  • roadside assist has been creeping up every year

cheapest racq is now $97 per year

    i remember it was $79

  • I am based in QLD can i still use this?

    • racq basic at $97 per year

move your ctp to racq (same name) for $10 discount

    • +1

If you are considering RACQ membership, know that RACQ can be joined "instantly" for a ~$100 extra fee. Normally there is a one-week period between joining and getting access to roadside service, but if you pay the extra fee, you can join over the phone and get roadside service straight away. And as well as the roadside service, you now have a year of membership as well.

For me, who maybe needs the RACQ once a decade, this works out much cheaper. ~$200 every ten years = ~$20/year. I printed out a card with the phone number and how to join, and put it in the glove box, in case any of my family members can't remember what to do when they have a flat battery. I showed them the card, so they know to look for it.

If you were thinking of joining to get "RACQ Rewards" (similar to Entertainment Book, discounted gift cards at many retailers), you can get that by opening a bank account with them. No annual fee. Make a small deposit, which you can withdraw if/when you close the account.

  • Wow I just might get it since if I don’t and something happens I will have to pay for towing which will cost a lot more

No deal for me as it’s 55$ join fee for new members

Just bought roadside assistance from Woolworths; it was only $50 per year on top of insurance, which was the cheapest comprehensive I could find.

    • Have you ever tried to use it? and How long is the wait time?

      • +3

We used it in September. My wife had a flat tire at 11PM in West Pennant Hills and their team was there in less than 15 minutes.

        • Thanks for your reply.

FYI if you already have a member in your household you can add another car at 20% off currently - making it $88 for a year. If you join for 3 or more years it comes down to $83.47 per year. 5 years brings it down to $79.20.

    • How do you get it down to $79.20 ? I tried adding it to my wife's policy but the %20 gets discounted on full price !

  • I've never had an issue with Budget Direct Roadside Assistance. $80pa… normal price no "specials".
How NRMA can charge this much and people still use them is beyond me.

    https://www.budgetdirect.com.au/roadside-assistance-australi…

    • Well I use NRMA for my insurance (comprehensive and home contents) and they’ve been great in that regard when I’ve had to claim. The roadside while not the cheapest on its own gets made up in the grouped policy discounts and probably close to pays for itself in that regard.

  • If I buy this would I have access to NRMA rewards?

    • i bought and i have access to membership rewards. so far checked caltex 5c off and the car rental 15% off

      • Thanks man. Nice user name.

  • Previous members (non-active roadside member) can also access this. When you signup, they will still give you the free 3 months and waive the activation fee.

  • The cheaper the service the less towing distance allowance, taxi allowance and accommodation allowance it seems. Gut feeling says to get RACV for $110 as it seems to be well rounded.

  • Just got another car and wondering if I get NRMA CTP and/or comprehensive insurance.
Is there any road side covered on those policies or is roadside assistance an extra purchase?

Is there a discount if so?

    • And would I get a further discount on top of this deal

  • How would this kind of offering compare, say if I require assistance once every 2 years?

    http://www.gotu.com.au/about/how-gotu-works/

They charge per assist, and require no annual/monthly/membership fee.

      Still more expensive than AAMI

      • +1

Looks like you need an existing policy with aami to take this out?

Budget direct have road side assist for $80/year (cheaper than aami)
        https://www.budgetdirect.com.au/roadside-assistance-australi…

        • For budget direct do we have to pay a service fee in case of call out?

        • +1

Budget direct is good value but the towing is limited to 15km only. If there is any major repair/fix is required I would like my car to be towed to my regular mechanic instead of any nearby mechanic. RACV covers upto 60km for $180 which is $100 more than budget direct but may be worth. Doesn't seem like any other good roadside assistance with more towing distance.

      • You need to have AAMI comprehensive policy to get this

      • Lucky! Your with aami
        But this is nrmade better!

    • Any cheap road side assist with multi car cover?

    • Thanks, my roadside assist expires in 2 months. Does anyone have any experience re response times of big name RSA brands?

      • Varies
Had NRMA rsa for a car I had previously, found them pleasant to deal with when requesting assistance, provided updates on eta. Had no issues with them.

    • Youi has road side assistance included free of charge as part of their comprehensive insurance..

      • Only for first two call outs. All additional callouts are over $100. Any experience with using Youi for roadside? I only just changed my insurance to Youi and not sure if I should continue RACQ roadside as well or not.

        • How many call outs do you need?? Two sounds plenty enough if your car isn't 30 years old.

No experience yet, I've never had to call roadside.

          • @[Deactivated]: In a 12 month period 2016-2017 I had made 4 RACQ calls for my 2004 Toyota Echo :( Two were related, others weren't. I also had to change the tyre in that same 12 month period - didn't use roadside for that.

I have a newer SUV which is now insured with Youi, but the main reason I'd use roadside would be to change the tyre since it would be too hard to do an SUV by hand. I also use this SUV for soft off-road, and long inland drives so always possible to hit a roo etc.

    • is it applicable to all states

      • looks like available in NSW, ACT, may be Queensland as well.
