JAL provide 2x23KG checkin baggage as well! - well on my flight in March they are, not sure if consistent across all flights.

  • Now were talking - Sadly no Oct Dates… if OCT id be all over it

Will hang out and hope for an OCT Date on Qantas or JAL (Both direct) under $680 then id snap it up.

I just bought the Singapore Airlines yesterday for OCT ($680) lol would love $680 for direct flight with Japanese Airlines

      • that is good price, Oct which date?

    • Same here - October or November

    • Any particular reason why October?

I've been in winter and spring, but not Autumn.

      • +1

Late October is a fantastic time to visit where the temp is nice and Halloween is absolutely insane (in Tokyo)

Autumn is also a fantastic time to visit Kyoto as the trees start dropping their leaves and changing colour. The crowds are minimal too! Been 4 times and will only go during October

      • +1

It is also the time to see nice cars and women in Lycra if going to Tokyo.👍🏻

Rugby World Cup will be in japan.
I think it is in sep or oct that is why no sale in this season

    • +1

As Koakun said, Rugby World Cup is on this year.
From late Sep until first week of November.
Don't know what the chances are of a good sale for this period due to this.

Really love the Airfare to come from JAL Direct - very very very nervous booking a flight on Skiddo, or something similar, 9 months out and not knowing if its all legit and above board

Given that BestJet is now in administration this is a very real concern.

    • I booked with BYOjet yesterday, they also have a $30 discount code if you sign up to their newsletter. The website belongs to flight centre, I’ve used them twice with no issues.

  • I am very very tempted.. How is it to travel in Summer … I am assuming June to Aug is Summer

    • Its really humid from what I've heard.
Their rainy season is normally in June, then the heat in July/August.

May was quite nice last year though.

    • Very humid, compare it to SEA

    • Went in July and my 6 year old daughter got a nose bleed due to hot and humid weather. This was the only time she ever had one.

    • I went in late October/November which is considered autumn and it was still very hot, can’t imagine what summer is like.

Even cheaper with Philippine Airlines. Sydney to Tokyo with a stopover in Manila for $553 AUD. Full Service Airline. 3-14/June.

They canceled my japan flight a few days before the flight date and now i'm stuck in the Bestjet scandal due to my refund never coming. I have heard that some airlines will just sell cheap flights and cancel if they do not sell enough seats.

      • Yikes. I was thinking about booking with them now I think I'll pay a bit more to avoid them…

        • $100 more to fly direct and save an additional 12 hours of travel with a much better and safer airline sounds like a better deal..

          • @Elision: Philippine Airlines is a decent airline. Usually when airlines cancel your flight, they put you on another flight departing a little earlier or later. If you book directly with the airline, you shouldn't have an issue.

            • @TRAVELO: For sure they are decent, overall rank wise they fall quite a bit lower than JAL though, by no means a bad or unsafe airline at all but for me the stopover is a definite deal breaker. Understandable that it may be a more desirable option for those that are on a strict travel budget.

            • @TRAVELO: They cancelled very late and changed the layover from 2 hours to around 20 hours. The Bestjet problem was just unfortunate as I asked for a refund rather than to accept the 20 hour layover. The refund process took too long on Philippines airlines' end and it was already too late when Bestjet filed for bankruptcy a couple weeks later. (I waited more than 1 month and still no refund. Philippines airline customer service was not helpful in giving any information on the refund)

Nothing beats 10 hours vs 16 and in some cases i have seen 24 to 31 hours trip.

I think paying a tiny extra for a direct flight wins in my books

Now lets hope JAL offer some killer fares very soon, then i dont stress re the booking company

    • 600 ish with JAL is a fantastic price. It’s normally $1000+ I don’t know if you’d ever get much better than that for full service, unless they end up in a pricing war with qantas.

I checked the Jetstar return for free prices from Melbourne last time, because it’s no longer direct it was going to be about $200 for baggage which made it $550, add food and it’s almost $600 for a budget airline.

  • +5

None of the recent Japan sale fares compare to Jetstar's Return for Free sale. Flew last year for $360 return before luggage fees. Last year the sale was in Feb, hopefully it comes back again soon.

    • +1

Im hoping too now after reading this… for that price i dont mind paying for a lunch and bags

    • +3

They already had the sale in October last year. As it’s no longer a direct flight It’s not worth it from Melbourne if you want luggage because it ends up being about $550 with no food as they charge luggage per leg which adds almost $200. Much better value paying for a full service airline flying direct for a little more.

That said if you only need carry on or are from a state that flies direct Jetstar is a good deal.

Pretty sure those Jet Star flights were from Avalon too.

        • Ew D: never again

  • Just booked with Japan Airlines directly for $1423 for two adults. Yes it’s a $70 more but in my opinion worth it for peace of mind again Skiddo going tits up. Still nice prices so i’m happy. Thanks OP.

Great! Make sure you look into a JR pass if you're looking to travel outside of TYO on the bullet trains. Need to buy before you arrive, if you feel it's worth it.

      • Actually went in 2017 and did that, but didn’t plan well enough to make the most of it! Have to weigh up if daily passes are cheaper than the pass if you’re not catching the Shinkansen much. Although with a few trips on the Shinkansen you’re already ahead.

Pray that the dollar goes back up, cos right now the exchange against the yen is absolutely terrible right now.

    • Only praying can save us

  • nothing for mid july with JAL :(

  • Great price, but stinking hot during this time.

    • May weather is lovely actually, like 15 at morning/night and early 20s during the day. June onwards for sure though, dat humidity.

  • I regularly travel to Japan and every time I tell myself never to travel in this period…..but I do anyway.

  • Mmmm - 33" inch seat pitch and 19" seat width in a 2-4-2 configuration on the 787. The best economy product flying today bar none… and at a great OzB price. Love it!

  • I was searching flights.

EXPEDIA - have flights on JAL using dates 1 Sept - 16 Sep at $510 Return

I checked a few times and it all looks legit - am i missing anything? at a cost saving of $200 per ticket, im nervous and unsure

love to know peoples view on this -

This is a link to my booking (for 3 people) so others can compare too

    http://prntscr.com/m61vz9

    • Edit: It is $500 USD per person which is around $692 aud

      • ah good pickup… so $692 is about on par…. thanks for pointing out… ill be more diligent in my next search

    • Best to stick to expedia.com.au if comparing them. I used to make that mistake with kayak.com, frustrating when you think you have a deal!

  • What's a guideline for a good price for Sydney-Tokyo then Osaka-Sydney be like? All my researching comes down to about $720 (disregarding Jetstar, Philippines and Malaysian air), or can I expect there to be <$650 or so deals too?

  • Has anyone booked this ? I could not select my seat. It says seat selection is not available. Is it because it is sale class ? we are traveling with a little one so worried about we cannot all seat together.
