I waited for this to go on sale before giving up and paying 199 today for the 32 gb version as I needed it as a bday gift this week.

    • Where did you get the 32gb version for $199? That's a really good price

    • Hold onto your receipt. Buy it for $179 and use the old receipt to get $199 back for it.

      • +6

This is pretty dodgy to return the 8gb from this $179 deal to the $199 purchase for 32gb

        • +1

You're right, that is dodgy. I missed that bit.

          Carry on.

      • +1

Or if you have a credit card with price protection (like 28 Degrees if you've activated that insurance), that would be less hassle overall.

I did this with a GoPro recently and didn't need to get off my butt to get the price adjustment.

  • +2

Only semi-exception was the 2 hour Shopback 20% Amazon sale, where it would have come to $160. But it wasn't a discount on the product itself.

    • Yes missed that. At least the $199 Amazon 32gb sale earlier today was sweetend by 11% cash rewards.

      • -1

Don't blame you since it was at 1am haha! Almost picked up the regular kindle for $60, but decided I might hold out til this one comes on special. Love the waterproof element to it.

        • You never know when you want to read books on the bottom of the pool.

        • Hi where could I get the regular kindle for $60?

          • @Navigator: Hey mate, it was a two hour cashback sale on Amazon in the middle of the night that shopback were running, at the same time that it was on sale on Amazon.

Unfortunately I'm not sure if you'll luck out on getting it near that price anytime soon!

    • +2

I picked it up during the 20% cash back :) for some reason the estimated amount is only $36.18. Also got $20 cashback from Amex.

      • That’s the way to do it

      • +1

Price before gst is $180.91, 20% of that is $36.18, so cash back amount is correct.

        • Thanks Aoiro! I wasn’t too worried but nice to know the reason.

  • Going for $150 on Amazon UK at the moment, so it'll be interesting to see if that carries over.

  • +2

I reckon the AU store will discount these on Boxing day.

    • I was wondering that too - Amazon Australia might get on the Boxing Day sales in a similar way to the past weekend. To wait or buy now (or by the 24th, long JB sale)

    • Or even Xmas sale

  • +10

Finally I can read my books in the rain.

    • +9

Seriously though, can read books in the tub again.

      • i want one for the Spa.

  • +1

It was $170 from Myer Ebay with the 15% off ebay sale

  • -1

Ummmm what kind of Homebrew can you run with this when it’s jailbroken out of curiosity?

    • +1

What Homebrew would you want to run on one of these? I'm pretty sure these have custom hardware and firmware, what's the incentive to climb that mountain and write homebrew for this platform?

    • +2

there's not a lot, it's a e-ink device. It's mostly jsut a different book manager to make it a little neater, and custom fonts and screensavers. You can already use your own drm free, legitmately sourced ebooks with Calibre without having to jailbreak.

  • eh, I clicked the link and you can hardly read the tablet! what a jip.

seriously though - where did the 32gb $199 one come up?

  • Perks of kindle vs traditional tablet?

    • +3

      Better for your eyes.

      • +2

Far more of a tradition book feel. Less eyestrain due to glare. Far superior battery life - weeks vs hours

    • +1

      Way longer battery life, too.

    • +3

E-ink is pretty much identical to using a real book in terms of looks, so doesn't hurt your eyes. Also battery life is huge. I read on mine probably 2 hours a day and easily get 2-3 weeks per charge.

    • +2

      Less distractions and lighter.

    • +3

People take you for a reader when they see you with a Kindle. Think you're smahter for it.

      • +1

        I love looking smahter

      • +2

Also, people on the train can't see the kind of filth high-brow stuff you read.

  • Is it possible to price match with Amazon AU and take advantage of cashback?

    • It does seem curious that JB will be selling Amazon's own product cheaper than them, so maybe Amazon will drop their price when the sale starts?

    • Amazon have dropped their price.

      • +1

post it and get the sweet sweet and meaningless upvotes

        • +1

Nah couldn’t care less about that sort of thing. Someone has posted it now anyway. :).

  • Purchased the kindle paper white (2015) just before this came out with a good guys sales

My original kindle is still working perfectly.

I guess I’ll try & sell the paper white & hold out for a Boxing Day deal for this one. Water proof/ extra memory makes it worth it.

They should make it compatible with audible. Bluetooth to a headset or speaker.

    • +2

Give it to your mum for Xmas, 2015 paperwhitr is still great.

    • If you already have a Paperwhite I don't think it's worth the upgrade unless you plan to read while showering or something. I don't really see much advantage in being able to store 2000 books versus 1000 (or whatever the numbers are). Realistically you only need to store a book or two on it at a time (maybe a few more before a holiday) and have the rest on your computer

  • +1

Seriously? Are you guys always getting liquid on your kindle? Genuine question.

    • Some people are getting their Kindle in their water.

    • +3

Plenty of people like to read in the bath, by the pool, or at the beach.

      • +2

Fishing rod in one hand, kindle in the other.

Beer in one hand, kindle in the other.

        • +5

How many hands do you have?!

      • Ok fair enough. I always stay clear of water with my electronics.

        • +1

I used to, but waterproofing offers peace of mind. I wouldn't buy a phone without it now.

    • I use a sealable plastic pouch for reading in the pool, spa, bath, and just to protect the device in my sports back, back pack etc. I would even use a pouch if it was waterproof. Pouches only cost a few dollars from China, postage included.

      • Zip lock bags work for phones, touchscreen still works so it might be the same for kindles

  • How is it underneath the sun?

    • +2

That’s one of the main benefits over a tablet.

      They excel in the sun

      • Awesome. I'm just having a hard time justifying the price. I mean it just comes with the tablet itself and I doubt the ebooks are cheap aswell…

        • Plenty of free books around and they come up on OzB too. There's also a rudimentary web browser integrated in the Kindle software.

    • +1

This is what you take when you want to go an sit under a tree and read a book, or reading before you go to sleep, or on a plane or bus trip. There is less baggage than with a tablet and, as I mentioned, its much lighter and holds hundreds if not thousands of books (and audio books). The biggest thing for me is that you are a little further away from email, the Web, notifications.

      • +1

It’s nice that it’s seperate. A device just to read. With out all the distraction/ notification/ temptations of a tablet

  • Anyone know if the 2015 flip covers fit these perfectly?

Frame looks identical apart from recessed screen, but i couldnt find anything official on compatibility.

    • +1

Pretty sure you need a new case. The old ones wont work.

    • New gen is thinner and a little shorter.

    • The old cases don't fit.
I'm after the omoton case which but it's still not available for shipping to Australia.

  • Oooh time to start reading in the shower/bath haha

  • This looks great, waterproof is a really nice plus too for reading in the bath.

  • Does anyone know where you can still buy the older version paperwhite for a bit cheaper? Planning to give it as a gift, looking for cheaper and not needing the waterproofing..
I've googled around but it keeps pointing back to the new model :S

  • +1

    $174 at officeworks

    • $179 - the Google result that showed $174 no longer works.

  • +1

Any point to consider a Kobo instead or don't even bother? I am a bit out of the loop with e-readers nowadays.

    • +1

I went with a Kobo Clara HD as it was $150 at Myer over the weekend and after cashback $140. Reviews seem to favour it over the Paperwhite 3 and I didn't really need the waterproofing.

  • Its also $199 on myers ebay store. With 10% off sitewide it comes to $179.10. Good if you want to use discounted ebay gift cards

  • I use Scribd now after years of using a Kindle. Basically it's the Netflix of books, you can read millions of premium books for a small monthly fee.
Thing with Kindles is you can end up spending thousands of dollars very easily ($20 per Kindle book x 100 books = $2,000 USD) and statistically, most people don't ever finish reading their books, which is money down the drain and what makes Scribd stand out. You can read as many books as you want and not feel guilty about dropping it 2-3 chapters in. Amazon has something similar (Kindle Unlimited) but majority of the books on it are low quality, short books. Stacksocial currently has a Scribd deal… $95/year ($7.90.month) (https://stacksocial.com/sales/scribd-1-yr-subscription) or you can join them direct and read completely free for a month. They also give you access to all the latest magazines for free (Time, Fortune, NewsWeek, FastCompany, PCMagazine, MacWorld, PCWorld, MensHealth, etc)

    • I have about 100 books on my Kindle and have not paid for one. There are lots of free give-aways.

      • can you list 3-4 critically acclaimed books you got for free? do authors give them away directly or amazon run free giveaway deals?

        • Complete works of Mark Twaine
          Ditto Lewis Carol
          Art of War
          The Illiad
          The Raven
…about 50 'Open Learning' books on all sorts of subjects-very good.

Just type "free book' into the search bar at the top of the Kindle Cloud page

  • Fist Christmas present bought.
Thank you and a Merry Christmas to all.
