It alternatives between 99 or 49.95 once in a while though..

At least after I complained they removed the supposed RRP of Office Academic Edition of $989! Yes, I buy the Academic Edition all the time for almost $1k ;)

  • +1

Good deal, but yeah so old. Been $49.95 on http://www.itsnotcheating.com.au/ which now redirects to http://www.microsoft.com/australia/office/startinguni/ for quite some time.

  • The windows 8 beta is coming soon so I doubt that this is a limited time offer. The price has been 49.95 for over 3 months now.

Check the ozbargain Wiki for student associated deals.

  • pretty sure it was at 99.95 recently , i checked about a week ago. cheers

  • Why would anyone pay to upgrade from XP to Win7 before 2014? Students - save the 50 bucks and stick with XP - it's a great OS, you have over 3 years left until it's obsolete. The $50 could go towards much better things, like students fees, etc.

    • What are student fees?

    • agree but still a good discounted deal

  • +6

    Or alcohol.

Can never have too much alcohol.

    • -1

Yep, but Bill Gates wants you to believe you need Win7. You don't. Just like you never needed Vista, but how many people were sucked into buying that?

      • +2

Vista was dreadful. I would gladly fork out fifty bucks to upgrade it to windows 7.

        • +2

Why? I'd "upgrade" Vista to XP. :D

        • +2

Windows XP is like the cockroach of operating systems — it just won't die!

      • +2

Windows 7 is awesome. I used XP yesterday after a year on W7 and it wasn't nearly as good as i remembered.

        • -3

Why? Because it's not as pretty as Win7? What wasn't XP able to do that Win7 could, for you?

        • +3

          SSD TRIM feature - jawsome

        • +5

The best thing about Windows 7 is the accessibility and ease of installation. It pretty much installs all the drivers for you. Thing I hated about XP and Vista was how you had to manually install all drivers for pretty much every piece of hardware and device. It was so frustrating when you couldn't find a driver after googling for it for hours. W7 has the speed of XP and the aesthetics of Vista.

      • +3

YOU NEED WINDOWS 7 to move on with new hardware support, don't you upgrade at all?

Also, windows 7 booted up fine on intel celeron and even installed ALL drivers without me digging out the legacy discs, you don't get this benefit from staying on XP. IT ALSO BOOTED UP FASTER THAN XP.

        • Mate with around 50% of people still using XP, there is no hardware or games out there that yet require it. Almost everything still works with XP.

        • Just cause2 need W7 to play…..

        • Newsflash:

the NSA (National Sec. Agency) recommends that you upgrade to Win 7:

          http://www.geek.com/articles/chips/the-nsa-recommends-you-up…

        • +1

MrZ haven't you heard of DirectX 11??? Last I checked it doesn't run on XP ;)

As someone else mentioned Windows XP doesnt support TRIM for SSDs, but I guess being a dinosaur still resisting change and holding onto XP you wouldnt be getting an SSD anytime soon….

      • Actually i would gladly take Vista over XP. Almost all the hate Vista gets is unfounded. Most bugs were ironed out shortly after release, In its current form Vista is a good OS.

W7 is far better than XP. Have fun trying to use XP 64bit BTW.

        Time to let XP die.

        • No way, like a good old dog, you don't put it down early just because it's old, you wait until it's on it's last legs (or can't even use them) and then do the deed. Wait until 2014, let it enjoy it's last 3 years in peace.

        • Nah i like the way W7 has a decent version of "media center" XPMCE was junk.

I also like having all my ram usable with a supported 64 bit OS.

Games are starting to not support xp already. Battlefield 3 will be vista or newer only!

If i followed the "use it till it dies" theory i would still be using a c64 or amiga. Actually a know someone that was still using an amiga till a few years ago!

I agree with leaving xp in peace. On a CD in a stack in the cupboard! :)

US students pay only $29.99 USD. It's sad that we have to pay more and still call it a bargain.

    • +1

I'm sure the price will come down when the population of Australia matches population of US.

      • sounds like a plan

        • +5

Too many underlings. Spawn more overlords.

        • +1

          …. i can fix that.

          Nuclear Launch Detected ;).

    • student volume ratio is much higher there
software companies can basically charge as high or low as they want and "get away with it"
If people feel $50 is too high go Linux . $50 is almost as cheap as the OS X upgrade as well.

But yeah late 2011/early 12 Windows 8 will be launched so if can wait a year more go for Win8

      • +3

For tangible goods I can see how the population factor comes into play. But for a downloadable software, I think it's just a matter of "I'll charge extra because it's Australia" rather than scale.

        • I think it's just a matter of whether they can get sales or not. If people are still willing to to buy with that high price, why lower the price?

  • Been this price in the student wiki, for about 3 weeks now.

  • go go reactivations with quarterly reinstalls :D

  • I have a Vista machine with OEM serial number but no disk. Can I use this upgrade or will I need an original Vista disk when doing a full reinstall?

    • i would like to know this answer aswell, also my vista has viruses, malware and takes 10 minutes to boot up, will this upgrade fix all this?

      • +1

I need an original Vista disk

No, you just pop the new W7 disk in and select the upgrade option. You will be given a choice of a custom install (which is basically a clean install, so backup first) or an in-place upgrade (which retains all your programs and files).

In place upgrades cannot be performed on different versions of Windows (64 or 32 bit). If you have 32 bit and want to upgrade to a 64 bit for e.g, you must use Custom install. For extra information use this table to see if you can perform in place upgrades

vista has viruses, malware and takes 10 minutes to boot up, will this upgrade fix all this?

Just do a custom install, it will wipe out the viruses, but remember that the custom install also puts all your old files and programs into a directory Windows.old which you can find in the root drive C:.
The malware will probably be swept into that folder so it's best to remove the Windows.old directory after the upgrade has completed.

    FYI:
If you are Faculty of IT student at Monash Uni you can get 2 free copies of the full Win7 professional by going to IT labs and going to http://msdnaa.monash.edu.au/.

I know Engineering can get it too at Monash (I don't know the exact procedure though).

    • Thanks 4 the link! Faculty of med works too

  • This isn't a deal. And it doesn't fluctuate. It's been SOLID at $49.95 for years now. There are threads & forums all over the internet discussing it.

    Here's just one of them:

To me, it's worth no more than 29 A$ ^^

But anyway, have to admit it's been the best release since XP (NT 5.1).

  • i have a amd 64x2 Dual Core Processor 4000+ 2.11ghz 4gb RAM,

Should i choose 32 bit or 64 bit?

    • -2

Get 64 bit so you won't keep thinking about it.

    • +2

      Wow old skool

64 bit of course. There's absolutely no reason for you to go 32 bit.

There are some (rare) situations in which you are better off using 32-bit Windows 7:

      • If you use only 2GB of RAM, and do not plan to upgrade anytime soon. To really take advantage of 64-bit Windows 7, you need minimum 4GB RAM.
      • You have legacy devices like scanners and printers that do not have 64-bit device drivers. 32-bit drivers are not supported under 64-bit Windows 7, so you should make sure all the devices you need to use are compatible with 64-bit.
      • You run old 16-bit applications that were developed for Windows 3.1 or DOS. These won’t run under 64-bit Windows.
      • bugger only just go your advice, im viewing this on a newly installed 32 bit :(

        • Doesn't the disc (or image thereof for official downloaded copies) for certain versions come with both x86 & x64 on it? I just remember hearing that somewhere!

I have a kind employer with a sweet MS employee licencing agreement, so I don't have to purchase OS's anymore! ;)

  • I have a 'free' version of Windows 7. Will this upgrade Windows 7 version still work as a fresh new installation?

    • with a pirated version? are you serious? hell, no!

      • +2

        Get your facts straight.
        You can.

You can only clean install though.

      • You can even upgrade with a blank drive, if it whinges after the first time you install it, you put the disk back in and 'upgrade' again. Hey presto, full install for $49.

        • YeP I've done it twice bow

  • Students can already get a free copy of Windows Server 2008 R2 via Microsoft Dreamspark (just need a .edu email address). It is pretty easy to then config this like a Windows 7 workstation + if your interested you can do server stuff.

$50 is still pretty good but its nothing new.

    • I was under the impression it had limited applications to install on it though, you need to install the server version of your software on it though(which cost much more than buying the single copy of win7)
      ZDnet instructions
      IF YOU DARE!

  • Cannot you edit the ISO and remove the file that checks for a valid current instalation!?

  • does this upgrade include full office?

    • No windows ever includes office.
