  • Considering buying one of these to help my son, who suffers from allergies/asthma. Could anyone provide feedback on the effectiveness of this unit for this purpose and confirm if it is loud?

    • +2

I have the Pro version which I bought from Kogan for $299. My partner suffers from allergies/asthma too and it did help her alot. There are 3 modes: Auto, Night and Manual. The auto and night mode always super quiet and can't hear it at all.
If you choose the manual mode and set the coverage to max, then you might hear the fan. I always keep it on Auto mode :)
Here is a comparison of ver 2 vs 2S vs Pro:
      https://c.76.my/Malaysia/xiaomi-mijia-mi-air-purifier-2-2s-p…

I chose the Pro mainly to cover my whole apartment :) so I don't have to worry about moving it to from the living room to the bedroom.

      Hope that helps!

      • "2S vs Pro"
so the differences are just area coverage? not about feature or something else?

        • Just coverage :) I have 1 bedroom apartment which is about 60sqm. So I just went for the Pro :)

    • +11

I have 4 of them running around the house.
My wife became very allergic to animals about 3 years ago. This is tough for her because she loves animals and we have so many.

I swear by these units and my wife does also.

I change the filters every 6 months, I keep an eye out for deals on them and buy in bulk.

This is a pretty decent price for this unit.

We run the unit on auto and they very rarely of ever kick up to high speed anymore. But even then it sounds like a pedestal fan on low anyway.

      • +4

4! oh my god you are really xiaomi fans :) kidding. thanks for the review

        • +1

Haha. I think it's the only xiaomi product I own.

Largeish house with lots of animals. But they work so it's worth it.

      • +1

Do you only run them when the windows are closed?

And have you tried just vacuuming the filters (with a HEPA vacuum)? How much less effective is this?

        • We regularly have doors open in the house and we have no issues with that.

And no I've never vacuumed the filters. I have no problems spending the money I do on the filters as it's all worth it.

      • +1

Would you say you need to change the filters every 6 months?

        • Every house is different. With rabbits, up to 4 cats, birds and dogs we struggle to get 6 months but we make them last.

My wifes allergies increase as the filters get towards the end of their life.

      • +2

I've got 4 as well that I run due to the amount of dust that seeps into the house.
Think it helps as I've noticed my father coughing less. I normally replace mine every year and just vacuum/blows the filters outside every 3months.

    • Thanks for the feedback amir aljaberi and perthjay85! Sounds like it is worth a shot.

    • My partner would get allergies, waking up with puffy eyes.
Since purchasing this unit, she has been a lot better.
As for sound, it's very quite when on auto mode.

Got one of these and a Blueair.
Blueair destroys this unit in filtering capability, however it cost about $600.

      How do I know?
Spent $465USD buying one of these: Air Quality Monitor, https://www.amazon.com/DC1700-Battery-Operated-Quality-Acces…

Have a look at this video to see it in action. Really interesting to compare air quality indoor (filtered) vs outdoor air quality:
      https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=wpB-2-VoLi4
^ In above video you will see that indoors, his particle counter never hits above 100, which is about what I get with a Blueair in an average sized room.
When I switch it to the Xiaomi Mi Smart Air Purifier, I get about 350-450, which is ranked as "Fair"

Second hand cigarette smoke particle counter test <- This is why NOONE should EVER smoke in their house if they have kids/pets. Spoiler: Particle counts go over 40,000+
      https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=xW5uIUxiOsY

Dylos monitor goes absolutely NUTS when measuring bushfire:
      https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=bhy9qkD5Adg

  • "Filter replacement" can we just clean&wash them or must buy? if buy then not good, expensive maintenance costs

    • +1

You are right that it's expensive. But if you bulk buy the replacement filters it's worth it.

Be careful with ebay however as I've purchased a few generic versions which were quite flimsy.

Worst case scenario is kogan generally have them for $39 each.

      • Just curious, where would you purchase these in bulk? Kogan charges $9 delivery so $48 total each, on Ebay I can only find cheaper ones shipped from HK (questionable if they are originals or not).

        • I keep an eye out on ebay and also on here. They don't come up very often, so I suggest buying in bulk when it happens.

Gearbest have good deals once a year or so.

  • So I just want to ask a few things. My sister have a long coat cat and during hot season, we can see the fur flying around. Should this unit pick up the fur and small dusts and help reducing dusts around the room?

    Thanks yoi

    • It will certainly help. But it will only help in the room that it's placed in.

They don't have a huge coverage area.

Maximum room size would be about 5 x 5m roughly.

    • +1

Better off with a robot vacuum. They have a filter built in

  • -1

Using these unit will make life easier inside the 4 walls.
But what it does is reduce your immunty to fight out the allergens and onece you are out you will be more miserable as your body can't fight it.
Unless you are walking around with air purifying mask.

    • +7

You will need to provide a citation.

Allergies is not something your body "fights" off. If you are allergic to something it means your body is trying to "fight" off something that isn't really harmful.

      Typically allergies are incurable.

      https://www.mayoclinic.org/diseases-conditions/allergies/sym…

So yes, it will make people's lives easier indoors if they suffer from allergies to airborne particles, but it won't reduce their ability to "fight" their allergies.

    • You generally wouldn't be buying one of these units unless you had an allergy anyway.

  • Have been using this for probably 6 months.

My filter is around 80% and when opened it doesn't seem to have that much dust in it.

Maybe my room isn't that dusty??

  • why no cashbacks from CR or SB?

    • They both suspended cash back late last year "until further notice"

  • +2

I'm so glad they included an OLED screen

  • Why do we need this in Australia

    • You most likely don't need to change the filter that often. Can get 3x life out of 1.

But when you cook, open windows etc, it fires off.

So, although you might not need it as such, it does more good having it than not.

    • +2

It's better suited for people with allergies here in Australia.
If you're living in cities like Bangkok or Delhi then it's suited for anyone who wants to breath clean air.

  • I have the older version, and must say, it's pretty good.

    Tempting to get another one.

The app can be frustrating as hell though.

    • Is there anything on you can do on the App that you cannot to manually?

      • +1

Yeah, check the levels, the old one doesn't have a LED indicator, so have to check air quality via app. Also tells you temperature, humidity and comfort levels.

Not sure if this LED one shows you all that.

Once you get the app working, it's great.

        Initial setup is a pain.

Are these good at collecting dust in a bedroom?

    • it helps but its not great

  • I have a small apartment - thinking of placing it in the carpeted bedroom or should I put it closer to the kitchen? Timber floors in living area.. Will this also reduce the dust particles?

  • Thanks OP.

    Good reviews and good price.
Been thinking about getting an air filter for a while… so pulled the trigger on this deal.

  • Sold out?

    I can see 0 available / 244

    dang it!

    • Oh yikes… I must have got the last one then.
      Sorry mate!

  • Thanks, but out of stock now :(

  • +1

Generic filters available for these on the cheap?

  • I have two of the new oled ones and one older one. I really rate them. Spray anything near them and they ramp up the fan speed till the air is filtered.

  • Got four dogs and one cat, doubt this thing will help much. well, it might but just gotta to change the filter more often than scheduled.

  • +1

FWIW Just set mine up. Came complete with white matching aussie plug, which was good. Two minor issues - first one was I could not connect to the device via the app. Could however connect to the wifi on the thing itself. Then worked out that it only supports 2.4ghz and my mobile was connected to my 5ghz ap. So got an old mobile and used that instead. Second issue was that after configuring it, it was coming up with a "cannot initialise" error message when I clicked on the device within the app. I could switch it on/off from the main screen but not get into the device itself. The issue there was that I had to change to the Singapore server (remove device, switch to Singapore, add back in). At that point I could get into it, and update the firmware. I tried switching it back to China but error still there so…. I've been using Xiaomi devices for a few years now, and I recall there were some issues with the Singapore server which was why I used China - but maybe I'll start to move my devices over now.

Anyhow, as for the thing itself - all good so far. On the auto setting you can barely hear it running - can of course hear the fan if you put your head close to it, but any decent distance away and there's nothing. Currently reporting a PM2.5 estimate of "001" in the bedroom I have it in (my daughter has asthma, so thought this might help keep the dust levels there down). Plan is, if this helps a little, would be to later upgrade to the slightly better hepa filter.

    • Hi, Just set mine up too. It's my second one (I have the Mi Air 2 as well), and a bunch of other Xiaomi devices. Haven;t had any real issues setting them up, other than the RoboRock s50 that does not work on the China servers.
I have the same issue, i can;t get the device to work on the China server, fine on the Singapore server though. But as i have all my other 27 devices on the china server i really dont want to have to move them all.

If you find a solution to getting it working on the China server, let me know.
There's a few threads on the Mi forums but nothing has worked for me. i think the ones we received are region locked for 'Outside' of China. Like the RoboRock i have.
Because it came with an EU power cord (Where my Mi Air 2 came with a China/AU cord) maybe it's region locked? Just a theory.

      • Yep - this is the international version, so locked. You can connect it to the app, but can't go into the device itself which is not ideal. I think I'll just start to shift my devices - about the same number as you so a pain, but such is life.

Otherwise happy with this. The initial reading of 001 was just it getting sorted. It settled on 25 and has slowly gone down to 3 now which is pretty decent. Have managed to link it into my HA setup so can see the AQI over time….

      • Dang. Fortunately the first device I moved over from China to Singapore - a hub - came up with the same error. So if you have a mix of Chinese and International devices, you may need to login separately to manage them. Annoying, but not a biggie for me as I have them all in my Home Assistant (https://www.home-assistant.io/) system so use them via that - and it doesn't care.

And FWIW the AQI in my daughters room has been hovering between 1 and 2 since 10pm.

        • hmm lucky i only have 2 xiaomi yeelight and been using mihome app, region set to singapore and its working fine with google voice assistant. should be no problem adding this when its arrives later today. but your link hass.io looks good too

          • @CyberMurning: The issue is probably for those people (such as myself) who have bought one or more "5 in 1 kits" with a hub and a handful of other sensors. My yeelights are fine as well. Yep hass.io is really good - it's a little bit of a learning curve to setup, but worth it.

  • Arrived, setup with the mi home app and run okay but reading says 001.
Anyone has different reading ie above 001?

Also, I can add/control my yeelights under Google assistant setting, but not this purifier. Am I correct?

    • Same here. When starting up, it's around 020 or so, and down to 001 after a while even though I can see the dust particle. Can't feel the suction of the fan, only air coming out on the top. Is it normal?

  • I haven't received mine yet. I am still waiting for the notice that it has been sent.
