  • I nearly grabbed this last week, it just keeps creeping down.

    • +1

I doubt will get much cheaper than this.

Bugger, I bought it last week. Spoke to Amazon on chat, they wouldn't refund the difference but gave me a $30 voucher to use on my next order. I'm not complaining!

    • Also bought it last week at $84, might give this a go. Thanks for sharing!

    • They completely brushed me off, said that they couldn't honour a price match or price adjustment and that their prices constantly change.

    • I bought a record hours before it went on a lighting deal and they did the same.

    • +1

love amazon chat, tried your method and they gave me $50 voucher

    • They only offered me a $12 voucher

    • tried chat, got nothing :(

      • tried again, $10 credit

  • Can anyone recommend a good board game for 2 people?

    • +3

      casual: patchwork
      strategic: keyforge

    • +5

There are a lot of good options.

I play quite a bit with my wife, but I don't know how heavy you want games to be.

Top Recommendation, 7 wonder duel (most played by us), Whitehall mystery, patchwork we only played a few times.

Splendor is good too, codename Duet and battleline are good games as well.

If you want heavier ones, Twilight struggle is amazing but might be bit too heavy for most people.

There are also a lot of good 4 player games which can be scaled down well, like Pandemic and Castle of Burgundy.

Want to try Fog of love, but I am worried I will get into fight with her because of it. haha.

    • +1

Dice throne. 1v1 or 2v2 or 3v3 dice throwing battle game. Quick and easy to catch on, each character card has its own skills and required dice throw to activate. Each character has an ultimate ability to unleash as well.

My wife liked it even though she didn’t play much other board games

    • Nude Twister

    • Wife likes "lost cities", I came across the game by googling "games my wife would like", they were right.

    • We play Scythe

  • +1

This is an excellent board game. I wish I had of gotten the Kickstarter version! Highly recommend it.

    • There's a monster kickstarter set on eBay at the moment. Pick up only though!

      • Kingdom Death Monster? I have the whole set! Probably my favorite kickstarted purchase

        • Nah I mean a big Scythe Kickstarter set. Kingdom Death Monster I've heard is epic though.

  • +1

    Slightly off topic.
    Recently been purchasing board games.

Played Saboteur last night and found it nice and easy and quick.
What other games are quick to learn and can be played with multiple people?

    • +1

      Small world! and Machi Koro.

    • +6

Carcassonne is loved by everyone I've ever introduced it to, casuals and keen gamers alike.

      • Bought the big box last week for $85!
Sitting on the shelf at the moment!

    • +4

Ticket to Ride the next best choice.

      • Missed the Amazon bargain. Waiting for it again!

    • +2

Citadels is pretty good.. easy to learn for non gamers and kids as well. we recently purchased it (family of 4) like it a lot.

      • +2

I was gutted to miss out on that amazon $15 deal for the deluxe

        • +1

Wow $15.. I got it off prime for $30 with a code and was happy with that…

      • Thanks! Will add it to my personal price watch!

    • +4

Coup. I've introduced it to many casual groups, it's quick to explain and quick to play, very addictive after 2-3 rounds.

      • Coup's a great game, but I think its more of a "get it once you know what you like" type of game. I played it with a lot of people who have been turned off intensely by the bluffing aspect.

Great with a group of guys who fancy themselves as Texas Hold 'em players though…

        • I've had people go "oh it's a lying game :-(" just to be totally hooked in after a couple of rounds. Could be the type of people I hang with though!

    • +1

Splendor - Everyone we've introduced it to loves it.
Ticket to Ride - Great game for the family. Some call this a "gateway" game.
Azul - A little challenging but brilliant game. Won game of the year last year.
Codenames - One of the best party games. Never had a bad game with this.
Sequence - Another gateway game for the family. Scales well.

Once you get sucked in, there are tonnes of others that are a little more complicated but will get you hooked.

      • Thank you! Splendor is on the WTB list.
Ticket to ride I missed a few days ago.
Code names sealed on the shelf atm!

        Will add sequence.
        And read up on Azul.

    • Kingdomino or Queendomino, and definitely Sushi Go Party for quick to learn, scalable to many people.

      • Kingdomino sitting on the shelf waiting to be opened!
Sushi Go Party! Waiting to go pick it up for $29.95 when I can find it!

Have you played Organ Attack? Is that any good?

        • No I haven't but I shall look it up

    • Some others not mentioned:
      Quick:
6 Nimmt, Monopoly Deal, Bohnanza, Hanabi, Munchkin, Hero Realms, Fluxx, Love Letters
      Long:
Century Spice Road & Eastern Wonders, 7 Wonders, Settlers of Catan, Pandemic/Pandemic Legacy, Teen Titans Deck Builder

      Happy gaming :)

      • Thank you!
Just bought Catan and Pandemic Legacy Season 1.
Waiting for a moment to sit down and learn them!

        • Pandemic Legacy needs to be learned in a group. Would be good to get a few games of Pandemic first if you've never played it as that is the starting point.

          • @AncientWisdom: Yep, that ones a full night one. With a dedicated team.
My local store told me to skip the original Pandemic :/

    • +1

for large groups (5+), I have found 6 Nimmmt goes down really well, even with non-gamers (say 10 minutes per game). Sushi Go Party! is also good for this (say 20-30 mins per game?). Both 'fillers' but my 6 Nimmmt has been played so often now the cards are starting to break, people generally enjoy playing a few rounds.

The usual variety of social games (Secret Hitler, Coup, Saboteur, One Night Ultimate Werewolf, Resistance, Murder:Deception in Hong Kong …), but that depends on the group, some find these games make them anxious and how much you enjoy yourself often depends heavily on the group.

Citadels goes up to 8, but I personally find it a bit of a drag - too much pure down time while each person drafts their role, and then more down time while each person takes their turn. Depends on your group.
For something with strategy that plays up to 7 with amazingly little down time (but I wouldn't teach it to non-gamers, they've always found it confusing - too many types of card to consider and it's not obvious what to do to win) - 7 Wonders.
Alhambra plays up to 6 and typically in about an hour to an hour and a half. It has down time because you wait for everyone else to play for your turn, but turns are short. Easy to teach & learn.
If down to 5 or fewer people, Century: Spice Road is my #1 gateway game. Much faster than Small World and Ticket to Ride (also options to check out). Splendor scratches a similar itch but only goes up to 4.

My suggestion is to try play these games before you buy, maybe if you have friends with these games, or a board game cafe. Everyone has their own preference (eg I don't like TTR & small world but heaps of people do)

    • +1

A lot of good suggestions. If you can't play before you buy, I recommend video reviews to get a sense of the gameplay and if it's appealing to you (and you think the people you'll likely play with).

      On the suggestions by others:
      - I'd recommend Ticket to Ride Europe over the original. A few gameplay tweaks, but also full size cards without need for an expansion (1910 for the original).
      - Sushi Go Party is good, but also consider regular Sushi Go. It's a bit cheaper, and there's no board for tracking the score, but in some ways it's easier to pick up and play (without having to choose which cards you'll use), and it's much more compact (maybe 1/4 the size) if you want to throw it in a bag for a weekend away or something). Less variety in the cards though.
      - Splendor is great, one of my favourites. Nominally for 4 players, but I've played with 5. It just slows it a bit and needs a change of tactics given there are fewer gems available. There is an expansion for some different game modes, but I think the original is great by itself.

Another suggestion, sort of similar to Codenames, is Dixit. Great for non-gamers and can be really fun if you have some creativity (e.g. non-word clues).

      • Great. Thank you. Definitely some sure buys that every reply refers to.

Have you tried Organ attack before? Looks interesting and my partner said she wants it haha

      • Could I get verification of Ticket To Ride, the original is North America?
Went looking on eBay and there’s a couple of sellers for genuine for US edition? Sub $40 which is quite good.

  • We are addicted to this game!

  • Hi all,
Is this suitable for a 7 year old?
    Cheers

    • I was looking into this aspect as well and the blurb says 14+ but I have not played it so not sure…

    • I mean, It's maybe a little bit too complicated. But It's not inherently violent. Its often better to not fight at all.

    • +4

definitely too heavy for a 7 year old.

    • Good games for family/kids would be the Ticket to Ride series, and Catan (there is also a junior set). Helps children learn boardgame 'mechanics', before more complex games.

Here is a good list: https://www.reddit.com/r/boardgames/wiki/wsig/family

      • Yep Junior Catan is great.. nice little board.. nice pieces.. very little direct competition, very easy to learn.. perfect for 6-10 year olds.

      • +1

        I play with my kids:
        - 5 minute dungeon (absolute hit! Play without the timer)
        - patchwork
        - King Domino
        - Jaipur

        • +1 for KingDomino, almost mentioned it myself.

      • Thanks for the suggestions!

        • clank is also good for kids and adults a like.

    • +3

There's 'My Little Scythe', but I don't know much about it since I don't have kids:

      https://boardgamegeek.com/boardgame/226320/my-little-scythe

    • Kids love King of Tokyo/New York and Sushi Go Party helps them practise maths without realising it!

  • +1

    Guess I'm buying Scythe today?

  • Bought.
    Thanks mate :)

  • "I never used no hatchet that I remember. Mmm."

  • Thanks OP just picked one up. It is difficult to get my gaming group to play a big box, hopefully we will get some use out of this.

    • Since you commented you got one - check your order status - mine has just shown as cancelled?

*edit - Amazon customer service/chat is incredible!
My order was cancelled so I got on with their chat. The representative told me to buy it again (at $104) and they will refund the difference and give free priority shipping to be delivered tomorrow. Took them 2 minutes to arrange this. They've just earned a loyal customer!

      • +1

Glad it worked out for you. They must have shipped mine before they decided to cancel the orders. Got it delivered a couple of weeks ago.

      • +1

        Happy for you!

  • "$75.50 + $42.48 Delivery" . Ouch on the delivery cost; 1 months Prime for free delivery is a no brainer in this case. Amazon used to have quite cheap shipping, about $3 USD per pound.

Has anyone played the following board games, and would you recommend them: Dead of Winter, Gloomhaven, Betrayal At House on the Hill, Mansions of Madness? Moderm boards games are quite an expensive investment.

    • played Betrayal, you can play it a lot and each scenario will be different.

    • +1

I've played Dead of Winter. It's pretty good, but it seemed to take us longer than the suggested game time. Do you like co-op games? There is a secret individual aim as well (or you can play without), but in terms of mechanics it's co-op. That can be frustrating if you're the only one on top of things, as you have to do all of the game action. It's best with people who are at least casual board gamers. I think the crossroads cards are a decent element to introduce some dilemmas and fit well thematically. The components are good too. I think you can also buy The Long Night expansion as a stand-alone game- not sure of the differences.

I find for board games watching video reviews is really helpful and gives me a sense of what the gameplay is like and if it seems like something I'd enjoy.
