This is $20 cheaper than that.

      • I feel sorry for the people who bought it at full price lol

    • +1

How come when price is different lol.

  • +2

Wow. It may actually hit $50 at this rate.

    • +2

      It probably will.

The reviews are… well, not great.

    • I’ll buy it when it’s $50

      • Yeah, the hardware is actually not bad at this price point. The native emulation is trash but it can be hacked for a better experience. Still disappointing that the controllers aren't dual shock but if it's $50, once can't complain all too much.

  • why does it say expired? its still active

    • Cause apparently someone already post it prior to me.

      • +1

Wasn't in the title of the other post so won't be dupe.

  • About to say the same. Perhaps the had wrong expiry date somewhere. Didnt check shipping but still available in multiple stores around Brissie

  • +3

It's only a matter of time until they make a PS2 classic… but I won't need it because I still have a real one that works :)

    • +8

After this clusterf@#k of an attempt, i think not.

      • -1

They could just build an actual PS2 with smaller components.

        • … They already did.

          • @jenna12: As small as the PS1 classic.

            • -2

@smartazz104: To make an actual PS2 the same size as the PS Classic would be impossible, it's restricted by disk size, your comments make no sense. Also, The PS2 Slim is already 5mm thinner than the PSC. If you want to scale to match the width of the PSC, the PS2 would be far too small. All of this and you want space for actual PS2 hardware aswell. And we haven't even began to discuss the cost of producing all their custom chips that are out of production now. @dumazz104 your comments really make no sense.

              • @jenna12: They must have had someone like you on the committee that produced the PSC.

                • -1

@smartazz104: Can you not read/think for even a second? Sure, they COULD make an actual PS2 but slightly smaller, but the disc will be janky out the side, and it'll cost you multiple hundreds of dollars and be an even bigger flop than the PSC, nobody is going to buy a 'Slim 2' with actual hardware for $300+ to save an inch of size and have their disks sticking out the side… By saying they had somebody on the marketing team like me to bother to point out to another employee such as your hypothetical self the ACTUAL PHYSICAL RESTRAINTS let alone the costs with your request is a massive compliment to me, and whoever had your lack of rationality should be fired. Your arrogance and ignorance astounds me.

        • PS2 hardware with the emotion engine is actually rather hard to replicate today. They probably could rebuild it, but I'd wager the cost would be high. I think it's more likely they'll just emulate the system. Which is unfortunate, as it's never as accurate.

Still, if you want the real PS2 experience, buy a PS2.

      • If only they'd selected some of the numerous awesome games from the consoles life!

    • +4

Keep dreaming. Emulating PS2 requires hardware that’s priced out of being a novelty gadget.

  • +5

Worth it for the hardware, these are high quality PS1 replica controllers with USB so you can use them on PC or Android phones.

    • i think you got yourself a deal buddy. if only they were BT

    • -2

      Not DualShock. So useless.

      • +2

Yes I said these are PS1. For DualShock just buy PS3 controllers, already USB compatible and hacked open.

        • +3

But PS1 had DualShock, so it makes no sense not to have included it in. I mean, aside from cost factors.

          • +1

@Munki: Yes, but to me PS1 set the world on fire without DS, so I think Sony made the right call to not include it if it wanted to be absolute with detail. Especially with the origins of it being born from the Super Nintendo.

Lots of people are upset because DS has become a carried forward icon, but again I say PS1 has a better history to tell during the phase without DS.

            • +2

@plmko: I highly doubt that was the case. They were definitely not going with "user experience" in mind when they designed this.

        • For DualShock just buy PS3 controllers, already USB compatible and hacked open.

Given DS3 is almost as expensive on eBay as DS4, I'd just get a DS4 which has native compatibility with Windows. I use my DS4 on PC and it's great, but honestly, I do prefer the Xbox One controller for PC.

          • +1

@p1 ama: DS4 isn't authentic enough for emulators/retro play. For instance I am not sure how you would play Metal Gear 3 without the mushy face buttons giving analogue control. That's why I wouldn't recommend DS4 unless you didn't care too much little details like that.

            • +1

@plmko: Fair enough, maybe I'm just not a stickler for details. I usually use my DS4 for PS1 and PS2 emulation and it's worked really well in my experience. For NES/SNES, I use the 8bitdo SF30 which works really well too.

        • -2

          these are PS1

          As are DualShock controllers….

  • +1

Honestly, more than anything else, I think the one thing that has made me hold off on the PS Classic is having a PS TV doing nothing hidden in the laundry somewhere. That thing is absolutely tiny and can play all the PS1, PSP, and Vita games I want (after whitelisting, of course). Like, why are these mini consoles so big? I got the NES mini the other day and I love the thing it's cutesy and all that but I have a slim PS1 from 2000 half a metre from it and it's honestly not that much bigger, these mini consoles should really be a LOT smaller if you ask me. Like a shitty slim phone from years ago that's worth like 10 dollars can play all these games fine and it manages to do all that while housing a battery, screen, and speakers.

Anyway. I'll pick one up when they're 50 as I've always said, this is yet another step closer. Great deal all in all. Shame the PS TV never caught on though, infinitely better really.

    • +1

If they were smaller, then the gift-coolness factor would drop a lot. They already are probably the minimum size they can make them (snes classic) with the controller port sizes they are using too, without looking silly (it wouldn't be a scaled down snes but a new design then)

    • Shame the PS TV never caught on though, infinitely better really.

It's a great machine, and it was marketed terribly. It's also super valuable now so hold onto yours. I honestly thought they'd just use the PSTV internals in the PSclassic, it would've been a lot smarter.

  • +11

God, each time I see a post for these I cringe that I pre-ordered and paid full price.

Don't buy it. It's landfill garbage.

Games haven't aged well and they lack the charm the Nintendo games have which makes their nostalgia work.

    Avoid.

    • +2

This is exactly right. Pat Contri has made the same point before.

The NES and SNES games offer an experience you dont get anywhere else. Super Mario 3 is still the best 2d platformer ever made. Super Metroid still the best Metroidvania game if you ignore the tedious second-last level. I still like Street Fighter 2 more than Marvel vs Capcom or the later SF games. When I play Yoshi's Island Im still struck by the beauty of it.

But Playstation games are more or less crummier looking versions of present generation games. I have no particular desire to play the original Gran Turismo, the only difference between it and the most recent one is that it looks like arse.

Add the fact that Sony made a terrible mess of the console itself, and I'd say its worth avoiding like the plague.

I have to say though, I'd probably like to see a Dreamcast mini console if they could make a decent fist of it. Most Dreamcasts that have survived to this day sound like cement mixers.

    • I'm kicking myself that I didn't wait for a price drop. But I still enjoyed it, completed every game :).

  • +3

don't buy it boys, wait for till it drops $50.

  • +3

Wait for it to go under $40, then it'll be worth it for the case to stick a Pi in :)

  • If hacked, does it run THPS2 well?

I'd consider it just for that game.

    • +1

Doesn't look like the controller has analog sticks.

      • THPS2 can be played without sticks.

  • Hopefully others like Amazon AU will drop there prices to beat or match this.

  • I still have two fully functional OG PSXs (not PSOne!) in the garage. Might have to dig it up for some Final Fantasy Tactics fun.

    • Wow you actually have a PSX?
If so that's awesome, they are worth a decent price nowadays for a working one.

  • +9

    I’m a simple man. I see 69 in the price, I upvote

  • +5

The concept of this is great, but the execution is poor. Sony (or whoever developed this) couldn't even get the emulation right and some games are running a lower FPS because of PAL region games.

Maybe at $50 it worth it for 2 controllers, the case and hacking it.

    • You do realize that we are PAL region, so it actually makes it more authentic for us.

      • You do realise the POS console still outputs at 60fps, even thought the PAL games are rendering at 50. This mismatch causes stuttering (on top of that from the un-optimised emulator).

There’s nothing authentic about this garbage fire of a product.

  • +5

If it had crash bandicoot, it would sell heaps better.

    • Looks like it'll be $40-$50 here soon

  • -1

I have given mine away for free, along with a few games a number of years ago. No need to be nostalgic and looking back.

  • -1

If you've played a PS1 in the past few years you'll know that the graphics and playability are shit. You'll be unlikely to get 30 minutes of genuine entertainment out of this.

    • +1

A friend and I joyfully replayed THPS2 on original hardware for like 6 hours straight around Christmas time. I also replayed Parasite Eve 2 and AitD4 start to finish a couple of years ago. So, I'll have to disagree with your blanket statement. Perhaps I'm just more tolerant because I remember the graphics and 'playability' from as a kid? I can see how trying to convince a youngster with a PS4 to play PSX for the first time might be difficult though. Also, you have to pick games that were actually good in the first place, lol.

However, I won't be recommending a PS Classic unless they're like 40 bucks, and even then it'll be almost solely for ornamental reasons (or if you're desperate for some basic USB controllers). I prefer physical games over emulated, and many people (myself included) already have an NVIDIA Shield etc for any emu needs. These mini consoles are novelties and decorative. If somebody wants to get this purely for gaming, just get something like a Shield, or go to a garage sale and get some original hardware/games for 15 bucks.

    emulators are cheaper

    • This is an emulator. A free one even.

  • Me: finally decides to bite bullet
