If you want ultra wide I suggest you get one that is 3440x1440 much better imo

Just buy a much better video card to run it at the same frame rate.

      • What kind of machine would you need to run games at 60fps at 2560x1080. I can run most games around 60 on my 1920x1080 monitor ok, and considering this as an upgrade as current monitor is on the way out. I have a Dell 7577 with an i5 and 1060 max q.

        • I can run most games around 60 on my 1920x1080 monitor ok,

If you can run it at that should be fine for 2560x1080.

          I am also using 1060 3GB old i7.

    • That would be ideal but also quite a step up in cost.

    • I have one of these, a higher res screen will always look better but pretty good IMO.

Agreed everybody know 3440x1440 is better but more than double the price.

Are these good value for money? I don't really game on my computer, just youtube, movies, web browsing. Wanted a big ultra wide but don't want to spending too much for one. The only one I could see previously was a Kogan was which doesn't have good review.

This is a good price for this monitor, but if you don't game the feature-set (that you're paying for) isn't what you really need.

For media consumption, you should be looking for something with at least 1440p resolution (at that size), and you don't need the 5ms refresh rate, the 75Hz, or the Freesync features. Ideally you'd also get a VA panel if you can, because as I understand it (don't think I've ever had an IPS monitor for comparison) - IPS panels have backlight bleeding, while VA has better black levels and contrast in general - individual panels may differ.

Edit: For example, this Samsung one is "4k VA 60hz Freesync" according to phunky which is a far better proposition specs wise for movie-watching, the only downside being it's not an ultrawide (and the only extraneous feature being Freesync).

      • I'm looking for a monitor for my music production, you still recommend VA panels? I have no idea about monitors, but generally i'd have alot open on my screen from DAW, to MIXER, plus various VSTS. I'm looking for something wide, plus then have a 24" on the side for general use.

For music production, I feel like the specs of the monitor (other than size and resolution) will be mostly irrelevant (correct me if I'm wrong here).

I'd get the cheapest (and biggest that you can fit) screen with again ideally 1440p vertical resolution. If you want it to match the 24", a 30" ultrawide (21:9 aspect ratio) is what you'd want. The panel type, response times, colour reproduction, contrast, etc, wouldn't really matter (imo - again, I don't know what's involved in music production).

          • @HighAndDry: Basically editing, nothing insane.
I'll look for a 30" ultrawide, thank you. I can always find another 24: and have matching 24" on each side if I need the room.

            Thanks

If you want large screen space but there’s not really any motion you should definitely go for IPS as it has best viewing angles.
TN is worst colours but best response times.
VA is middle ground on all those three but plus has great backlight blocking; best contrast/true black.

    • I am using a similar one with height adjustable to replace 2 x 22", not bad for the money.

You have to expect not much difference to a FHD monitor and I found that if a bit curve is better for that size.

      • How's the pixel density/clarity? Because I worked out (because I'm pairing an 21:9 with a 16:9) that an ultrawide 30" is the same vertical size as a 24" monitor, and 24" is the biggest I'd want to go with a 1080p vertical resolution. 34" is closer to 27" (?) and you'd want at least 1440p for that (imo).

        • 21:9 34" is around the same as my Dell 24" 16:10

          • @superforever: Seems about right - a 16:10 would be a bit taller than a 16:9. If that's the vertical height, then an 1080p vertical res should actually be fine.

    • I’ve got the previous iteration of this monitor.

I went from 2x24” monitors for the convenience of one ultrawide. I found I didn’t lose too much screen real estate.

I use it for docs, web, YouTube etc. Nothing exciting just standard office/light entertainment stuff.

For my needs, I don’t find the “low” res anything to worry about. But I wouldn’t do serious photo/video work with it. So set you expectations accordingly.

I got mine for $350 secondhand. For that price new seems to be a very good price.

      Hope this helps.

  • Are extra wide good on most of games like BFV?

    • +1

Most games will have support for ultra-wide 21:9 aspect ratio, so yes

      • I play Rise of tomb raider on it, it is very good.

  • Would a system consisting of a Ryzen 5 2600, 16GB RAM and a RX580 8GB be enough to run 2560×1080 at a steady 60+ FPS?

    • +1

      Easily.

    • +1

30% more pixels than 1080, you won't get full fps in all games but for FPS I think it's a big improvement.

    • +1

Taken 580 supports Free Sync, you should be able to get it. If not, you might have to lower your settings to high or medium.
Lastly it depends on game as well

  • Is it possible to run a game at 1920x1080, and just have black bars on the sides if need be?

    • and just have black bars on the sides if need be?

Yes you can set it with monitor settings if you want black bars. I can connect my old Xbox 360 to it.

  • Not that good for gaming, because of the refresh rate. Resolution is kinda disappointing too.

    • I am using 1060 3GB fast sync with it, playing Rise of Tomb Raider it is so good with the extra wide.
