Prorack Roof Racks - 1100mm S-Wing S15 $214.20 C&C (Was $325.00) @ SuperCheap Auto eBay

170
PRIZE

Purchased Prorack S-Wing Roofracks for my Mitsubishi Lancer 2010.

RRP is $325.00 at SuperCheap Auto. Comes to $238.00 after 30% Boxing Day/End of Year Sale.

Combined with PRIZE code thanks to TA (https://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/427527)

Comes to $214.20 via Click & Collect or + $7.00 for postage.

Please note, a fitting kit is necessary to install these and comes separately. There are a few kits on SCA eBay store which you can combine to save on the kit as well. Unfortunately the kit for my Lancer is not available on their eBay website (K170 I think). Hence will have to purchase separately.

Most fitting kits look like they're $69.99 if people are interested.

It boggles me that a couple of lengths of aluminium can be valued at over $100 per metre!!

Having said that, I've never used or installed a roof rack kit - despite all my handyman activities, I've never needed one. By the time I've got the car full for a trip (4 kids!), or bulky items for transport, then I'm already at the point where my trailer is more versatile and easier to utilise instead… though I know this usually isn't an option in dense residential suburbs.

    • It’s a combination of a specific product that is difficult to fabricate, and I imagine stringent vehicle codes that requires folks don’t try and make their own, which may not be up to snuff and cause things to fall of the roof. There’s no question in my mind either that roof racks are a complete rip off, but you can get stuff of eBay cheaper and I’d think that considering the weight limit is usually restricted to around, at best maybe 100 KG, as long as the materials aren’t complete rubbish they’d be alright.

      • these are rated to 30kg - significantly less than 100kg.

          …75kg rating FWIW.

@Wilburre: Possibly 30kg per bar? Elsewhere product info says MAX 75kg. May be rated for 60kg for both but 75kg max…

              • @kamac93: Yeah i'd hope that would be it but would pay to check. I feel considering roof racks are their only business the specs should be less ambiguous.

            • +1

@Wilburre: Ah. The load rating restriction there may be coming from the car manufacturer. Even if a roof rack can hold 200kg, the car manufacturer may state it can only have a max of 30kg on the roof. It also can depend on the type of mount.

              • @PlasticSpaceman: that would actually make sense - the panel strength of newer cars is super low (even though the rack attaches to the gutters which should be strong, maybe they are concerned about flex or dip onto the roof or something?)

                • +1

@Wilburre: Yep, although older cars could have less strength due to higher safety requirements. Also keep in mind that if the car is moving, when it goes over a bump then the load will vary due to gforce/inertia - so 35kg static may mean double that or more dynamic when on the move. It's how people can have those roof rack tents - the higher load is fine when parked.

    • Agree re price, but have to say that (3 kids here) for family road trips I love the roof rack combined with a pod. Can take more with a trailer but is a lot easier for parking etc with a pod and it leaves more space inside the car.

Your link is to supercheap auto website not their ebay store,
On anotger note bought something from them on 10% ebay deal, next they they refunded me and said it is not available but the listing is still there at higher price !!!

  • I got a set of these nearly two years ago. Easy to fit once you work out the instructions, very quiet (wind noise can be as an issue with roof racks that are permanently mounted), and sturdy. No complaints at all.

  • Every car I have seen with these types of racks fitted seem to have panel dents around the installation points.

If you need them you need them but I wouldn't get them if I could do it another way.

    • For cars that have no rails or specific mount points. Then the universal foot that goes directly on the roof sides it will mark it.
