Bendigo VIC ↔ Sydney $129 One Way @ Qantas (March-Oct '19)

680

Seems like Bendigo is going to have regular flights to Sydney. Beats driving over to Tullamarine and back. Decent price for flights but given they are the only airline flying the route expect the price to go up after the sale. Fares include checked bags and seat selection (can either pick window or aisle).

From The Bendigo Advertiser:

TICKETS are now on sale for Qantas flights between Sydney and Bendigo. From March 31, 2019, QantasLink will operate flights six days a week with its 50-seat Q300 turboprop aircraft, and daily during the peak summer season. The first flight will leave from Sydney on March 31, 2019, and touch down in Bendigo in the evening.
Bendigo will have its first flight to Sydney on April 1. QantasLink will offer special fares of $129 one-way between Bendigo and Sydney, for travel from March 31 to October 26, 2019. The sale ends December 17, 2018.

Flights take from an hour and 50 minutes to two hours.

I'm from Bgo, live in Sydney and can't wait. There are lost of ppl from central Vic that would prefer this option than driving to Melb. But keep it up scab.

        • You'd be surprised how much wealth there is in Bendigo. As with other regional cities like Geelong and Ballarat. There's a lot of perks with not having to borrow 10x your income to buy a house, allows you to afford other luxuries such as… Plane tickets

For anyone who lives in Bendigo, Castlemaine, Maryborough or Echuca though, this might be a huge benefit over driving to Tulla.

    Q300 turboprop

    No thanks.

    hour and 10 minutes

Technically and realistically impossible. False advertising.

    • Yeah looks like the news article has corrected it now to 1 hour 50 minutes

      • +8

Still pretty impressive to be able to travel back in time 40 years in 1 hour, 50 minutes!

As a resident of Bendigo, all these jokes are making me angry. I keep returning to this page, trying to think of comebacks, but nothing's coming to mind, it's driving me crazy. It's like I'm powerless here.

@garworsby: Just mention the property market

          • +4

@garworsby: Would mentioning Shepparton help alleviate some of your suffering? Plus, you have so much money sitting in the bank there.

          • @garworsby: Stay off the pipes and the brain will recover!

          • @garworsby: Don’t worry garworsby, let these city folk make their jokes while they’re all stuck in bumper-to-bumper traffic for hours on end while us Bendigonians are home in under 10 minutes!

          Hold my Delorean

        • It may seems counter-intuitive, but commercial planes generally travel slower now than they did 40 years ago.

      • Ha, have fixed.

  • Sick deal cuz

Would've been great when I was in uni. Bendigo pretty easy drive to tullamarine anyway though.

    • The issue is more the parking and getting there for early flights. My in-laws are out in Gippsland and overseas flights tend to leave early in morning so either got to leave in the middle of the night or stay in the airport hotel before. They usually do the latter.

  • +3

Wow, nice to see more airport options for Victoria, than just Tullamarine and Avalon.

    • +1

True that but Avalaon is about to Boom… Air Asia already going into Avalaon… Mr Fox is rubbing his hands with glee…It's only just the beginning

Gotta go to Bendigo to get me cube!!

Bendigo Art Gallery is pretty good.

  • This is great. Setting up an office in Bendigo in the new year. Will make trekking between my Melbourne. Bendigo & Sydney offices a lot easier. Any news on a regional Qantas Club opening too?

  • +2

Biggest surprise for me is that Bendigo has an airport. I remember visiting a client in Bendigo (yes, it does happen!) and didn't even think of flying in. Flew to Tullamarine and hired a car. More competition between airports (hello Avalon/Air Asia) is a great thing for customers.

    • They only recently spent some millions upgrading the airport facilities at Bendigo to enable this service. It wasn't suitable before.

I want to go to Bendigo so I can see where the bank originated from.

      ^poster boy for brand loyalty

    • It's the Bendigo Adelaide bank now. Come visit wine country too. It's about all we've got.

Doesn't seem that great a deal. e.g. it's the same price as the special price Sydney to Melbourne on Qantas right now - $129.

Certainly not bad, but there have been better prices on the Syd-Mel route, so it's just consistent with their regular discount pricing for that route. Not a fantastic bargain of its own.

    • +1

Plus add the transport cost and time to travel 140km from Bendigo to Tullamarine.

      • Yes, it's fine if you actually want to go to/from Bendigo, but not any better than the current deal to/from Melbourne; hence what I said that it's comparable to their standard specials and not a particularly great "bargain".

And that Syd-Mel for $129 hasn't even had a post about it as it's not that great.

  • Aw yes! I actually wanted to live in Bendigo for a bit :)
