separate Pre-Amp and Power Amp combo… but prepare to pay thousands!
This!
I have this setup and that's when you hear the difference! .. even more clarity using XLR out.
But then you have to compliment this with respectable speakers too!In most cases, you pay for what you get!
Cheers
@vinni9284: You lucky bugger! I don't have the room nor the desire to have a decent HT these days but get just as much enjoyment (possibly more!) from 2-channel goodness… and when it comes to that I can't go past my vintage Perreaux Pre & power combos but the vintage Yamaha gear gives it a run for its money too :) But of course then there's the valve gear but I wont crap on about all that ;)
@SteveAndBelle: Yes, IMO some of the vintage gear is better tbh!
I have heard sound coming out of a Cerwin Vega D-8 speakers and they were very impressive!@vinni9284: Yeah, absolutely. Cerwin Vega get a bad rap by many but the few I've restored have usually been heaps of fun to listen to! Not the worlds most delicate sound but still extremely good and can be so earth shaking (a trademark of theirs) a Sub probably isn't required… as long as your Amp can pass those freqs on to the mains of course. Best bit is that you can grab CVs in good condition for very cheap… even a hundred bucks or so!
Sweet. Needed to replace my old Yama :D
Oh ok, it seems I may need to buy a an active subwoofer for this unit, I'm not very knowledgeable in this area and thought I could just use the speakers from my old "home theatre in a box" but it seems this amp won't be powerful enough to power the sub?
The RCA Subwoofer Pre-out is only providing a signal (hence the 0.1 of the 5.1 Channel) where 0.1 is for 1 x subwoofer output. 0.2 is for 2 x subwoofer 5.2.
Yes it will provide a signal to an external active powered subwoofer.
I would opt for an entry level Klipsch subwoofer.
You want more kick, then go for an SVS
CheersThanks Vinni :)
Does this receiver upscale RCA inputs through to HDMI?
no sorry, only on the RXV685 and up (and aventage RXA780 and up)
cool. so if that's the case I'd have to use the "monitor out" rca on receiver to be able to view any RCA inputs on a tv/projector?
"We're sorry this product is currently out of stock. However, we may be able to order it for you quite quickly. Chat to our team to find out. "
changed now, but only a few units left! get them while they last! :)
Well for that price i had to get 1….Oz bargains is becoming a problem :D
This thread turned into a hi-fi rave so here's another 20c.worth that wasn't mentioned. Most big (and especially older) speakers are very inefficient….what this means is that you'll damage them by underpowering them (i.e.using a low powered amplifier).Much better to drive them with plenty of power. You can successfully use a 100/channel RMS amplifier to drive a pair of 60watt speakers, just don't turn it up to flat out.
1 left peoples!
ALL SOLD OUT!
Let me know if anyone else wants any, and I'll contact yamaha to see if we can get the same deal again for you all :)
Thanks OzBargain-ers, we appreciate the interest and the chat around AV receivers
had a talk to the business owner, we are now going to do a deal on the RXV385 also (again limited stock)
Maybe a good (incredibly cheap) deal on an Active subwoofer to go with this AVR ;)
let me have a look!
Just spoke with the owner, we have 5 x NSSW100 that we can do for OzBargain members at $249 (RRP $499, currently $295)
use code OZBSW100
Free shipping to east coast of oz!
please use code OZBV385 to get the 385 for $329 - limited numbers of stock
What is the difference between 385 and 385b?
@superforever: b for black?
@ntt: correct, and they are only available in black ;)
Just bought, thanks a lot mate. Free shipping to Perth too!!
How is the HTR-3071 different to the RXV385? Specs seem exactly the same.
not much difference, 385 now has no Bluetooth output (for wireless headphones etc) - other than that I believe all the same
@Bradd87: So the 3071 is a better receiver but cheaper?
@Livert: Can get here still. Never used this site though. $312 plus 2.5% cashback plus $5 off first order.
https://www.mydeal.com.au/htr3071b-yamaha-5-1ch-100w-bluetoo…@JakeTheMuSS: Or if you want to do more work here at Catch for about $285. $312 plus stack with 6% off gift cards https://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/428845 and 2.8% cashrewards
https://www.catch.com.au/product/yamaha-htr3071b-5-1-channel…
@Bradd87: can you please confirm this? bought the rxv385 for my parents after seeing your code, and a key reason was the bluetooth functionality. https://www.todds.com.au/products/yamaha-rx-v385-av-receiver lists bluetooth support, as does USA Yamaha.

@Hinee: Yeah, if the features on your current Amp are still OK then prolly best to save your cash and jump on a newer model in a year or two… once you actually need one.
To give you an idea of how the other half live… a mate of mine has the Yamaha Advantage Pre & Power Amp Combo. The Pre-Amp at a cool $3900 is an amazing piece of kit but obviously then needs to be connected to multiple Power Amps according to the system you want to build. Add the matching Yamaha Power Amp and you're looking at a $7000+ investment… and then you'll need decent speakers and most importantly proper room acoustics to get the most out of it all so yeah, you could very easily blow $20-30k setting up a 'decent' system and only you can decide if that's worthwhile.
