Picked up a silver Breville Barista express today from Harvey Norman for $519.20, cheapest I've seen it.

Great deal when combined with the amex credit. Brilliant machine

I'd rather buy it from TGG than Harvey Norman just out of principle.

    • I must be living under a rock, what wrong with Harvey Norman?

        Everything.

The GST on <$1000 purchases from overseas - guess who you have to thank for that?

        • Was it fair that local business copped it though? Just evens the playing field.

I don't understand why in the name of (profanity) people keep blaming Gerry when it was the two political parties that most of Australia voted for that did it.

The great thing about having the victims blaming the wrong person is that this way nothing ever changes.

Are people so brainwashed that they can't blame politician's anymore and instead blame the people that are paying them to remove their money? After watching SA elect the Liberal Party to lower electricity prices it wouldn't surprise me.

      • That you Gerry?

  • I was hoping this would be listed under TGG ebay 20% off deal. Disappointed!

    • The discount code does work but you have to pay $38 delivery on top. It costs the same with code PTGGS20, I had to apply it twice on ebay for it to register.

      • Unless your local has it in stock, then it's free c&c

  • So OP, have your churned out a few coffees with it? What are the Pros/Cons?

    • I made one so far, turned out amazing. I love the built in grinder as there is less mess and I love the shot buttons. I had an Aldi sterling coffee machine before and I hated grinding externally and timing the shots on my watch every time I made a coffee

It came with a lot of accessories which is nice, just missing the knock box but I already had one. the pucks knock out super easy where my old Aldi machine did not dry out the coffee after extraction.

The steam is slow to start but faster than my old machine but im sure they are all like this unless you buy the big cafe machines

      • How long between extraction and being about to steam? Can you run off a couple of shots first and then switch to steam and not have too much times passed to knock out a few milk coffees at once?

I'm looking for that utopia single boiler than just switches between modes fast and has the chops to do at least 2 coffees in a go (preferably 4!)

        • From a shot completed to the steam wand ready to start frothing milk is about 10-15 seconds. Being a single thermal block boiler it has its limitations. You could pump out 2 shots and steam a big pot of milk for 2 small caps in about 3-4 minutes total(including grind) if you know what you’re doing. It is a brilliant machine. Makes outstanding coffee, you won’t be disappointed. If you need to make 4 coffees you may need something bigger like the 920.

      • I had the Aldi Stirling machine also and it died on me after about 6 months of use. Water would come out of the dials etc. I'm surprised they never issued a recall for that machine, it was a death trap! Ended up getting a BES870 refurb for about 350 from ebay, so far so good although $520 for a new unit is good too.

Isn't the dual boiler the ozb preferred coffee maker?

    • Im sure they can all have equal amount of time in the spotlight :) I wanted the integrated grinder over the speed of brewing and steaming at the same time, that's not even looking at the price and the dual boiler seems to be more expensive. So I wouldn't consider the dual boiler at all

Best colesworth beans for a darker, stronger coffee? Picked up a nice DeLonghi from Marketplace and want to try it out.

My coworker and I like the Aldi dark roast beans (if you have an Aldi near you) and it's only about $11 a kilo.

    • I use the Aldi Lazzio beans, im no coffee snob but not bad for the price. Unsure if a $30/kg bag of beans will mean 3x as good coffee but willing to give it a go to see what the fuss is about.

    • Pablo & Rusty’s is good if you can swipe up their 50% off 3 month subscription. Comes down to $24/kg which is just as much as most of Coles and woolies. Otherwise Lazzio is fine

  • no longer on the website at all and i called harvey norman nunawading but they were unsure if this deal is still on.

    Did anyone buy one today?

    • Just called my local store and was able to secure one for that price. Has to be picked up/paid for by today.

      • which store?

        • Cannington WA

Finally got one from HN Nunawading.

    Redeem your free beans here:
    https://promotions.breville.com.au/2018-barista-express

    • Got my machine on November 1 but had no idea about these free beans. Thanks!!

    • you should post this as a deal - I had no idea the promotion was running and I'm sure there will be a few purchases of this machine over xmas and in the last month.
I just got my claim validated and it says i'll get the coffee within 6-8 weeks???? Anyone else redeemed this offer can verify how long it took to get the beans?

  • Poured my first coffee today but the needle went to over extraction.

Anyone have any tips on what dose and grind setting to start on? I had grind on 6 and dose in the middle.
Dose wasn't enough so I kept adding more to the filter basket.
Coffee puck came out damp even after leaving for a minute or two.

    • I’ve found that different machines respond to different settings but here’s mine after 2 months of testing…

      Fresh good quality beans
      - grind on 4
      - dose on one notch past 12 o’clock
      - firm tamp
      - use non pressurised double shot basket (single shot is very hard to get consistently right)

      Not so fresh beans
      - pressurised double shot basket (aka double wall basket)
      - grind on 12
      - dose at one notch behind 12 o’clock
      - not so firm tamp
You can also use these settings for fresh beans - try if you can’t get the non pressurised basket method right, as the pressurised (double wall) basket is easier to get decent coffee

      • Thanks.
After pouring lots of shots I think I finally got the settings right for my beans.

I am grinding on 8-9 and dose at 3 o'clock.

Interesting how you are dosing at just above 12 o'clock. Wouldn't that be too little grounds?
Do you use double shots for a single cup?

        • Yeah the settings seem to vary based on what I’ve read from other users….
I started with the dose right in the middle but there was far too much coffee, so after playing with it, 12 O’clock or just after works fine for me.
Also seems to be better off with the pressure needle closer to over extracted than the middle of the gauge. I kinda have to pay attention to the flow of coffee to watch for over extraction rather than rely on the gauge shrug
