Presumably to match JB-Hi-Fi offering the new Kindle for $179, Amazon has gotten on board and offered the same.

Usually $199, now $179 (-$20)

First time that I’ve seen this device discount here.

Initially read this as 'Amazon Kindle Paperweight..'

    • +1

      yep, a $179 paperweight.

      • Shit stays PUT.

    • That's pretty much what the Kindle I bought last time it was on sale has become.

      • +1

I read on my kindle while travelling to work and from work. My current rate is 1 book per week.

        • +3

          That’s pretty good. 52 books a year, 500 books a decade (5000 books a century lol I don’t know where I’m going with this)

@yoke2018: you're going to the afterlife. with your e-book reader.

            • @[Deactivated]: Better stock up on books, no Wifi or 4G there.

@Kontiki: just 56k dialup. the true definition of hell.

TGG also have it at $179, and I think if you wait until approx 10AM AEDT prices will be updated on their eBay store which you can use "PUDDING" and stack with 5% off gift cards.

    • That’s handy

    • it didnt happen

    • +1

Nice idea, hasn't dropped in price yet though. Myer might drop the price too - currently $179 on their website, but still $199 via eBay. Myer eBay link or those checking back:

    • -3

It was price jacked, went up to $199 on the ebay so $179.10 after the PUDDING

      • +1

It was already $199. My comment was that it will drop soon to $179.

Amazon AU seems to constantly just play catch up in terms of matching prices of other retailers, rather than actually leading the way with some unique discounts. Having to price match their own actual products against a competitor is a new low, I think its better buying from the retailers actually setting competitive prices rather the ones just matching.

An alternative story could be that Amazon were always going to drop the price to $179 for the holiday sales today, and as the wholesaler notified their retailers, and that JB Hifi just jumped the gun by having their catalogue printed and distributed before the actual sale started…

      • could well be right in this case. maybe amazon need to drop it to $159 to steal some thunder back from jbhifi :), because as it stands they have been upstaged this time round.

    • you might be right. but in this case I think Amazon is the one that did the discount. All retailers have the same $179.

There have been plenty of occasions where this has been the other way around: JB Hifi, Harvey Norman, EB Games etc. all matching Amazon's low prices.

Bottom line, we the consumers are the winners here. It is the same with Aldi: you don't have to shop there but their presence puts pressure on Colesworth to keep their prices low. Bonus with Aldi is they get plenty of praise from their local Aussie suppliers.

      • completely agree 100%, the more competition the better it is for us. im sure you are right in terms of plenty of occasions being the other way around, ive just personally noticed a spate of deals recently where it seems big w/jbhifi/target etc set a price, and then within a couple of hours amazon seems to match it. if they actually beat it, or set the lowest price first id be far more impressed.

being beaten to the punch by jbhifi on a kindle price just seems outright embarrassing though in my eyes, even though it is very likely jbhifi have jumped the gun on announcing this reduction before amazon got a chance as pointed out by the poster above.

        • Yeah I agree on the Kindle, if anyone should be able to offer a low price for that product it is Amazon.

you don't have to shop there but their presence puts pressure on Colesworth to keep their prices low.

Do you have any evidence of this rather than theories? Because the neoliberal economic theory is looking like a load of garbage when you look at reality.

Good Guys ebay has now dropped to $179. Thanks to Doweyy for the prediction. Apply PUDDING to get it for $161.10. Also go via Cashrewards for the usual ebay cashback.

  • I got this when it is $199. Is it possible to contact Amazon and ask them to give me a refund $20? I had a look but couldn't find how to :(

    • +1

When did you buy it? recently their return policy (even if opened) has been up to 29th Jan. They also pay for $17 worth of return postage.
      Otherwise just contact them

      • Thanks. I bought it quite recently. Contacting them seem to be the better option, but I couldn't really found how to.

  • How much difference is there using a Kindle reader compared to the Kindle app on a smartphone with same size screen?

    • +2

Significant enough that's it's worth having an e-reader.

    • +2

They’re fantastic for night reading too. Lightweight (good if you drop it on your face when falling asleep, like me haha) and the brightness can go super low.

If you’re a keen reader I’d be using this over the phone any day.

  • This is nice, thanks for the deal
