Telstra 2018 iPad Plan $29/Month for 24 Months with 10GB Data Per Month

2790

Seems a good deal to me. $29 per month for 24 months. 32g 6th gen iPad with 10gig of data per month then throttled to 1.5mbps. So that's $696 for the cellular iPad (currently $667 at officeworks) and 240g of data over the 2 years.

Plus I got $150 cashback through my work run cashback site, ymmv but that took my total down to $546.

got that in writing? if you do you'd still have to take it to court after the tio had done nothing….

        • +1

Yeah I got it in writing

          • @69 dollar dealz: keep it safe cuz Telstra don't give a flying ….

          • +1

@69 dollar dealz: I have trouble trusting Telstra these days. Last time I made them put it in writing that I would keep my discounts if I upgraded and surely enough the discounts dropped off. I had to take the email transcript into a Telstra shop and we still had to fight the call centre for an hour to make them honour the deal.

            • @Brick Tamland: Well that's where I'm at.

I got it in writing in a transcript and put my order through.

              Fingers crossed no issues

              • @69 dollar dealz: well sooner or later there will because Telstra are just plain shonky as hell.

the real problem is the libs and a total lack of regulation. They couldn't sell water in a desert and make money - they'd just end up setting such a high price everyone would die or leave - oh right that's their plan for Australia…

    • You should sign up to belong, when you run out you get throttled and if you want to buy a top up urgently you get 2gb for $10

      • No more than $1/GB on the forums here.

  • +3

Got this deal in December. 128GB model for $34 pm

  • throttled to 1.5mbps that be quick enough for watching twitch, youtube and netflix etc still?

    • -1

      Lol no

    • 240p yes.

1.5Mbps was good in 2000. Now, if you're shaped to 1.5, it becomes an email checking device.

      • I would say 480P, codecs are pretty good these days.

    • at 360p

    • It’s not that bad for SD Netflix.
OPTUS offer the unlimited streaming and I can watch Netflix fine
I’m tempted to get this deal though.
As it’s 1.5mbps across the board.
Then I can watch unlimited twitch, albeit low quality but sometimes I just like to listen to them talk shit

Looks like cannot take the sim out and put it in a 4G Wifi device (such as MF910V Telstra 4GX Wi-Fi) to share the internet.
"Using your SIM - You cannot use your SIM in a mobile handset or a mobile broadband device to access mobile data. If you do this, we will block access to mobile data from that device."

    • +1

wondering if any has tried and does it work anyway?
also does anyone know if this ipad can tether?

      • keen to know this too

    • +1

What about an older ipad? I wouldn't mind a 10G/month plan for cheap after selling off the new ipad.

      • I would assume any iOS device would work as they'd download a carrier profile and that's how it would allow the data through

Presumably if no file was downloaded then that's how they block the access?

I could just be talking crap of course, so don't take my word for it haha, but I would bet any iPad would work for sure (SIM isn't linked to IMEI)

        • reading their words, blocked access would be for that device only.
So not a big deal, it's not like they block everything.

    • I have a work mobile broadband sim - stops working as soon as it's put in a mobile, don't know how they do it, must be based on an IMEI prefix? Unblocks and starts working a few minutes after (so not immediate) back in a mobile broadband device.

Likely your work mobile broadband sim is on "Plans you CAN’T SIM Swap on"

        • could also be that the sim card does not operate like a normal mobile broadband sim. i had one of these which had to connect to a work server to provide data/connectivity.

    If this is an ipad with cellular capability, would it be more worthwhile to;

    1) sign up for this deal or

    2) buy outright with a credit card that comes with a 2 year price protection policy?

I don't care about the data, just keen on a tablet… and not great at keeping up with new Apple/ipad release stuff

    • Which card is giving you a 2 year price protection policy.

      • +1

Coles Rewards Mastercard, prior to the Citibank takeover. New customers can't get it anymore, only existing customers who had already opted in have it still.

I have it, and it's awesome. Saved a bucketload through products reducing in price after purchase.

        • opt in?

Do you need to opt in to activate this "price protection"?

I have this coles mastercard, but only use it for shopping in coles :(

          • @aec: And you need to pay a fee which is a percentage of your statement balance (to avoid this pay of your card before the statement comes)

          • @aec: Yep, it's part of a bigger package called Account Cover Plus, which has 2 year price protection as part of it. Unfortunately, even existing cardholders can't get it anymore if you didn't already have it, is my understanding.

You needed to opt in either during sign up, or by calling them, as @spaceflight mentioned, they charge 1% of the closing statement balance for the privilege.

I just make sure I proactively transfer funds a few days before the statement is due to be generated to make the statement zero, and thus I don't have to pay for the insurance.

            • @aleayr: I also have opted in for the account cover plus on my card, and I think the 1% fee is most likely due to the repayment benefits (life, tpd, unemployment). Essentially they have thrown in the shopper’s benefits for free, which is really good. There is no minimum so normally I am not too worried of paying off the entire outstanding balance before statement date.
Another thing I have noticed is that they will pay you repair cost based on your quotation rather than final invoice, so theoretically you can choose not to repair the item and keep the cash. You can also get a quote from a more expensive repairer and carry out the actual repair elsewhere. I am not sure if that is against their PDS but that seems to be how it works.

        • Do you use it much for electronics?

See i've barely used the price protection so with the high turnover of tech these days i dunno whether or not to follow through as i'm scared of forgetting to check back on pricing…

          • +1

@blueyez: Yeah I use it for all the phones I buy because I know the price is going to drop for certain over 2 years. Most of the time it gets me a better deal than ebay 20% off.
Another benefit is that I can use the phone screen protector&case free for 6 months without worrying as there is 0 excess on merchandise protection. My person record was smashing a S9 screen on the second day of purchase and they reimbursed my repair really fast & fuss free. I can keep smashing it until 6 months is up or they have paid up to the purchase cost of the phone.

            • @truetypezk: Good option is to buy from Mobilciti knowing they'd have it listed longer than other b&m stores. More chance of maximum price drop over 2 years. Shame that the total savings over the life of the card is $20,000.

When buying consoles its best to purchase them standalone as bundles change frequently closing the door for further price drops.

Next best option for price protection is 28 Degrees card. There might be others.

            • @truetypezk: Nice. Initially I bought a Huawei P8 a few years ago and tried to claim price protection but I filled out the form incorrectly so it was refused, then the phone was pulled off the shelves soon after…

I've only made one successful claim on a jacket.

Guess i should look into using it more!!

I did recently buy a new phone but as I bought a deal i split with a friend, they ended up paying so couldn't put my card to good use.

Next on my to-buy list is a tablet and laptop though.

        • Is there a price difference limit. My NAB cards used to have a 3 month option but the difference had to be at least $75.

          • @try2bhelpful: No, there's no price difference limit, I've claimed for a difference below $10 before, but it's up to a maximum of $2000 per year (across all claims) and $600 per item (across the 2 years).

I just claim every time the price drops. Black Friday/Cyber Monday was great for me, even though I made a few purchases, I probably broke even simply from other things I've bought in the last 12 months being heavily discounted and claiming them.

      • It's no longer available for 2 years to new customers - the rules changed as of 5th March 2018

        I have this card;

        https://financialservices.coles.com.au/credit-cards/no-annua…

Price difference needs to be $10 or more but I don't know the new rules as they are not applicable to me…

    • If you don't need data, might be cheaper to buy a Wifi version. Obviously don't get the plan.

      • I'd prefer a tablet with cellular capacity but reading through it appears it might be limited to only Telstra use

        • I just hot spot off my phone.

  • Aren’t new iPads around the corner? I know the pro’s were just updated. Expecting new ones around March?

    • +3

That is the rumour. This is plenty fast though.

      • To me the issue is the screen real estate with the button. Remove the button, smaller bezels great machine

  • -8

Confirmed I got $696 cash back from a super-secret cash-back organisation. All I had to do was not buy it.

  • Where is the 10GB/month option ???
    I can only see 2GB 29/m on 32GB model and 34/m on 128GB model …

    • +1

If you click on Personal in the Telstra site it takes you to it.

  • Hi sorry, how does one get a cashback? I don't really understand?

    • +1

You have to be with "reward gateway" which is affliated through your workplace, so to most here, the cashback doesn't apply

      • And buy online and click from there?
        Or can do instore

      • -3

Yes ok but how do I get it, not really fussed with your 'rules'.

        • +1

You have to be with "reward gateway" which is affliated through your workplace

  • Is it true you can only watch nrl at 7 inch size ?

    • +2

It is. On my current tablet the footage only makes up that portion of the screen.

  • I can see Peace Of Mind for 32gb Ipad but I can not see if for 128gb. Am I missing something? Link?

    • I think they changed their website, it's under the normal tablet section and may use live chat to ask for it to be included? Because now it states $10/1gig extra and the deal page states this offer is "only" for 32gig version.

  • +2

I spoke with a lovely chap from Telstra and couldn't get a better deal than this - he did specifically mention that he could add the peace of mind protection free of charge though (not sure if it was or wasn't already included however I was signing up anyway!) and it's now on my contract.

    Thanks OP!

    • did u do that in store?

      • Nope, Live Chat.

    • +1

You have to ask for the "peace of mind" for free, otherwise you could get stuck with excess data charges.

      From the Critical Information Summary:

      Extra Data
Unless you’ve opted in to Peace of Mind data, if you use more than your Monthly Data allowance, we will automatically add extra data to your service in blocks of 1GB for $10 (Extra Data). Extra Data is for use in Australia and expires at the end of your billing month and is not sharable with other services on your account.

      • +4

Peace of mind data is opt out on this offer, the CIS your referring to is the $29 tablet plan, this offer is the $29 companion tablet plan with $10 device repayment and $10 discount per month and bonus 5gb of data.

        Peace of Mind data

    • contract - Telstra - oxymoron

  • anyone tried to get this in store?. will they price match the online store?

    • +2

      Available all Telstra stores countrywide.

      • Just had some clown on the phone telling me it was "An online only offer".

        • -6

if your dumb enough to believe anyone from Telstra good luck…

          • +13

@petry: If you're dumb enough to not know the difference between your and you're then you have no business calling other people dumb

  • Any good deals on Android tablets?

  • For anyone who has a Telstra NBN plan and is considering this, try going to a Telstra store and asking for a free speed boost (100/40) for signing up to this plan. I got that offer, but ended up just porting my mobile over to the account instead.

  • I'm….sorta tempted. That's a pretty good deal, unless iPads are cheaper then I thought?

    • +1

Wifi only is cheaper but this deal is almost perfect for most users

  • Don't forget to buy a Apple pencil as well. Take advantage of active stylus function

  • +1

Only hope they have one of the new iPhones on a similarly cheap plan 😇

  • Complete joke what they charge for the galaxy tab A tablets, shit is like 5 year old technology, not even full HD and 16gb storage, and they want the same price as this ipad.

    Ridiculous.

    • +2

They keep updating the tab A. It might not be the same one from 5 years ago.

  • +1

Thanks OP, got the 2018 iPad 128GB for $24/mth.

Pulled out an old transcript from when I went on the Pixel deal back in Feb on a Business plan "$10 a month discount on another service". They (surprisingly) honoured it, although I guess it's in writing from a rep…

Just hotspotting my data over from my phone

Also tried my luck with cashback, let's see if anything happens out of it :)

    • where did you have that written about the $10 discount for another service?

      • +1

I signed up for a Business phone plan with Telstra in Feb and it was in an old transcript when I asked if I could get a $10/month discount (one of the supposed perks of a business plan) - they said only if I had multiple services.

Oh and got a bonus 5GB of data which I didn't realise as well, tacked on to my phone (which is interesting?)

        • Thanks
How do you check the actual data included?

    • Did you have a cashback offer through work or some other way?

      • Nah I just tried Cashrewards here (due to reports of Shopback not working) but probably not going to work here either haha

        • +2

Had a quick look on the CashRewards site for Telstra and states - "Csahback is currently not available on any tablet plans". Yes typo was theirs :)

And similarly on ShopBack - "Cashback is not qualified for: Prepaid, Tablet, lease plans."

  • +1

Can't justify this. Can anyone convince a non Apple user to buy this? I don't even know what apps make it worth the purchase.
Edit: why the negs? Not being sarcastic. I gave a pos vote ffs

    • I'm in the same boat. I have never ever purchased an apple product in my life. Not even a USB cable and somehow I'm tempted to get this…

      • +1

Don't. I had Apple and Android in my last job and did not like it.

If you're used to Android then you will find the differences been the two annoying.

Every time you use the tablet it's different to the phone and every time you use your phone is different to the tablet.

If you want a tablet buy an Android one.
Plus any apps you have purchased will be free on the Android tablet. If you buy an Apple product you will need to buy the apps again.

        • Thanks. Work gave me an iPhone 8 and absolutely hate it. Though I've used a friend's iPad before and I like the idea of using it to browse, watch videos and get some work done on the train to and from work. I guess I'll pass since I'm an Android person. Pay for apps? Heh never.

        • hahah “buy” apps… i won’t pay 99c for an app, instead will try 6 shitty free apps

generally agree with the annoying differences. IT, win 10, microsoft everything but iphones from 3gs. had a galaxy tab it just annoyed me.

          • @zqipz: There are plenty of free, useful, iOS apps. Most have gone to in app purchases but I’m willing to wait out any limitations in the free versions..

    • Pass IMO. Differences are to big.
