I have this phone and it's a very decent phone.

However when Redmi Note 7 was announced, it made me sick to my stomach.

If you don't care about waiting for global variant of Redmi Note 7 or prefer actual Band 28, then this phone is a great choice

    • I'm also considering between these two phones. What features would I miss out on if choosing the Mi 8 Lite?

Purely on specs, I see the Redmi Note 7 has these extra:

      • IR blaster
      • 3.5 mm phone jack
      • larger battery (4000 vs 3350 mAh)
      • Check the GSMarena review for full details on what else. I used to have the OG Mi Max which is same battery life as the Note 7 now so having to charge more often is a bit of a pain for me. Cos I use my phone quite heavily.

    • How is this compared to max 3

  • this or nokia 8 grey?

    • +2

Nokia phones are on Android One. That's a big plus.

      • Not Nokia 8. It's not Android One, Sirrocco is.

        • +1

Bummer. I'd still recommend the Nokia though. Nokia have been good with Android updates. MIUI… they're alright, but not as good as Nokia.

          • @BadGiraffe: If you want android one, you could try the Xiaomi A2. Not sure how it compares to this phone but I own that as well, currently running Pie.

            • @soan papdi: does the a2 have band 28 and nfc ?

              • +1

@garage sale: Negative to both. I actually bought this in India when my Nokia 8 became unusable. It still shows 4G on rare occasions, not sure what band it is picking for that. My CC doesn't support Google pay, so I don't miss NFC either.

Maybe if you bought any Australian stock of the A2, it might support B28. Please verify for yourself.

                • @soan papdi: Not aware of any Mi A2's of any kind that has B28.

As I purchased one late last year, my searches would/should have discovered that as that was my main missing feature that almost stopped me from getting it.

            • @soan papdi: Tempting. Redmi Note 7 though…

        • Incorrect. I own a Nokia 8 and it is on Android One. Currently running the latest security update on Oreo. I was very happy with the phone but it now has the infamous split screen problem (vertical line, half the screen is dead) though touch works on it. Have to claim on warranty

          • +1

@soan papdi: Incorrect, Nokia 8 is not.
            https://www.android.com/one/

Nokia 8 SIROCCO is Android One, not Nokia 8. Funnily, if you have Nokia 8 and still Oreo you don't have the latest update. Nokia 8 already has Pie, Nokie 8 Sirocco Pie is still on Beta.

            • @Bigboomboom: My Nokia 8's screen died and I've not updated it in the last 2-3 months. I can see the "android one" banner when the phone boots. So I have no idea why it is not listed on the android website. Take that as you will.

Also I mentioned it is running latest security update on Oreo, didn't say it was running Pie.

              • @soan papdi: Just checking to see if your phone is a Nokia 8 or a later Nokia 8 Sirocco with the curved screen edges and a 5.5" screen?

                • @ozhunter68: It's not sirocco because I bought mine in Dec 2017. Sirocco wasn't out then. However can't recall the exact HMD model. It was either ta-1052 or ta-1004.

                  • @soan papdi: The two phones have some big differences. The Nokia 8 has 5.3" screen and front fingerprint/home button, the Nokia 8 Sirocco has a 5.5" screen with rear fingerprint button.

If you purchased phone in 2018 then Must be a Nokia 8. Settings/About phone/somewhere there should have exact model number.

                    • @ozhunter68: Yeah mine has a fingerprint reader in the front. And it is 5.3". I prefer the front really. Can respond to notifications without lifting the phone.

                      • @soan papdi: You were correct on the Nokia 8 and not the Sirocco. Sorry to Doug t you, just never heard of Android One on those models, but read somewhere Nokia wanted to bring .most of their phones to Android One.

I really like the Nokia 8 for below $350, especially like you, I prefer the front fingerprint ( have a Moto G5+ with same, although use only for home and back/recent apps, not fingerprint lol ), I believe Nokia can also act as home button.

People go on about big top and bottom bezels, but I prefer that as easier to hold in landscape and don't accidently touch unwanted parts as often.

Wow, now that I know some models have Android One for the 8, I will have to go on the hunt. If you can find what exact model number yours is, much appreciated.

                        • +1

@ozhunter68: I had reset my phone completely in anticipation of my warranty claim. Now I have to set it up again to see the settings menu, sorry! Can't confirm the model exactly. If it drops to $350, it would be an insanely good deal.

I can tell you I purchased it from Mobile City's eBay store, maybe you could check with them:
                          https://www.ebay.com.au/str/mobilecitiestore

                          • @soan papdi: Thanks for your info. Looking at mobilecity's ebay store they only go up to the Nokia 7.1 and no longer stock any of the 8 variants.

Bad luck with your faulty phone, what went wrong? If you got the AU stock single sim variant, it shouldn't be hard to chase that down. So as you boot up, the phone showed a Android One logo, probably same/similar to my 6.1.

@ozhunter68: Apparently a known problem with Nokia 8, half the screen dies. There's a vertical line and for me the left side is just like the static you see on TV. It responds to touch but of course the phone is unusable. They've initiated the RMA process, let's see how it goes

                              • @soan papdi: Good luck with that. Maybe I'll not go down the Nokia 8 path then and keep using my Nokia 6.1 and HTC 10 which are both working 100% and good enough for me anyway.

                                • +1

@ozhunter68: Just to close the thread, MobileCiti were very good with handling this and I've received a replacement Nokia 8 from the manufacturer.

                                  • @soan papdi: Great to hear for you that MobiCity helped to get you a replacement Nokia 8 in good working order.

Also good to hear for all of us of the service follow up from MobiCity and from Nokia Australia.

Have you got 24 mths warranty?

                                    • +1

@ozhunter68: I can't recall to be honest. Have to check. It was less than 13 months old when it had the issue.

  • Do they charge GST ? Some of the Chinese sellers dropped charging GST. Gearbest don't charge any GST. Pity though that gst makes it a deal-breaker otherwise a good price atm. Last time they had this one for $209 on Black Friday

When you go further into the purchase process Banggood add the GST. It does cruel a good deal.
Expect delays with some suppliers now as they have their CNY break… around 10 days for some.

AliExpress adds gst(tax) for every item you buy.. but still costs less than eBay on most items…

  • Wouldnt the one at eglobalcentral be cheaper then?
    https://www.eglobalcentralau.com/xiaomi-mi-8-lite-4gb-64gb-d…

    • Costs $309 delivered, special pricing only for Black colour

      • Yep, depending on what postcode you have the eglobalcentralau is cheaper, an extra $23+- for marginally regional 2483 postcodes. So this listing is cheaper for some.
