  • Anyone that owns one how does it compare to an apple tv? (and yes I undertsnad they have different OS but just wondering in terms of performance and available apps)

    • I have one but the last ATV i used was just before they included the siri remote. It's actually really good (for me anyway) you have GA out of the box, you can use it for smart features and apps. For apps that arent available, just cast it via it's inbuilt Chromecast Ultra. I also use it to turn off my smart bulbs and switches at night as well as tomorrows forecast before i turn off the tv. Only issue we have found so far is that it's really buggy with Stan app but casting Stan via your phone works just fine.

    • I prefer the Apple TV over the mi box. I have both (unsure if 100% same mi box, it’s the international one that I have).

      Apple TV pluses:
iR support (tv volume control), power control (if your tv doesn’t support hdmi cec, power control uses hdmi cec otherwise)
Amazon prime app out of the box
All the free to air streaming apps (unsure if situation on these has change, they weren’t available on mi box when I last checked a while ago)
MRMC works ok for basic Kodi
Single home screen if you have more than one ATV (mirror installed apps between them all)

      Mi box pluses:
      USB port
      Chrome cast support

      • @davemac Are you saying the Apple TV can act like a chromecast like this Mi box and the Shield etc can? That is, you can cast from another device to the Apple TV using the Chromecast protocol?

        • Not saying that…although you can use the apple version of casting if you have an iPhone…

        • No, mi box supports chromecast. ATV supports AirPlay from IOS devices.

  • Is there a way to cast Prime Video onto this device without mirroring?

    • +1

i assume you could install aptoide tv, and install the prime video from there?
(i've never tried it myself though)

      • Yes, it works like magic!

    • you can sideload the apk

    • I have the Prime app on my $30 Chinese box and it works fine(Stan won't tho as it thinks it is rooted - Stan works through the browser tho - but no Netflix anymore via nay hack). As this box is an Android TV and not officially supported like the Shield is you may not get an icon, but there are ways around that.

If you want a box that just works, the nvidia Shield is really the only option.

  • Anyone owns one has issue with Android 8.1?
I read on the internet that lots of people got their system bricked and make it unusable.

    • mines been ok. it was buggy at the start where YT videos would suddenly stop and the app would close…did that for a few days so i ran a hard reset and it's been working fine since.

it was said in the last mibox tab, and ill raise it again here, just go the vodafone tv for 72 bux….
    https://www.vodafone.com.au/vodafone-tv

    • Does it come with google play store?

      • yeah it's powered by android with GA and all that as well…at the $72 price go Vodafone…it's a ripper price for local stock. Should be able to pick up instore as well

        • Thanks.

          • +1

@Blurayz: So let’s say we go Vodafone and pick it up… how’s it fare against the Shield? I hear everyone praising the Shield and it’s functionality.

That, and to anyone who owns the Vodafone TV, are you able to stream Netflix / Stan at 4K? (Assuming you own the correct subscriptions)

            • @bossmode: Shield I believe is better but also more expensive. I'm just looking for a decent box to run kodi but I just read vodafone tv doesn't support kodi refresh rate switching which killed my appetite for this box. Used similar AMLogic S905X as Xiaomi

              • @Blurayz: I've moved on from Kodi to CinemaHD on my Mibox.

                • @MITM: Surely this is illegal streaming links?

                  • @JuryWheel: Technically it's not illegal to stream, it's illegal to download, reproduce or distribute… So the provider would be in the poo not you.

                • @MITM: Can you please educate me with CinemaHD?

              • @Blurayz: Just bite the bullet and grab a Shield. Everything just works. No matter what other solution you are trying, you are going to have issues with some streaming apps, or missing functions. A PC as a HTPC will get you access to everything, but some streaming services are going to have to use a browser and then you really need a mouse, and it is not as tidy. The last thing keeping me with a PC was multi channel AAC sound, but the Shield can support that and has now replaced the HTPC.

    • why?

does vodafone tv have issues when casting screen from mobiles to its built-in chromecast?

      • +1

Cheaper and does everything this does fine.

    • Does it have built in Chromecast ultra? I'm looking for something to stream kayo in 4k

  • $104 from gearbite ebay store, less with the usual coupons. Mine was delivers in 2 days so how is this a deal?

    • if it's posted here, with no negs, that makes it a deal … 🙄

  • How does this play vs normal android tv boxes?
FWIK no box has 10bit hardware support, so will stutter. My "4k" box stutters on 1080 10bit.
    Even w/o any apps installed

  • was waiting 2 months for my xaiomi mi tab from Gearbest before i cancelled it, they kept telling me it would arrive in a few days, but it never did. ended up ordering it from ali express…

  • Can anyone recommend a good Iptv service to use on this media player was pretty happy with premium Iptv on a trial but could not get it working on the media player

  • I just received my Mecool M8S PRO L (https://www.aliexpress.com/item/MECOOL-M8S-PRO-L-TV-BOX-Andr…) and hooked it up yesterday…. appears to be very good.. 3gb/32gb version - fast response, tested kodi/plex and a few games (asphalt 8 and a beach buggy game) - everything has been flawless… it's running android tv os…

    • As Long as you don't need the Certified (netflix etc hd and above)stuff anybox (912) will just about do the above
The New 905x2 is doing the rounds will go to A9 most likely, 912 will not move ahead much more.

  • I've just bought two of these and I immediately realised what an absolute PITA it is to install apps on it, including Google Chrome.

Can anyone point me in the direction of a good 'idiot's guide'?

    • What are you trying to do exactly? I downloaded apps like YouTube kids, Stan, Kayo etc easily. Just Went to the google play store and speak into the controller mic to search

      • I’ve installed KODI, sideloader and a few apps from Aptoide but I need to install an app from tinyurl for my iptv subscription.

I’ve downloaded both Chrome and Firefox and both just search when I type in the URL rather than just go to it…….not resulting in going where I need to go. This has never happened before and it’s driving me nuts.

I just wish there was a way of installing stock android tv over Xaiomi’s crappy, restrictive version.

    • +1

Im gonna say it, should have the vodafone TV box, piece of cake!

      • Yeah, I fell for one of these boxes before and while the hardware is undoubtedly good, the 'locked-down' nature of them makes installation of certain apps/programs a real pain. Can't believe I was stupid enough to buy another two!

I managed to download what I needed by installing the Gmail application and sending links to myself. Worked a treat but the fact that you cannot display anything but a few 'authorised' apps on the main dashboard is not good. For example, to locate my IPTV or Chrome, you've got to go via Side Loader. Xiaomi must have locked these things down really well because I'd have expected a stock firmware to have been installed by someone by now.
