it is. Apple found out what happens when you charge so much for a phone — you lose $400B USD from your company's market cap. And their most expensive phone is cheaper than this.
Cheaper to buy a tablet and a phone and carry both. The square aspect ratio of the tablet mode is not for me. Phone mode on the Fold looks ugly. There's huge bezels around a pretty small screen.

@D3m3ntia: I know they don't intend to ship that many, but the small number will be perceived as an embarrassment to the company (the memes will be endless), and they most likely will not reveal sales figures, or they will combine them with other phones sales to obfuscate the low sales.
I would argue that XS Max very much is Apple's mainstream phone. It is their flagship, and they expect to sell a lot of them, to the same extend as Samsung expects to sell a lot of Note 9, S9+, S10+, Note 10, etc.
