  • The poor thing is that the 3XL model of 128gb they have is in black only.

    • They have the white model in-store

      • Not many stores actually have it in stock (at least in VIC). Definitely call ahead.

    • I ordered the black one from the US last week. Wish I ordered the white one after reading the reviews. :/

Do they mean to say 20:00 4/12/2018 to 23:59 4/12/2018?

    • No it runs until midnight Wednesday.

    • The email I got says:

Offer valid until 11:59PM ADST 05/12/18 unless otherwise specified.

      So, valid all tomorrow.

if you've got a price protection credit card these kind of deals are great as the bonus 200 dollar gift card doen't appear on the receipt - so when the phone goes on sale (which it will) you can effectively claim the price drop - meaning you kinda double dip on the discount.

    • And if you can salary sacrifice through work or your up for tax fraud you can claim the full invoiced amount

      • Or if you take it on holiday/business overseas and claim the GST back?

Except it is over the threshold. Damn Apple! They made it OK for a flagship phone to cost so much.

      • Yes these gift cards deals are great for expensing the phone thru my business. I'm just not sure if this phone is even worth the tax reduced amount. Heard plenty of bugs all over.

        • Apparently Google released a bunch of fixes yesterday, including a fix to the memory bug.

Still not worth it at this price.

One of the worst (if not the worst) "flagship" phone this year.

      Plagued with so many issues…

Honestly thought they’d reduced it to $200 and thought still not worth it 🤣

My wifes Pixel 2L is buggy galore + really laggy now…

puts me off getting her another pixel. (Camera is excellent though…)

@blehgg: Well my wife's and my Pixel 2 are still fast….

          • +2

@blehgg: I went to Pixel 2 xl after more than 7 years of owning Samsung and what a mistake it was. Pixel had so many bugs and started to lag like crazy sometimes requiring restart. Also pixels has the build quality of a Xiaomi redmi. Sold it and went back to Samsung with a note 9

            • +3

@InternetExplorer: I would never go back to Samsung again. Having owned three different Samsung Galaxy Note phones, all of which had almost no software support over their lifespan and were bloated and slow with a year, I jumped on the Google bandwagon to see what stock Android should actually be like. I initially got a Nexus 6P, it was a great phone though after a year it broke. That was my first experience of Google Australia's excellent customer support. They werent able to provide a replacement phone so within 3 days I received a full refund, I basically owned a phone for a full year for free. I used the refund to get the Pixel XL, and its been the best phone I ever had for the last 2 and a bit years. My partner who has been a Samsung fangirl for years, owning 4 of them herself, recently purchased a Pixel 2 XL, she also couldnt be happier. Two other friends asked for my recommendation, both got Pixel 2 XLs around a year ago, and rave about them all the time, mostly to gloat that they have Pixel 2s while I have a Pixel 1. Either way, not having to deal with the bloated mess that is Samsung TouchWiz has been amazing. I cant say why you experienced the issues you have, there are likely a lot of factors including what apps you installed but the out of the box experience of using Android the way it was meant to be designed without having Samsung fiddle with it has made my ownership experience a genuine joy.

              • +3

@FuRyZ: Software support? Samsung sends monthly security and kernel updates to Note and Galaxy S series. And Samsung has all the features already that Google is copying for next version of Android. For an example, AI adaptive backlighting only came to Pixels with Android 9.0. Galaxy S3 had it.

Regarding Google Australia support, I had an issue with the oleophobic coating wearing out prematurely and Google support said its normal until I escalated the issue for a supervisor. Then he arranged a replacement and I had to pack it up, print labels, sign documents, wait at home for toll courier pickup and wait 12 working days to get a replacement.

On the other hand, I had an issue with Note 5 display showing lines after I dropped my phone. Went to Samsung store, walked out in an hour with display replaced for free. I'll choose physical store support any day of the week.

                • +1

@InternetExplorer: Software support as in actually receiving major OS feature updates. I too receive monthly security patches, that is not what I am referring to. My Pixel XL shipped with Android 7, since then its incrementally updated to Android 9. All of those updates rolled out in a timely manner soon after release. I would be lucky if my old Note phones would receive one major OS update during their lifespan, most likely 6-12 months late. As soon as a new Note phone was released, you can pretty much forget any software support after that stage. Technically my Pixel XL is now EOL for feature updates, and yet even last month I still received a camera feature update that added the new Night Sight feature. I heard the Note 9 just last month finally started rolling out a beta update to Android 9 in November, good to hear they were only 4 months late this time. I wonder how many more months will it be before its actually out of beta, probably around the time Android 10 is released. And we are talking about their current flagship phone, tough luck for the Note 8 owners.

I cant speak for your RMA experience, but mine was great, I made the smart choice of booking the courier at my workplace, they picked up the phone from our receptionists.

            • @InternetExplorer: My pixel 2xl going fine.
Will wait until the pixel 3xk drops to below $1000 . There were some great deals in the US but for some reason they cancelled my order.

        • +3

My Pixel 2 XL is still holding up amazing. Still feels brand new - the idea of replacing it feels so foreign because I'm not sure what to replace it for?

Yes, a few people get a few teething issues (eg blue screen tint) but it doesn't bother me because I look at my phone dead on. In fact, I looked just now and the little blue tint I had was gone - shows how often it affects me lol.

Google Pixels are just such a clean software experience that no other android can match.

          • @pennypincher98: Yep the most basic android phones available. Great for those that don't do much. Just pray you don't need support!!

            • +1

@onlinepred: Sorry, what kind of support are you referring to? To be clear, Google Support is spectacularly easy. I've completed several RMAs myself and the process is just really straightforward. If you buy from the Google Store you can get a replacement device shipped out before you send your device back, and the reverse logistics process is easy. Also, not having a brick and mortar support presence allows you to complain about 'issues' that a usual support team would just shrug off, effectively allowing you to get a replacement device whenever you feel like it really… What's not to like about that?

              • +2

@pathacks: Having completed 6 RMA requests myself, 2 for my wife, and 4 for work, I can tell you that buying from Google Store does not mean you get a device shipped to you before you send your device back. Out of the 12 instances, only once was I shipped a device first, and that was after I complained so much they had no choice.

Also this shows that between you and me, we have done too many RMA's for pixel phones! Seems like that is something not to like.

Compare this to the IP6S work phone I took to the apple store as it was not charging, they gave me a IP7 within 5 mins and I walked out of the store. Only significantly better than what Google U.S can offer Australians.

              • @pathacks: The fact Pixel and Nexus owners routinely need to use the RMA process it’s unsurprising it’s good, the RMA guys are very use to sending out replacements. The amount of Youtubers that got review units with issues out the box or developed issues soon after was embarrassing.

Googles phones are notoriously poor in quality and have horrible software. Pretty poor from a Software company.

                • @WhiteEvo6: Honestly, I haven't had to genuinely RMA any Pixel phones in my two years of owning them, but granted I have heard my friends having issues.

What I do like about their warranty policy is their 'no questions asked' approach to replacement devices, and the ability to start an RMA without needing an original proof of purchase. It makes resale easier, and gives you peace of mind when buying devices on Gumtree (I got my P3XL for $910 from FB Marketplace). Before buying the device, all I needed to do was check the IMEI with google support, who can confirm for you the warranty status. It's great!

            • @onlinepred: Great for those that don't want the bloat that Samsung insists on.

              • @pennypincher98: Yep, have basic phone with basic features for premium price and no local support. Google is the winner here!

                • @onlinepred: Hmmmm.. it's hard to tell what kind of phone you have or want. Samsung is a nightmare for "support" if anything goes wrong.

The Google Pixels are like an Android iPhone (except better value). Logical, practical design. I've always wanted something like it. I just can't stand iOS. Tried it, but not for me.
Flexible, customisable, sweet Android that isn't lumped with 3 apps for each thing
For example Play Store/Galaxy Apps or Google Assistant/Bixby - it's clear which one is better. Oh that's funny it's Google's offering!

                  • @pennypincher98: I have p2xl, just sold p3xl. Use S9+ for work and have ip7+ for testing.

Pixels are like iPhones but less features. It's not as flexible as most other androids. Lucky you can use Google assistant on any phone these days. I use it on my iPhone too! Beauty is I have choice. Bixby is far better at phone controls whole Google assistant is better at web searches. Galaxy apps has a bunch of fantastic Samsung apps btw, perhaps as a super basic phone user you wouldn't know as you don't use them?

                    • @onlinepred:

perhaps as a super basic phone user you wouldn't know as you don't use them?

You keep coming back to this and I'm not sure why. If I was a super basic phone user I'd be happy with an iPhone? I enjoy the developer options in Android, the customisable UIs and the different shortcuts you can get it to do. There's none of that on an iPhone.

Maybe you are the super basic user? Although I wonder why you are bagging out the Pixels so much when you are using one yourself?

I would never pay this much for a phone though. $49/month on Telstra for 20GB + Pixel 2XL (got $10/mth discount) is great value.

                      • @pennypincher98: I'm a realist, Pixels out of the box are more basic that iPhone. That's it mate. I mean as far as android customisations go, Pixels are the least customisable. Samsung/sony etc have full theme support, even OP have far more UI customisations. Pixels are the most locked down androids, if you want to delve deeper you need root. Super basic man.

                        • @onlinepred: I'll give you a perfect example of Samsung trying to be "helpful" but just getting in the way.
My Gear S3 is great, but the notifications it stacks up are shocking. And you can ask them to be "minimised" but they aren't. What's worse is that it doesn't even update. It just stays there stuck as a notification.

I understand that they aren't for everyone but may I ask why you have a Pixel (and recently sold another) if you don't like them?
For me, they are exactly what I need. Obviously I can't speak collectively.

                          • @pennypincher98: I dev on phones and need the latest developments phone. At work we are now buying Nokia's for Dev phones due to the unreliability of pixels. P3xl was a downgrade for me as battery was worse, speakers were worse, memory management was far worse (p2xl is still bad compared to other pixels), as it was near new I made my money back.

Perhaps I am used to being a power user on android. I always had nexus phones but they were just to test the latest OS, while I had Samsung's/iPhone's to use the latest phone features and hardware.

                            • @onlinepred: I'll admit I've heard things about the 3XL that have made me wonder..

I got the Pixel 2XL a few months after launch - with a newer build date - maybe that's the reason I'm not receiving all this "unreliability".

Most unreliable phone I've ever had would have to be the HTC One M8 (on Vodafone). Sometimes messages wouldn't send, or I wouldn't hear replies. I had no idea it was happening for ages and wondered why some people were a bit short with me after that. Battery went dead at around 30% once, and then I plugged it in when I got home and 5 mins later it's on 19%. Then one day it gave up and stopped receiving any signal.

Suffice to say I changed both carrier and make afterwards.

                              • @pennypincher98: The 2xl I have has a April build date. It is the best one I've had, but still the power button on every one is of low range see saws a lot. Speakers work compared to the other two I had that just rattled. Even then I find data will just stop and I have to reboot. Apps constantly reload while I'm used to them just opening on S9+ and iPhone, found out this is not normal pixel behaviour. I am now experiencing the well known camera lag when I open it from lock screen. Looking at 4th RMA. Will sell after I get replacement.

                                • @onlinepred:

power button on every one is of low range see saws a lot.

What do you mean by this?

Apps constantly reload while I'm used to them just opening

I've got to be doing quite some heavy usage before apps/tabs etc reload. Only happened a handful of times.

camera lag when I open it from lock screen.

Ok, one thing I did have that I forgot about was the camera app crashing for a few days - a soft reboot took care of that though (why I didn't do it straight away is beyond me).
Tbh I don't use my lock screen much, either I use fingerprint sensor to go from sleep to home or I double tap power button to launch into camera. As awkward as it can be at times, it doesn't ever lag. It's always on my hot bar though when I swipe up so not a big issue for me.

                                  • @pennypincher98: Yea double tap power button is what I mean.

If you look and feel the power button, it can lean if you push the sides of the button.

                                    • @onlinepred: I've got a case on enclosing the power button so I've never had that issue.

Can't say I do the old double tap much so not sure if it's me lagging (and being awkward) or my phone haha

        • +3

Have used iphones, samsung and pixels and can say no competition - pixel wins hands down in every category

iphone - "lemme download itunes so that I can sync my music, oh wait the syncing deleted my old mp3's. let's try that again"
          samsung - bloatware heaven

      • Any other snapdragon phones are better value than Pixel 3 and XL with cheaper price

      • The issues were fixed with the latest December 'security' patch.

    • +3

Agree Pixel 3 or XL not worth the price. Performance beaten by oneplus 6t, the huge notch is ugly. Not enough RAM. Only saving grace is its camera and software updates including call screening.

That's not worth it with extra $500

Android pie + oxygen os beats Pixel with pie hands down

With Google camera ported by people its a no brainer. It won't be 100% Pixel like camera but it is good enough. Pixel just lack the hardware compare to other brands

      • Call screening only works in US :(

        • That's even worse then…

    • Yes have to agree, but I think it's because I own a Pixel XL. For anyone who's on an older phone it may not be too bad. If they want to encourage people with newer phones to upgrade they are going to have to drop the price further.

  • +2

My pixel v1 is approaching the end of its useful life, so I bought one of these. Thanks OP.

    • My pixel v1 is approaching the end of its useful life

Feeling the same. Deciding between 3 XL and Note 9.

      • I love the camera and clean interface of a pixel, but as has been stated, they do have issues. The recent December patch has fixed a bunch of issues, which may make it better. Personally I prefer more vanilla ROMs. Wait to see the verdict from the rececent patch for the pixel before buying it.

    • +3

What was wrong with your V1? Mines still going pretty strong.

      • I just upgraded from Nexus 5X to Pixel XL (V1).
The size had put me off for ages…but finally did it. Love it.
Battery compared to 5X is heaps better.
Was pissed at the ringtone going off when I adjust the volume (android 9.0 thing) but fixed that with the Audio Profile app.

      • Mines good except for storage space (32gb)

      • The battery life is terrible though, it's the one thing that made me want a P2XL. I got almost 3 times the battery life going from OG PXL to P2XL.

        • Yeah my battery life isn't great, but certainly not bad enough for me to buy a new phone.

The only real issue I have with it is the USB connector is really loose.

  • -2

Price in title seems misleading as they are RRP, when the actual deal is just bonus gift card.

    • +1

You'd rather the price wasn't listed? How would that work?

  • Should stack with 5% off wicked Wednesday?

    • +2

I haven't tried, but terms/conditions on the 5% Wicked Wednesday offer specifically mention 'Mobile Phones & Contracts' as being an exclusion.

      • Cheers

        • +6

Can confirm the 5% does work with the pixels

  • I was quite lucky with my one on black friday

same promotion, however the cashier was under the pump and she used the $200 gift card in the same transaction so got $200 off the price

    • This isn't the card you're looking for.
I can go about my business.
      Move along.

    • Could technically do this with every order by leaving it sealed in box and using their 30 day change of mind return policy to return the phone and rebuy it with the voucher :P

  • +7

What are the chances of a Pixel 3/3XL ~$60/month Telstra deal coming soon?

    • It's what I'm waiting for too but it's tempting urgh and my s8 is doing my head in

      • Wow massive lack of custom ROMs for the s8 what's up with that. Was going to suggest getting that "new phone feeling" with a new rom but yeah no…

      • Have you done factory reset? My old S8+ is still doing great. Looks more modern than the P3XL too.

People complain about the ram like the flagship iPhone doesn't have the same amount..

    • +3

      Android =/= iOS

      • -5

They do the same thing relax

    • Apple has ALWAYS managed to either keep up or even pull ahead in a lot of aspects vs Android. Batteries are much smaller, but they somehow make iPhones very efficient and they just sip energy. Same can be said for RAM.

With their A12 processor, they're miles ahead in single core performance. This is what you can achieve when you have a closed wall garden and have very tight control over the entire manufacturing process of the device.

      • +2

You know im not giving the iPhone shit right..you don't need to convince me lol Just the people that sook the a Samsung/other Android has more ram vs a pixel but the software is soo much better than other androids.

        • -2

The high price means people will always be comparing Google's flagships to devices like Samsung's S9 lineup, etc. When you spend 4 figures on a bloody phone, it had better be perfect in every single way and the Pixel 3 just isn't, and more imperfect than other devices in the same price range.

Google's selling pitch has always been software, but they could have made a much more competitive device if they just lowered their prices just a bit (maybe to around OnePlus territory, perhaps even lower, since OnePlus also has a "stock-like" software experience and with better hardware specs). The software argument is going to become even weaker once Samsung roll out their One UI update.

          • @non-core promise: As much I would choose the OnePlus we can't. It's forever grey import so I don't even compare the two

And unfortunately waiting who knows how long for better software isn't an option either sooo yeah I landed here lol

*edit I also agree the pixel is too expensive that's why I'm trying to get as cheap as possible

            • @jno: Given you have to send the pixels to Hong Kong for support, they are almost the same

              • @onlinepred: No, Google ship you a phone first, the you ship your broken device once you receive the replacement.

It's miles ahead of everyone else except apple.

                • @Jebus: Not in the 6 times I have completed an RMA. How many times have you done it? Samsung even swaps in store.

          • -4

@non-core promise: The S9 has 4gb of ram.

The one plus is slower than the pixel 3.
            https://www.anandtech.com/show/13474/the-google-pixel-3-revi…

The one plus also has a terrible camera and the pixels is so far beyond anything else available it's not funny.

We'd all love the pixel to be cheap but you've gotta be realistic.

"The software argument is going to become even weaker once Samsung roll out their One UI update."
I hope you're right but let's be honest, it'll be another rebranding of TouchWiz.

            • @Jebus: Gcam on one plus has give results were people can't tell the difference. Blind tests show most people don't like pixel photos when they don't know what phone took it.

    • -3

Not to mention the S9 also has 4gb Ram haha, the outrage is insane.

The pixel is also faster than the S9, s9+, note 9 and the incredibly optimised OP6.
      You also get:
The best camera by a country mile.
Monthly updates (speaking of which they completely fixed the ram management issue today)
      Free storage on Google photos
No crappy bloatware (this alone is worth the price imo)

After owning a nexus 4, switching to other brands then coming back to the pixel 3, there's no way I'll ever go back to an Android device not made by Google. It's sooo smoooooth.

Would very highly recommend for those on the fence.

      Speed comparison link:
      https://www.anandtech.com/show/13474/the-google-pixel-3-revi…

      • It's smoother, not faster. Also it had no software, it's the most basic android on the market. It can't even edit videos lol. Video quality is below one plus, call quality is below OnePlus, battery life is below most phones too. Just depends what you want. In this market I wouldn't touch them due to poor support requiring overseas mailing, also the amount of bugs you get from being in the Dev phone.

        • "It's smoother, not faster."

Did you click on the link? It's an extremely detailed comparison between many phones, not some YouTube comparison video of a guy opening and closing apps.

It's without a doubt faster, and just so happens to be much smoother ;)

"In this market I wouldn't touch them due to poor support requiring overseas mailing"

You do realise that Google ship you a replacement phone immediately, and THEN you send the broken phone right? The service is awesome.

"Gcam on one plus has give results were people can't tell the difference"

Haha, no chance. Firstly you need to install a hacked version of gcam with a crap tonne of bugs, and secondly you have no visual core chip.

The OP6 is a great phone but it's cheap for a reason. People that buy a pixel don't want to root their devices or install cracked software or deal with 0 after sale service.

          • @Jebus: I could only see a comparison against OnePlus 6, not 6t. These are benchmarks anyway, we have loads of videos showing how poorly pixel manages ram and is so much slower than nearly very phone.

Google don't ship you the phone first. I bought from Google store. They don't.

Hacked version with bugs? You haven't used it have you? Visual core chip? So you mean to say that og pixel must take terrible photos then with no visual core chip.

Op6 was a great phone, op6t is even better. I know they don't want to root or hack their phones because they cost do much!

I'm always confused about why ppl buy mobile's outright. Just get a plan and switch to the new one when the plan done.. or pay for insurance say mobile been stolen and get the new flagship mobile for free.

    • Because in 12 months time you'll have much better deals with more data or your current carrier ends up sucking so having the freedom to jump around is worth it.

As I said, Say your mobile got stolen or faulty, go with a newer phone with a different plan and renew the contract. Magic

        • +1

You do realise you have to pay to renew early right?

        • +3

Yeah some people have a thing against fraud

          • -7

@Alfonso: its not fraud when you pay for insurance…

        • By they logic you may as well steal a new phone, if you're being criminal anyway. Seriously.

    • +1

Because 1) that's insurance fraud and 2) if you do the math, with the carrier deals you always spend more over the course of the 24 month contracts that they lock you into.

    • I always do the math, and it always ends up being more expensive over the course of the contract than simply buying the phone outright and getting a sim only plan instead.
