    ”worry-free driving environment”

Obviously excludes Sydney and Melbourne’s roads then!

    • +4

      The other drivers don’t worry….rules, courtesy….no worries

    • I don't know about that for Melbourne. In Melbourne if you're caught in the wrong lane, someone will often let you squeeze in. In Sydney it's more like "Lane's taken."

sorry, it was a lazy cut and paste job, for your reading entertainment

Still using my one of these for quite some time now. Great little cam.

    • +1

Same here I've used it since last summer and found that it's quite good value dash cam which still records quite decent image or recording.

Night recording isn't the best but visible.

The most annoying part is that it gives a warning in Chinese when you hit a little bit bump on the road as well as the high beam from the incoming traffic. I found it a bit annoying when you drive on the highway.

      • Yep that warning annoys me I might have to do the modification of unhooking the speaker.

        • I flashed a custom firmware onto my one. It changed all voices to English. You do miss out on voice control though but I can't speak Chinese anyway :) just do a google search for it. It was pretty easy to do.

      • I think this one is the international version so those annoying alerts are in English. Mine randomly says “ Volume is switched on” and occasionally it warns me that the sd card needs to be formatted. That’s more of a concern as at that point the recordings have stopped. I would be interested to know from others whether they successfully save a video to their phone (iPhone for me) as it never quite works. Instead I swap cards and copy to my laptop.

        • I've been able to transfer videos from the dashcam to my phone using the app over the local wifi. I'm on an iPhone.

        • Saving to the phone worked fine on my iPhone when I tested it out a while back.

        • I got a 64 GB sd card in mine, and have changed the settings to just overwrite the old videos so I don't have to bother formatting. If I know I need a video, I'll make sure to download it to my phone sooner rather than later of course.

      • That should only be the Chinese (not International as in this deal) version though, right?

I mostly say the same for the price except:

The voice commands are fairly unreliable and sometimes falsely trigger from music that's playing. On rare occasions it's falsely triggered from random conversations. This is annoying when it starts causing settings to change like sound recording on/off. I've never had the voice commands actually work when I need to when driving for taking a photo or saving a recording. There is no other way of making these happen except for the long slow setup and fumbling through app via wifi, which is not an option when driving. In the latest and only update in the past year, they've given the feature to disable voice commands, which I now use

Video quality suffers the faster you're driving. At 60 kph you're fine, but at 100kph video is fairly pixelated and zero chance of legible number plates and some street signage. Still perfectly good for who hit who though

The viewing and downloading of videos via the app/wifi is very slow. Pulling out the sdcard and chucking it into a PC is much easier

Issue exists that if power cuts out or drops below some level during startup, the device won't start, and it lights up red, not working. You have to unplug the device from power and plug it back in to get it to restart. This issue can be worked around by using a more reliable power source when your car starts up. For me I moved the power from the cigarette lighter to the USB on my radio

Also it's made for left hand drive vehicles. The indicator light/button is on the left of the device, hidden from a driver on the right

For the price is probably good for your first dashcam so you can work out how things work and what you want

      • I found the "Take a picture" and "Start a video recording" was triggered when listening to podcasts where the person had an American accent. I never had luck activating it but try it with an American accent. It worked for me. Strange but true

Built in battery….not sure if that is a good idea for summer here.

    • Put it away in glove box when not in use (unless you want it running while car is parked.) My wife does it all the time.

      • Isn't that hotter?

        • +3

Hot that his wife takes care of things or hotter than the sun?

        • Why would the glove-box be hotter than direct sunlight?

      • +5

No way am I disconnecting and stashing a dashcam every time I stop the car

    • +3

I've had mine since at least before the 2018/19 Sydney summer and it has worked without fail every time I have driven. And it wasn't exactly an average temps kind of summer either.

    • +1

I've had mine since November 2017 and had no issues with it over the two Summers. My previous Mini 0801 also had a built in battery and that lasted 4.5 years until it died and it wasn't the battery that gave out.

      • Same, I have had mines since November 2017 only difference is that it's a Chinese edition with a flashed English voice firmware. It handles the heat a lot better than my previous dash cam (Viofo A119S) which used a capacitor rather than a battery. The A119S melted in the Australian summer, the buttons were all warped and I could not use them any more.

    • +1

Mines survived the 49C heat in Adelaide so I assume it's fine.

    • what's the problem? Battery dies or explodes or what?

  • +3

    You deserve owning it.

    Brilliant.

Got one of these a while back but found it was not recording properly (LED turns red). Turns out that it doesn't like the accessory power dropping momentarily during engine start in my current model HiLux SR5 (Smart Entry/Start).

I've since switched it to sourcing power from the interior light circuit instead, which doesn't cut out during start, and it is happily recording properly. The interior light circuit in this HiLux along with newer Toyotas has a battery saver function and will cut the power about 15 minutes after the vehicle is switched off. So it's kind of like having a short-term parking mode.

    • +1

I had the exact same issue so I switched power from the cigarette lighter to the USB on my radio. It takes a few seconds longer before it's started, but haven't had the issue since

i have got this for about a year & half and very happy with it. This thing works really well and has good picture/sound quality. Wifi is only suitable to access recorded media on the phone and to do all other settings through its app.

Attached Day time and night time recordings to compare:

(Select Video quality 1080P from Vimeo Player to watch actual recorded quality)
    Day: https://vimeo.com/318790432

    Night: https://vimeo.com/318791864

    • Hey thanks for the mini review and sharing that footage - very neat dashcam

    • Hard to tell if compression is vimeo or the device, but on that day vid it doesn't show up a parked car rego too well.

  • I got this from aliexpress last month for somewhere around $45. So 54 is not a bargain.
I got the international version so no chinese language.
However, i have struggle sticking it on windscreen, followed instruction which asked to stick a electrostatic sheet on windscreen first and put camera on that. Which was big fail. Spoiling my original 3m tape that was on camera mount. So looking to get new 3m tape.

I loved it when I purchased my first Xiaomi product.

After plugging it in and powering it on, it started yelling at me in mandarin through the speaker.

I don’t know what it was saying but sounded very authoritarian. What I imagine a stern Siri would sound like in the communist China home country.
