Curious; does the motor lock when in final position?
I need one for my single car garage. Already have one on the other door i have.
That is to say, does it do what MERLIN and such do, and stop a strong person from being able to force the door open?

Also….. mate…. "Garage Illumination: Powerful Festoon Globe Lighting"? Really? It's a festoon globe :P nothing powerful about it.

    • Glad I wasn't the only one to have a chuckle at "Powerful Festoon Globe Lighting"

Based on the photos, this appears to be a re-branded B&D or ATA door opener.

      • +2

You're actually 100% correct, it's made by ATA for Auto Openers. There are small changes to the unit that is more centred around the end user, rather than the dealer. At a brief glance, the warranty covering DIY installation, an extra handheld remote control and the included sun visor holder is all stuff the ATA doesn't have :)

    • +1

The motor will lock in position, so you'll be unable to open it by hand on the inside or out. However, should you lose power and need to open the door by hand there is a manual release pull cord that you can use to open the door. As for stopping someone from forcing the door open, I don't think anyone has actually worked out the force required to force a door open between brands! It'd for sure stop someone, they'd be making an absolute racket attempting it as well.

For a single car garage, this has more than enough power! As for the lighting, I totally get it - It's a globe. It's actually not too bad for a Festoon setup, a lot better than the older units. If it is a major issue you can buy aftermarket LED globes that'll satisfy the light requirement, however :)

    • On a side note, if you want a link to that LED light I've got a guy digging for it now :)

      • I think it was more than the tech savvy among us were poking fun at the marketing.
It's hardly a big deal, just that I actually get a little irked by advertising that does it.

        I understand that it's all non binding guff;
but to people like the elderly (or even the Bogans) among the crowd, they're misled (which, I guess is the key to selling).

"Powerful Festoon Globe", to the educated means "power hungry, old filament globe that will burn out." To the 'simple' among us? "Powerful!"

        Where as "500 Lumen LED" SOUNDS like a weak single dot;
The uneducated would picture a single round diode. The Educated? 500Lm? Likely an SMD or COB bulb! Nice!

Reality is that it's the opposite of what the "clever marketing" sounds like.
It's just a personal peev and I dislike it.

Just some nerd rage, carry on :P

        • Hey, nerd rage is warranted! I heard from an ATA rep once a few years ago that their tech team set up a power-monitored garage with an opener on it to work out the average cost per year of a garage opener for use in their advertising. I honestly couldn't tell you what motor it was, I'd assume one of their LED units?

Anywhoo! The whole point was to work it out so they could use it in their advertising. They tried to mimic a standard household scenario with two cycles per day, seven days a week (One cycle being one open and one close). It worked out to a little over $20 per year - Don't think the 6m of light the bulb would throw out per day would affect that number too drastically.

Don't get me wrong, I know Festoon bulbs are a little thirsty, but you can also program the handheld remote to be able to turn that light on or off which would help with the power bill. I also went through our records to see how many of these particular bulbs we've sold. The first and last was in 2015, but can't find any specifics on the cause of death of the bulb :)

  • Hi OP do you organise install for us? Or if we do this ourselves, do you have a install procedure or video as such?

    • Hi OP, interested in install too.

    • +2

Hey mate, the opener can be professionally installed or done via the DIY route. We've actually got an installation video here!

If you let me know the rough area you're located in, I can also recommend someone for you.

      • Thanks OP. I'm in south east Melbourne. It's there anyone you would recommend?

The video is pretty straight forward. Is it easy to install?

        • For South East Melbourne, try AGG Doors on (03) 9799 1999. Just let them know National Garage has referred you on!

As long as you follow the steps in the video as well as the manual that comes with the unit, it's not too bad a job. We give our local guys in Albury about an hour to install the motor, including travel time from the previous job. Give yourself an hour to an hour and a half tops and it'll be easy done! Just have to find a day that's not insanely hot…

        • +1

          It's basically just

          • Slide onto door 'pole'
          • Attach to wall somehow.

The specifics will be in the manual.

If you've EVER done home repairs to even the most novice level, you'd be OK.

  • HI OP, I am interested for a DYI to replace my 10 years old panel door openers. Which one do you recommended? What is the best price you can do?

    • Hey mate, I actually posted a deal for one last week!

Check out the Panel Opener by Auto Openers - It's also got a DIY warranty so you'll be good to go there, or you can easily get it installed by a local professional should you have any dramas. You'd be looking at about $279.20 delivered using the POOLTIME code, so roughly $70 off :)

      • Thanks. I have an existing GlidermaticsGTS, do you know will I be able to simply replace the existing motor? or I need to replace the rail and everything.

        • Hey mate, sorry I missed this one!

You'll need to replace the whole kit, but the motor comes out with everything you'll need in terms of the rail and associated hardware.
The older GTS had a much larger footprint, so there's also a possibility you'll need to redrill holes for the opener to sit on.

Apart from that, you should be ok! Check out that YouTube video showing you how you can install it and let me know if you have any questions!

  • hi OP,

Looking to get this one for a 35 year old house we just bought. The roller door looks standard and name says "Roll-A-Door" or something to that effect.
It has NO ball bearings so to speak - and needs considerable effort to open / close.

Will this one fit and operate properly ?… I was planning of applying some lithium grease or something.

    TIA

Hi mate, sounds like an old B&D door. They usually don't have rollers in the side (that's more seen in overhead Sectional / Tilt doors) and instead have felt running in the guide tracks. Over the years this can wear away, however, don't stress if you can't see any felt! We're also unable to order the felt in as a spare, as it's part of the manufacturing process.

I've posted before that a lot of resistance can be due to the tension of the door, as well as the guide tracks themselves. If you clean the door out, make sure to only use Silicone based lube as other lubricants tend to gum the tracks up in the long run. Our local guys use a $5 can of it from Bunnings that works a treat. Just clean the tracks out with an old rag then hit it with some of that lubricant, you'll notice an immediate difference.

If the door is still jerky and causing a few issues, I'd suggest calling a local garage door technician to come and install the motor. They'll balance the door before installing the motor so it doesn't burn out in a few months. This particular unit is pretty hardy and would have the power to do your door, but it doesn't hurt to help it out. As a rule of thumb, an ideal door moves freely by hand and doesn't feel like it's 'snagging' on anything. In manual mode, if you lift the door halfway it should sit roughly where you let go. If it rises up a significant amount, the springs have been over-tensioned. If it drops significantly, it's under tensioned.

  • Is there a bluetooth or wifi accessory for it? Open/close or perhaps a generic aftermarket type that can work?

    • +1

Hey mate, the motor's got a standard terminal block style interface on the board that will allow nearly anything to wire in, from electronic keyswitches to alarm systems. We got asked this question last time we posted the opener on OzBargain and have since done a bit of digging.

The GoGoGate2 will wire into the Roller Opener, with the White Plug going into GND and the Red Plug going into OSC. This then allows you to monitor the garage door and motor from wherever you have internet access. There's also a pretty cool feature that allows you to add it to your Google or Amazon Smarthome using IFTTT (If This Then That). There are some pre-defined applets for some basic usage, or you can create your own for specific requirements.

      • can you please check you dm? thank you!

REP: As much as I'd love to buy one right now financially I'm probably looking at a few months time (contract worker waiting another 6 weeks for his first pays to start coming back in…)

I will say this though, you have got to be one of the friendliest, most helpful and responsive reps to ever grace OzBargain. You really go above and beyond and I really hope this gets reciprocated with business. WHEN I do buy it'll most definitely be from you.

Thanks for the kind words! The garage door industry can be frustratingly complex if you haven't had experience with it before, which I feel like is the grand majority of people. We / I feel like if we're going to post a deal on here for what's essentially a semi-complex bit of equipment we need to be active and give advice when needed. Plus, it lets me get my garage geek on, so everyones happy :)

As for the wait mate, no stress. We're not likely to run these openers out anytime soon as they're pretty darn reliable, so when you're ready just drop me a bell!

  • Hey REP,

I'm looking for a whole new double garage door with opener, any suggestions of installers to look at near hornsby?

    • G'day!

Try Michael from Automated Garage Door Solutions, located in Narellan Vale. We've been referring him installations in the Sydney area for a few years now, with some great feedback from OzBargainers late last year! You can get him on 0439 196 608.

As for the garage door itself, give Wholesale Garage a call. If you are able to pick the door up from the B&D plant in Sydney (or arrange a courier to do it for you) it would work out a little cheaper for you in the long run. You can get Laura on 1300 456 356, or you can get a quote on the website here.

Hey Rep, wanted to echo the comments from Click_It. You’ve done a great job managing the comments and not getting sucked into getting defensive. The best way to deal with OzB members is no BS because we can smell it a mile away! I’m in Adelaide. Is there an installer you can recommend? Thanks

    • Heya mate! Sorry for the late reply, I've been out helping the lads in dispatch for a large chunk of the day. Thanks for the kind words though! I figure as long as I provide a solution for every issue that's mentioned, I'm doing something right.

As for Adelaide, try Harry from Doors n More. You can get him on 0416 029 033!

  • Quick postage & delivery. Received it in 2 days.
I have installed it now, but how do you solve the problem of the door now being at an angle?
The auto roller drive unit props the axle up about 2cm on the side it is installed on.
So now the door edge runs into the tracks at the bottom and doesn't run smoothly any more.
Also the door doesn't close quite as flat, with a gap at the bottom on the drive unit side.

    • I just replaced an old motor with this one and what I've found is that the supplied black u-bolt and nuts now clamp directly to the bar between the door and the wall bracket. The old existing u-bolt clamps only the bar to the wall bracket.
Hope that makes sense and helpful.

    • Morning! That definitely doesn't sound too crash hot mate, let's get this fixed.

Can you send me a few photos of what's going on there?

Came here to say a huge "Thank you" to the REP. This level of service is simply amazing. A right piece of advice, very prompt dispatch and delivery and extremely nice communication. Cannot be happier with the service. Please post more deals, I am pretty sure that OzBargain community will be appreciating your way of doing the business.
    THANK YOU VERY MUCH!!!!!
