  • Where do we grow rice in Australia?

  • +7

With that price, I will just pay a dollar or two more for Thai Jasmine rice with much better quality
    Very bad deal

    • Or for those with Costco membership, go to Costco for better deal.

      • +1

        what are costco price$

  • +4

so now it's from Cambodia and we are paying more

    • Plot twist - our rice is being exported to Cambodia (more likely China) and marketed as a premium product.

I just bought one recently in Coles. It is not Jasmine, smells and taste nothing like it! Beware of these fake ones they advertise as Jasmine. Watchdog need to start getting involved! I never get Jasmine when I buy them.

  • I wonder if Cambodian Sunrice uses the small farmers, like Co-ops to produce the rice.
I remember riding past many piles of rice drying out on old sheets of whatever they could find on the roads of SE Asia with other traffic, the chooks and insects all competing over the same 2 x 5m footprint of rice.
After seeing that I always like to rinse my rice, i never really bothered before.

Thanks for the heads up re change from Australian rice to Cambodian.

Sunrise Jasmine has been my favourite rice. So disappointed about the change.

Will now have to look for another favourite rice.

This brand is SunRICE not SunRISE, very confusing

      • -1

        Really, “SunRice” is confusing?

  • Stick with Koala brand jasmine…Ozzie and great flavour.

    • Where can you get these?

      • +1

        It's listed on Woolworths website.

        • Ah ok.. thanks!

    • Seriously? Great flavour? Ahhhh you need to travel more my friend

      • Thanks for the tip!

        • Anytime bud

      • You are talking to Australians, where there is an ever increasing gap between the income levels, and not everyone is in the financial situation to do that.

    • Lol, Koala is owned by same company as SunRice.

I heard they switched to overseas because of the drought. If this is true, will they eventually go back to Aus grown?

    • +1

Having come from the country, it is nice to hear someone ask about the drought. Unfortunately weather does have a big impact on agricultural production, so Australian rice production is far less than normal.

IMHO SunRice is an Australian company and I'm sure would like to return to producing Jasmine in quantity again once conditions improve.

  • +2

Non Aussie product and more expensive! Lose lose situation! Boycotting Sunrice now definitely!

  • Try Falak Basmati Rice

  • Shame about Cambodia. A country Australia should not be dealing with considering the religious atrocities going on there.
Considering our own theocratic system of government, we are probably encouraging them with financial aid.
A sad history for that place, and they were doing so well initially. Oh well, religious extremism is going to continue as long as the West recognise and encourage the crap.

  • Just curious what country was the jasmine rice from ( before Cambodia)

    • The Sunrise Jasmine that Woolworths sold was previously made in Australia.

  • +2

It's unfortunately a result of water shortage in Australia.
Such a pity - Australian Jasmine was my favourite rice.
