    • Yeah Same, Says $35 for me.

You could try to use the listing for a price match with JBs? Just don't mention it's a WA chain… I've got JBs to price match a Billy Guyatts price before, even though they're not in WA.

  • How's this compare to the BES920BSS?

A quick look at the specs suggests that this isn't even on the same planet.

It is a thermoblock-style machine (rather than a boiler). Moreover the 920 is dual boiler.

I have the 920 machine (& a Rancilio Silvia) and it does a most admirable job when combined with a decent grinder.

This looks like a nicer design effort based on entry level thermoblock machines. If you're up for that, it'll most likely do a decent job of producing a couple of coffees at a time.

    • Its a toy compared to the 920.

I had the duo-temp (baby brother to this one) before upgrading to the bes920. It was a good machine and I enjoyed what I was able to achieve with it. It has some advantages over the bes920 such as faster heat up and smaller size. The main difference I found was the infuser took longer to steam milk compared to the 920. In terms of flavour I can’t say that the differences are worth the price tag difference - the duo temp and infuser already both have PID control and pre infusion, which are big upgrades from older machines like the bes800. I’ve had amazing cups out of the duo temp, and terrible ones out of the bes920 - getting your grind right, and tamping correctly will help you get a great cup out of either machine. Yes the portafilter is smaller in diameter. The infuser has a pressure gauge which was one thing I would have liked on the duo temp. Still was very happy with duo temp and if I could undo it and get it back, I would not be unhappy.

That being said - you can definitely get a better cup out of a good grinder and the infuser, than a cheap grinder and the bes920, so make sure you’re not cutting corners there!

Pretty nice piece of kit for $284. You don't need to spend a thousand bucks ++ to make a good cup of joe.

It's not a toy. It's just not a dual boiler machine, so you won't be able to texture milk and extract coffee at the same time, and it looks like it used a smaller diameter portafilter.
These are the features that I think make it stand out for $299 though.
PID temperature control that is adjustable. What PID control does is provide stability of the brew temperature, which should give you repeatable coffee extraction.
Pressure gauge, this gives you feedback on how your tamp and grind are. You can make minor adjustments until your extraction is in the zone.
Thermocoil water heating, to me looks like a nicer way of getting than older thermoblock approaches. It's compact and heats up fast.
Magnetic coffee tamp is always at the ready just like the one on the BES920.
It's a clean compact design that takes up much less bench space than the BES920.
I could work with one of these machines easily if my 920 went out of action.

It's a nice machine. Upgraded from a Sunbeam EM5600 that I had for 3 years. This one (BES840) has both dual and single wall filters. Also, 54mm filters, not the 51mm, so proper size. Best price I got (thanks to Ozb) was $345 from a Myer sale price applying an ebay 20% code (June 2018). Happy so far. Froths well, pours good coffee. The 870 has a built in grinder, but I get my coffee ground per 250g, so stays fresh. At $299+shipping ($30.15 to VIC) beats my orig price, which no one has beaten since June. 920 is a diff league, and price bracket. Tamper is metal too.

  • I’m a coffee ignoramus, but my wife has been wanting a Breville 870. Is the only difference between the two the in-built grinder?

    • +1

Yep and the size of the drip tray, and maybe water tank.

      • +2

Thanks OP (and svenson), great price even with $30 delivery to Melbourne - bought one for my wife!

  • Why does this say expired when you can still buy it?

    • Updated to ADST.

      • Sweet. Is this a good deal/compelling reason to upgrade from my $180 Breville?

        • +1

I can't answer as I haven't looked into coffee machines recently - only shared the deal as it looked like a decent discount for this machine.

pete2 gives a good summary above - seems decent for the price; there are better ones out there but they're more expensive. Maybe have a look at a couple of reviews that go into the features in a lot of detail (like this one) to see if it's worth it for you?

Only thing is I'm not sure if the deal with be active after midnight AWST, so that doesn't give you much time to look at whether it's worth the upgrade…

(And it might be active after midnight, just unsure as there was no time for the end of this Sunday sale on the email or online)

    TIL Retrovision is still around.

    • retrovision closed down when people realised retro is no longer cool, retravision however is still around

  • Anyone had any indication from Retravision as to when these are likely to be back in stock/shipped?

    • +1

Apparently next date stock will be at their shipping warehouse is 8/3.

      • Thanks, I got the same message yesterday.
