Microsoft Surface Pro (256GB, i5, 8GB RAM)

Price reduction from $1999 to $1349, hopefully Officeworks has stock so it can be price beat.
Pretty good laptop and a big discount for Microsoft.

Lmk if this is a duplicate, so far I haven't found another post

Bretty gud price tho this is the old model

    • probably the reason it's on sale

Add a keyboard and a stylus and you're looking at $1600. Unless you really want to use it as a tablet, not really worth it imo seeing it has 7th gen CPU and no usb c, it's already outdated

Wasn't worth it at $1999 either

    • Another Microsoft innovation: component pricing for laptops.

      • As opposed to Apple charging $2000+ for a giant candy crush tablet with keyboard?

        • -1

Macbook is certainly overpriced, but iPad 2018 with 3rd party keyboard Cover is good value.

Not sure what Apple has to do with my comment though.

          • @bargaino: I was talking about the iPad “pro”

            • +1

@miq: I just check the prices … OMG! Even the keyboard is $300, and pencil $200.
              Makes Surface look cheap.
But Lenovo has keyboard included, and pencil $100. That is a big spread.

  • Check the Microsoft store too, tee
    Pricing seems similar

It would be a decent price of it was the 8th gen CPU. Not a great laptop at all, it's a good tablet for sure, but laptop it ain't. Can't sit out on your lap with keyboard without it digging into you. It's a tablet first

This is a direct import so good luck getting Microsoft Aus to help if you have a problem with warranty

    • +2

Microsoft Aus are brilliant with warranty for overseas bought models. At least in my experience. My US bought version of this exact model was having some issues, logged the repair online and was given a warning screen about the fact my model was a US model and would be replaced by an Australian model. TNT picked it up next morning, received my replacement 3 days later.

      • I bought a Surface Book from Dick Smith last year. It took 2 months to arrive. (It was out of stock which I knew at the time of order.) Then it was faulty on receipt. Dick Smith referred me to Microsoft. Microsoft advised warranty had expired. It took Dick Smith 4 weeks to assess the Surface Book and agree it was faulty and advise they would replace it. It was then 'dispatched' from an os warehouse another 6 weeks later (last Friday). They claimed it was out of stock again despite it being advertised on Dick Smith and Kogan stores.
DS take a week to respond to emails, if they respond at all. There is no phone number which you can speak to the help desk. Never again Dick Smith!

        • I agree, always try to price match/beat at a physical store, I know a lot of people who have had trouble with Kogan and Dick Smith for their grey imports or whatever, JB and Officeworks usually have the same product in store and can guarantee Australian stock.

        • Dick Smith referred me to Microsoft.. They actually breaking ACL by referring you onto the Manufacture

8th gen can be had for similar price on MS store with unidays discount I think..

  • +1

Title should be updated that these are 7th Gen Surface pro's and not the latest 8th Gen.

  • it's Pro 3 or 4 or 5?

    • Its a Surface Pro 2017 aka Surface Pro 5.

  • Pretty good laptop

Except the whole part where it's not a laptop at all.

    • I switched from a Pro 4 to a Book 2.
My Mrs uses a Pro 4.
Both of us used and continue to use the Pro series on our laps quite fine.

    • Oops dupe

    • I'm not sure why I got downvoted for saying this too. It's a terrible laptop, I bought one for use while at uni and I couldn't use it while sitting down in a lecture room as it was so unstable on my legs, and would dig into my legs after just a few minutes.

      • I bought one for uni too. Got through my Masters degree with it over two years (most of it with the Surface Pro sitting on my lap).

It was definitely a little harder to use than a normal laptop, but never caused an issue. Maybe I just have really strong legs?

        • No feeling in your legs perhaps? I got a surface laptop after a year and it was incredible, made a huge difference. Same thing but not detachable

  • Is there a recommended alternative keyboard and pen to the original Microsoft offerings that are better value.

    • +1

Apparently there are some third party keyboards for surface 3 but I don't think for the current ones. You can use any bluetooth keyboard/mouse of course, but the oem keyboard has the connection to the surface directly which is nice. There's quite a few aftermarket pens you can use by wacom, zodiac etc but never tried myself. I don't have the pen for my surface yet, not sure if I'd use it.

The Type Cover is one of the biggest advantages of buying a Surface - really good, full sized keyboard that types like the best laptop keyboards, and a similarly high quality trackpad.

      • Really cheap too……………

        • It has a full sized keyboard with good tactile response and a pretty big glass touchpad, is thin, durable, and looks good. Not to mention it's cheaper than the (far less functional) iPad Pro equivalent. I think it's quite fairly priced. Clearly you wanted a normal laptop to begin with?

          • @Tycn: No it's just bull that you pay so much for a tablet, then have to fork out so much to make it usable.

  • I think HN had the i5/8/128gb 8th gen model for $1088 after xmas and the 256gb model for around 1300. Not a great price for the previous version

  • hopefully Officeworks has stock so it can be price beat

Rung em up, Mentioned the word Dick Smith and they went on about grey imports and stuff. Same case with JB.

    • +1

Depends on the store, I price beat an S9 from Dick Smith at an Officeworks in Epping and essentially saved $400 at the time, even though the first store we went to said that Epping wouldn't be able to do it.

  • Isn't Officeworks still price matching grey imports after their decision a few months ago???

    • I'm not sure what you're referring to, but from personal experience it usually comes down to the store and whoever you're dealing with. Some employers will say that since Dick Smith doesn't offer the same warranty or has grey imports, so they won't be able to price beat, but others will just say that you found a great deal and won't cause any fuss :)

  • I go a Pro3, the noisy of it like a hair drier, is it still same?

  • Does office works even sell surface pros to price match with? I can't find them on their website

    • I said hopefully but I think jb has better deals now anyway so this deal is irrelevant
