  • Is this hard wired or has plug?

Check the specs. Built-in Driver with Flex & Plug

Most come with a plug and driver built in these days.

FYI, JD Lighting are also selling these on eBay but with free shipping.
There are also complaints about them being slow shipping or no shipping.

You will also need an electrician to install a surface socket for the LED lights to plug into.
Or DIY using a Melec Blind Snake Rapid Quick*:

    • By law still needs to be done by electrician :-)
    • Haven't seen those Blindsnakes before. Great idea and not too expensive.

    • Just have to watch out you haven't reversed the L and N if you're in the middle of a run :)

  • How would a blindsnake work on an existing connection that's being upgraded? You really need something that goes at the end of a wire not just tapping into it. Good product but not really for this situation.

Rather go with something like this, especially if I'm forking out for a sparky or not ;)

    • Issue is it wouldn't as it typically terminates on the end. Really good for new installs.

My guess is you can tap it in the middle or the end so it would be fine either way.

      See install instructions:
      https://melec.com.au/wp-content/uploads/2018/08/Blindsnake_i…

Only confusion is if they are insulation safe…can touch and be covered with insulation and if they are fixable or left loose in ceiling? The Clipsal 413QC comes with a nail plate (413NPQC) for fixing.

      • Oh yeah. See how it works now.

      • You're right but I guess it's overkill if someone is planning to tap it at the end. Much cheaper sockets would effectively do the same job. Also I'm not convinced there would be a huge market for this outside the average DIY-ers dabbling in (illegal) work (I'm a Darwinist so might be in that group :)) The additional cost doesn't really justify the few mins it's going to save a sparky to do the job. It's a clever product but I feel it's at the wrong pricepoint. I'm happy to be corrected.

        • Could save a a lot of time for new house or building wiring. DIY-ers will love it as it’s tool free and takes the guess work out of it. Apparently it’s insulation safe and can be left loose in ceiling.

          • @MuddyClear: But a DIYer isn't going to wire a new house?

        • These should retail for $1.50 each. If there website is correct.

These sort of downlights are really only suitable for somewhere like a toilet where the quality of light doesnt matter. The led chip is extremely close to the lens on these and they produce a lot of glare if you are looking along the ceiling. Spend the extra cash and get a fitting that has the led chip recessed back into the fitting. They look more stylish and the glare is far less.
